Personally, what makes this video effective, is its originality, eccentricity, vibrance and colour. The beauty in its entirety as well as the beauty of the subjects adds to the replay value and attractiveness. The weirdness of the imagery does too, especially the birth to silk. Here, FKA Twigs exhibits her euphoric and creative genius.
There are few things that are conventional about this video: the subject, FKA Twigs owns a proliferation of close-ups that add to her star image; the dance break as part of a dance hit; and bright lighting in the solo shots to display the focus, Twigs, as clearly and beautifully as possible.
FKA Twigs is presented as the mother of all these beings. However she is still a part of them, dancing along side all of them, but as she is lifted into the sky and sits upon the throne in the middle, we also feel her sense of stardom. FKA Twigs is the queen of the wild, the outcasts and the different ones. With her beautiful red dress and enchanting choreography, she bewitches the audience.
Although most of the video seems to be disjuncture, there is amplification of the lyrics through the self-expression of dancing, and the individuality through costume design. There is also exhibition of thought beats, especially during the slower cuts at the beginning of the song, which works to emphasise the beauty of the subjects and lyrics of that part of the song.
There is also a slight narrative here: FKA Twigs plays the role of the mother, who gives birth to a pride of young connected through the umbilical cord of colourful silk. They then cross paths again in the wild on a black platform runway, where each child performs their own routine as well as together. This narrative actually represents a larger picture that is meant to generalise the whole human race: we are born and when confronted with a platform to express ourselves, we are meant to express our individuality and differences as well as work together with others to achieve our goals; and create passionate art.
The mood and tone is quite mysterious yet fierce. As we divulge from the slow and eerie beginning, we delve into the bass-heavy body of the song, the characters start to shine through their dance. As both a dance hit and self-expression anthem, there is a sense of inspiration exuding from FKA Twigs, as well as bewilderment due to the creative and imaginative oddities in the video.
In the eccentric video, FKA Twigs uses color, costume and charisma to enchant us with hypnotic voguing and puzzling. With no two outfits the same, each character is presented independent, individual and inexplicably fierce.
This self-directed video exhibits an eclectic set of individuals, depicted as wild yet beautiful creatures, who express themselves through vogue. FKA twigs’ message here: be yourself, express yourself, be different, or better said through a lyric from the song: “I just want for you to love you.” Thus the biggest themes in the video are: self-expression and self-love.
Sub themes include drugs, sex and passion.
