as a general rule. if what we’re calling ‘cultural appropriation’ sounds like nazi ideology (i.e. ‘white people should only do white people things and black people should only do black people things’) with progressive language, we are performing a very very poor application of what ‘cultural appropriation’ means. this is troublingly popular in the blogosphere right now and i think we all need to be more critical of what it is we may be saying or implying, even unintentionally.

There is nothing wrong with everyone enjoying each other’s cultures so long as those cultures have been shared. 

Eating Chinese food, watching Bollywood movies, going to see Cambodian dancers, or learning to speak Korean so you can watch every K drama in existence is totally fine. The invitation to participate in those things came from within those cultures. The Mexican family that owns the place where I get fajitas wants me to eat fajitas. Their whole business model kind of depends on it, actually. 

If you see something from another culture you think you might want to participate in, but you don’t know if that would be disrespectful or appropriative, you can just…ask. Like. A Jewish friend explained what a mezuzah was to me, recently. (It’s the little scroll-thing near their front doors that they touch when they come into their house. It basically means “this is a Jewish household.”)

“Oh, cool,” I said. “Can I touch it? Or is it only for Jewish people?”

“You can touch it or you can not touch it,” she said. “I don’t care.”

“Cool, I’m gonna touch it, then.”

“Cool.”

It’s not hard.

You want to twerk, twerk. I’ve never heard a black person say they didn’t think anybody else should be allowed to twerk. Just that they want us to acknowledge that they invented that shit, not Miley fucking Cyrus.

It really boils down to three simple things:

Consent. Is the culture open to sharing this thing? (& don’t cheat by finding one person who consents while most of the culture disagrees.)

Context. If a culture is open to sharing a thing but it is a thing of great religious significance, take the time to learn what is a respectful way to treat the thing. Probably don’t use it as random decoration or sexualize it unless that’s what it’s for. 

Credit. Give credit and if possible, buy from the original creators so the money goes where the credit should be.

See this right here is part of what almost killed me last summer. I had other stuff going on mentally but seeing in my inbox over and over again negative things the monsters in my head were saying too just pushed. Pushed so far I was ready, made a plan, and waited for my family to leave the house so I could be alone to go through with my plan. These comparisons should invite a deeper consideration for what kinds of tributes and beneficiaries of genocide are hiding in plain sight. And stop playing a game of thinking Shoah is treated with kid gloves, instead of cynically used to promote propaganda of American exceptionalism and heroism that doesn't actually translate to justice for survivors and their descendants.

“Denazification” in Germany is such a disgusting and pernicious myth and it’s been so successfully disseminated. Nazis directly involved in the Shoah held top NATO and cabinet positions in postwar West Germany. A civil servant in the “office of jewish affairs” was Adenauer’s chief of staff for like a decade. The justice ministry after the war had a higher proportion of nazis than during the war. The West Germans and the Americans successfully bullshitted history and everyone gobbles up it up and asks for more. So fucking annoying

I’m addition to all of this, people seem to forget or not know that:

1) Most countries that were complicit in the Holocaust were never forced to confront their crimes or apologise, and in fact, many often deny their role in the Shoah altogether. Many of them will actively harass Jews who try to speak the truth and gaslight them.

2) Antisemitsm in Europe did not begin or end with the Holocaust. Europe is built on the murder and oppression of Jewish people, as is modern Christianity, and Europe is chock is full of statues memorialising our oppressors. Hell, they’re still putting them up now (look up Balint Homan, Nancy Astor, and Gyula Kornis for recent examples). There are also still judensaus (Christian imagery of Jews as pigs or suckling at the teet of a pig to shame and mock them), blood libel friezes, and other antisemitic sculptures up lots of places, including one that was still on Notre Dame before the recent fire. It’s everywhere!

3) There are multiple Eastern European cities where the pavements are made out of Jewish grave stones. Literally. They killed nearly all the Jews in those places, and then ransacked the Jewish cemeteries after WWII for building materials because there were no Jews around to object (cause y’know if you kill people they can’t tell you not to dishonour their dead relatives). So any Jews that have tried to reintegrate into those societies since then have to get places literally walking on the desecrated grave stones of dead Jews.

And then it basically cuts to him and her naked in bed? You know the one 😜 Oh boy! This is what I like to imagine happened in that in-between. This is from Elliot’s perspective because I love being inside his head. This picks up right after Elliot opens the door for Shayla to leave and it ends where we see Elliot in bed with Shayla when he gets the notification from his therapist’s instagram account.
