Hi Glee Family,
So a lot of us went to bed last night furious over the news that George Zimmerman was acquitted. When we woke up, we discovered Cory Monteith who played Finn Hudson died at some point last night. So there are a lot of emotions going on right now (at least for me.)
You are allowed to be sad for Trayvon Martin AND sad for Cory Monteith. They are both real people who died too soon. Human beings are complex creatures who are capable of feeling multiple things at once. I’ve heard some people are getting guilt tripped for being sad about Cory in light of Zimmerman’s “not guilty" verdict. Avoid people who try to make you feel bad for having emotions. You’re allowed to have emotions.
It’s okay that this feels personal. Most of us didn’t know Cory, but we did see him every week on our tvs. We watched the behind the scenes videos. We saw the tour. We didn’t know him, but he felt familiar. We knew FINN and watched him grow and develop. It feels real because it IS real. You’re allowed to be sad. You’re allowed to feel like you lost someone because you did lose someone. Remain respectful of his family and friends who are mourning now, but YOU are allowed to feel sad too and it’s not silly and it’s not childish. Your emotions are valid and real and it’s okay to have them.
Take care of yourself. If you’ve been crying, drink water because it’s easy to get dehydrated. If you haven’t eaten something today, eat something even if you don’t feel like it. Listen to music. Watch tv. Hug someone. Go online and watch old videos. Or avoid the internet all together because it’s a little too raw right now and you’re getting overwhelmed. All of this is okay. All of this is good.
Make a safe space for yourself either in the real world or online. It’s okay to temporarily distance yourself from blogs that don’t currently make you happy. If friends are processing this information by reblogging lots of pictures of Cory and that’s just a little bit too much for you, it’s okay to take a step back. This doesn’t make you a bad person. Everyone deals with things in different ways. Do what you need to do to take care of yourself.
*hugs* Your feelings are real and you’re allowed to have them. Stay strong Glee family.
