An interesting article about a creative way a fair trade group is raising awareness about the unfair working conditions where many brand name clothing items are made in third world countries. This is why Global Village Collection not only puts the name of the country our items are made in on the label, but also gives out informational cards with the items you purchase and talks with you personally about their origins. We want to share the stories behind our unique items and let you know how important your purchase is in supporting fair trade so the people making them can work safely, receive fair wages, and live better lives.

At the end of the month, one of our very own will travel with a team of women from across the United States deep into the beating heart of the Congo along the shores of Lake Kivu to run the equivalent of 7 marathons in 7 days. The trip will be one of celebration (and sore muscles) designed to support gender equality and women's empowerment initiatives while highlighting the re-emergence of the specialty coffee sector that is vital to the region’s continued growth. Please join us as we celebrate World Fair Trade day with a special event to benefit this project. We will show the documentary Connected by Coffee in our Community Room as a starting point to educate coffee drinkers AND invite the viewer to not only make conscious purchasing decisions, but to learn more, get involved, and take action. You can start by taking action here! Caitlen will give a presentation about her involvement as a runner, and you will have the opportunity to support the cause through an ongoing raffle with goods and gift cards from the Delaware community to help raise funds. Refreshments will be provided. More information about the run: The organization and runners are raising funds and awareness for these inspirational women, whose resilience and hope never fades, despite facing rampant gender inequality, rape, and devastating poverty. All funds secured by the runners and through other project fundraising will directly benefit the women of three Congolese communities: female coffee farmers of the Muungano Cooperative, widows of slain Virunga National Park rangers and sexual assault victims receiving care in Lemare. As fundraising successes continue, more project support will be identified that coincides with the overarching aims of the Run. One of the best known names within Fairtrade is Kuapa Kokoo. The 85,000 strong Ghanaian co-operative owns its own chocolate brand, Divine, and supplies cocoa for the hugely famous Cadbury’s Dairy Milk.
This year Kuapa Kokoo, which means ‘best farmer cocoa’, has just had its twentieth annual general meeting. There was much to celebrate. The farmer-owned organisation is now a big player within the Ghanaian industry and held in esteem on both sides of the world.
The attitudes surrounding the origins of Kuapa were rather different. “Many in the cocoa business laughed at the idea that farmers could have their own company,” says David McMahon.
