A life jacket, personal flotation device (PFD) or life vest as it is also sometimes known as, is an extremely important but sometimes overlooked piece of safety equipment whilst sailing.
Regulations may vary and some may choose not to wear one but can you really afford to not be informed and check what and which type you have onboard? Designs have improved over time and there are many available for different types of activities. You should be especially aware if you have small children on board or less able swimmers.

In general there are 3 main types of life jackets:
1. Inherently buoyant – Provides flotation without the need to inflate anything. The most popular type, most reliable, although can be bulky.
2. Inflatable – This type has a chamber that is filled with air. This will either be automatic or will require manually inflating. This type should not be used by anyone under 16 years of age. It is the most compact but requires inspection regularly and is not designed for non-swimmers.
3. Hybrid – Consists of buoyant foam material and an inflatable chamber. Not very common. Considered reliable but expensive and requires regular inspection.
When choosing a life jacket or PFD you should consider the following:
It should be approved for use in the country in which you will be enjoying a yacht charter and sailing.
Make sure it is approved for the type of activities you will be doing and conditions which you will be sailing in.
Check that it the appropriate size for your weight and dimensions. Always buy a child’s life jacket which is specially designed for their age and size. Never put an adult’s life jacket on a child.
It should feel comfortable and fit snuggly, whilst still allowing you to move. If it is too big it will ride up and not keep your head out of the water.
PFD Type 1
PFD or ‘Life Jacket’ is intended to keep an unconscious or conscious wearer face up in the water. Available in high visibility colours and with reflective parts. It can be used for off shore sailing and rough seas. It is the most reliable type.
PFD Type 2
PFD type 2 or ‘buoyancy vest’ is able to keep the body afloat but it is not always sufficient to turn all wearers face up in the water. It should be used when on fairly calm waters and for fishing, water-skiing and dinghies etc. They are usually the best choice for children when not too far from the shore.
PFD Type 3
A more lightweight ‘floatation aid’ this provides the same minimum floatation as type 2 but is more lightweight and comfortable. It will not turn an unconscious wearer face up in the water so it might not be suitable for children. Should be used in fairly calm water and when the wearer is not likely to be in the water for a long time. It is good for kayaking, canoeing and general boating.
Regulation and Upkeep of Lifejackets
Regular inspection and upkeep of your lifejackets is essential to ensure that are still in a suitable condition.
Check age of life jacket, how long it has been in the boat and its condition.
Check for any leaks, tears, mildew or lumpy parts.
Allow to dry completely before storing and keep in a cool, dry area.
Check the condition of the straps any hardware or lights, whistle etc.
Keep out of direct sunlight for extended periods of time

1. Vis
Up until the mid 1990s this island was an army base and off limits to visitors. Since then it has been opened up to the world and has seen a surge in popularity and tourism, perhaps it is no surprise as it boasts some of the most beautiful beaches, has delicious sea food restaurants and an irresistible laid-back charm!
2. Korcula
Korcula is a green haven, covered in olive groves and thick woods of aleppo pine, coastal pine, black pine and cypress amongst others. 3. Hvar

Did you know that the white stones from this island were used to build the White House in Washington? Come and visit its famous beach Zlatni Rat, a unique triangular shaped stretch of sand extending out into the blue waters of the Adriatic.
6. Pag
The island of Pag has recently attracted visitors due to its parties and nightlife, but it is also home to some beautiful examples of the local culture, such as the UNESCO protected lacework tradition on the island. You should equally try some of its cheese and excellent olive oil!
7. Rab
Picturesque, idyllic, the orange roofed buildings of the beautiful town of Rab must be seen to be believed. The four bell towers of the town are said to depict a ship with 4 masts. 8. Losinj
Escape the crowds on the stunning island of Losinj. It does not boast the same cultural prestige as Dubrovnik or Split but it has an inviting charm, and can offer you a taste of true Croatian village life. 9. Lefkada

How to complete an effective check-in and boat inventory
The day has finally arrived, you arrive at the base with your fellow passengers, and can’t wait to embark on your sailing holiday. However to enjoy a safe and stress free yacht charter it is essential that you complete an efficient check-in procedure, take an inventory of the boat and verify a few important aspects of both the interior and exterior, before leaving the marina. This is to ensure the safety of all those on board including the skipper and passengers, as well as to avoid damage to the boat.

At the Charter Base office
When you arrive at the charter company base you should carry out the following steps, and also ask the base manager any questions you may have, he will be more than happy to help!
Verify the contract which you have signed with the charter base, ensure that you are familiar and in agreement with all of the terms and conditions.
Confirm any options you may have requested, such as cleaning, laundry, outboard motor etc.
Give the base manager a list of all passengers and crew who will be aboard.
Leave your contact details and ask the charter base for their contact details also, check if they have an emergency contact number
On board the boat in the marina
You should now complete an inventory of the boat and check the condition of certain equipment on board.
Locate and check the contents of the tool box and safety equipment, including fire extinguishers. Do not forget to find and check the number of life jackets on board!
You should verify that you have each of the following obligatory items; binoculars, compass, navigation ruler, the boat’s documentation
Familiarise yourself with the boat’s battery, make sure it is in good condition and ensure you know how it works
Very important is the state of the motor – make sure there is no obvious drips or puddles of water and oil and check the level of cooling liquid and oil.
Check the gas and water levels, be aware of what supply you have on the boat. Also important is notifying the supply of batteries you have.
A bilge pump is obligatory and you should check it is functioning.
Find the dinghy and examine it for punctures. It is a good idea to blow it up and make sure it stays inflated.
Ask to be shown how the toilet works and make sure to pass on this information to all passengers and crew.
Check the electric, lights and appliances are working on the boat, and in particular the boat’s navigation lights.
Locate and familiarise yourself with the electric panel and make sure everything is working.
Take a quick count of the cutlery and cooking equipment on board the boat. Make sure you know how to safely operate the hob and other appliances on board.
Take a look at the black water tank and make sure it is at a suitable level.
Exterior of the boat
Walk around the deck and verify the general condition of the boat, especially the hull. Look out for any scratches and note these down in the inventory.
Examine the general state of the sails, look for any rips or tears.
Check the draught and the depth of the boat
Very important is to start the motor and make sure everything is running smoothly
Check the water and gas draining holes and also familiarise yourself with the refueling procedure.
Test the electric windlass and make sure it is in good working condition.
After carrying out this thorough check-in and examination of the boat, all that is left is to get everyone on board and prepare to set sail!

Often overlooked as a cruising destination, this group of countries in Northern Europe offer breathtaking natural landscapes and beautiful sailing routes. Adam from the GlobeSailor team enjoyed a trip in Norway and brought us back some fantastic photos and exciting stories.
"Scandinavia is definitely worth a visit in both summer and winter," says Adam, our Polish colleague. Judging by his photos this is obvious. But what are the main charms and attractions of Norway as a sailing region? Adam tells us all:
“With its vast coastline, a yacht charter in Norway offers a diverse, but also a challenging sailing experience For me this was exciting! Along the 3,000 km of coastline, you can really let off steam from Skagerrak and across the North Sea to Barent Sea. On the west coast there are incredibly beautiful fjords and an impressive ice landscape to explore.
As far as getting there is concerned, it is very simple and stress-free. Fly to Oslo or you can also take a ferry from the UK or mainland Europe if you wish. I naturally preferred the latter.
Due to the vast size of the country, there are also gorgeous green expanses and landscapes alongside the many glaciers! The weather on the west coast is pleasantly mild thanks to the Gulf Stream. As well as navigating, hikes in the Norwegian highlands and fishing are also wonderful ways to spend your time. There is something to do for every nature lover!
Nothing tastes better than a Scandinavian salmon you have just caught yourself…

2) Benefit from early booking discounts and deals
It is often said that the early bird catches the worm, and that can be true when it comes to booking your next sailing trip in advance. Many renters offer considerable discounts, up to 10 or 20% if you book a boat in advance, and so there is a veritable financial incentive to get organized and plan your trip in advance.
But be warned, if you think that waiting to the last minute can get you great discounts too, this is often not the case, and in the more popular destinations there may not even be a boat left to book! Or you may not get a discount because there is so much last minute demand! Not only can it be hard to get a discount, but you will have to choose between older boats which may not correspond with what you are looking for (wrong number of cabins, too small, skipper mandatory…)
3) Cheaper and easier to book flights
You have found your dream boat, everything is planned, but then you go to book your flights and you realise they are either extremely expensive or completely sold out! This is even more difficult due to the Saturday to Saturday format of most yacht charters in the high season in the Med. Also it is necessary to bear in mind that for more remote destinations there may be very few flights per week and these may get booked many months in advance, leaving you with no way to reach the island of your choice. To avoid this headache, benefit from an early yacht charter booking, leaving you plenty of flexibility and choice of flights, perhaps even find tickets in an airline advance sale, overall saving yourself the stress and extra financial cost of a last-minute panic. Everyone loves a good deal, and if you are lucky you can benefit from a great deal on both your charter and your flights by moving quickly!
4) Plenty of time to get advice and plan your itinerary
Now that the boat and flights are booked, you can begin to organise your holiday! Your base manager will have more time and be more flexible to advise you, help you plan your itinerary and organise the smaller details with you.
It is also important for you to prepare if you aren’t having a skipper: look at the maps, research the area and tourist spots, and plan a truly memorable holiday at your ease and in your own time. There really is nothing better than snorkeling and the privileged view it gives you, to explore the incredible underwater landscape.
Why try snorkeling?
Snorkeling normally consists of swimming along the surface of the water and breathing with the help of a snorkel. It is also possible to go underwater completely to see the seabed in even better detail, but of course you should keep in mind your swimming abilities.
Relaxing and fun, snorkeling is the perfect water sport as you need no experience or training except knowing how to swim! What’s more, snorkeling equipment is affordable and easy to get your hands on compared to other underwater water sports such as diving.
You can give snorkeling a go in almost all the temperate and warm oceans of the world. It is the perfect way to learn more about the underwater world and its many amazing landscapes and creatures.
What equipment do I need?
Snorkeling equipment is quite simple and basic. You will find some on most rental boats and cabin cruises, however if you want to really get into snorkeling you should think about getting your own gear. A simple mask with a large field of vision, preferably silicone, a snorkel with a valve to avoid water getting in, and finally a pair of flippers – and just like that you will be a real snorkeler!
Whether you choose to buy your own or borrow them, it is important to use a mask and a snorkel which are comfortable, and the mask should fit your face well. If you have troubles with your vision, it is possible to buy masks with corrective lenses so that you can enjoy this underwater experience too!
In order to protect yourself from the sun, we recommend that you wear a UV top (a rashguard). And if you are more sensitive or conscious about the sun, then you can wear a wetsuit or UV suit. To look after your gear you might want to buy a waterproof, drawstring bag. Lastly, make sure to be aware of signs and warnings on shore and pay attention to the buoys, to make sure you enjoy a safe and enjoyable snorkel and avoid any accidents.
Top Tips and Advice
- If you are not a great swimmer, then avoid going too far away from the boat and check often to see where you are.
- Just as with all sports hydration is important; make sure you drink water regularly.
- Choose the right location (calm, not too deep, clear waters) and go snorkeling on a warm and sunny day, swimming at comfortable pace for your fitness levels.
- You might consider getting a local guide who can tell you about all the different types of coral and species of fish.
- Learn how to use all of your equipment: know how to get rid of water which gets into your snorkel, fit your mask properly to ensure a tight fit and avoid water getting in.
- Don’t forget your suncream/sun protection!
- Do not touch or destroy the sea beds or coral reefs.

1. Rent a Sailboat: stay within budget!
If you like navigating under sails, tacking, steering under winds of 20 knots or hardening the sheet? Then a sailboat is perfect for you! For a keen sailor, renting a sailboat is the ideal choice, to enjoy the pleasure of sailing according to the winds and currents.
There is a huge variety of different sailboats to choose from, depending on their specifications and your sailing preferences. A performance sailboat is best for deep waters. A sailboat with a weaker draught is ideal for setting off from an island, or for mooring close to the shoreline. As for comfort and space, this will depend on the individual boat.
In terms of pricing, renting a sailboat is generally more affordable than a catamaran or a motor boat. Also, refueling and marina fees are also notably more reasonable. Budget around 300 euros per person for a week in high season.

Choose your catamaran according to your sailing experience. If you are a novice you will need a skipper for your charter. Also think carefully about the living spaces on board, to make sure you please the whole family! The trampoline at the front of the boat will provide hours of fun for your little ones!
Budget around 550 euros per person to charter a catamaran in high season. Some catamarans also have a convertible saloon which can accommodate a further one or two people. There is also the option of hiring a professional skipper or enjoying a cabin charter.

3. Rent a motor boat: enjoy an easy cruise
Renting a motor boat guarantees an easy cruise, in complete freedom, without the constraints of the winds and currents. Fast and comfortable, this boat will allow you to fly along the coastline and leave others in your wake.
There is a large choice of motor boats available, from semi-rigid for an afternoon of water skiing, to a motor catamaran perfect for a family cruise. However you must have a coastal skipper licence, if not you will have to employ a professional skipper.
For a week long motor boat rental in high season, budget around 600 euros per person. However also keep in mind the cost of refueling to avoid any nasty surprises later on!

4. Rent a gulet: a unique experience
Renting a gulet guarantees an unforgettable cruise ! Secure and comfortable, gulets are spacious wooden boats with one or two masts which combine the benefits of a sail and motor boat.
When choosing your perfect gulet, the amount of space, the facilities and comfort on board are the most important factors. Each gulet has from 4 to 8 cabins, and the most luxurious might have an ensuite or air conditioning. Ideal for groups of friends or large families.
In terms of price, renting a gulet will cost around 450 euros per person. It is important to note that crew is always included in the price of a gulet rental, and it is sometimes possible to rent a single cabin on board.

5. Rent a yacht : the ultimate luxury

There are yachts of all different sizes, and varying specifications. Testing the waters - trends and stats emerging from the 2016 boat rental market!
Leading yacht charter provider in Europe, the GlobeSailor, has recently released some key figures concerning the boat rental market, to inform industry professionals, boat builders and renters on the main trends of the past year.
NB: These figures are taken from bookings handled by GlobeSailor’s agent to illustrate market trends and cannot be held liable if used in any other context. These statistics are taken from a panel of 30,000 European customers who rented a boat in 2016 through one of GlobeSailor’s 800 rental partners, in over 150 destinations.
France, Croatia, Italy: The most popular destinations among sailors
Across all our clients, the Mediterranean coast remains the most sought after. France, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Spain compete for podium positions as the top destinations. France (including Corsica) takes the top spot with 24% of bookings, followed by Croatia (22%) which is steadily growing, then Italy with 16%. The former two destinations have undoubtedly benefited from the slump in bookings in Turkey (a drop of 70%) and also in Greece which only made up 10% of bookings this year compared to 13% in 2015. We hope that the social and political condition in these two countries will stabilize and allow their tourism industry to recover.
The Lagoon brand continues to dominates the market
Between sailing monohulls and catamarans, statistics show that boaters prefer sailing monohulls, which make up 66% of bookings compared to only 24% for sailing catamarans. This would lead you to think that the most popular boat type is a monohull, but in fact it is the Lagoon catamarans which are out in front. The most popular boat model in 2016 was the Lagoon 450 which alone accounted for 4% of bookings (double the figure seen in 2015). The Lagoon 450, 440 and 380 make up 7% of reservations. Even though the economic situation is still difficult, sailors won’t deny themselves comfort or safety (2 elements on which Lagoon pride themselves) and it is performance which becomes a secondary concern. It is noticeable that catamaran rental figures are strengthening year on year and despite the tough economic conditions in the travel industry sailors still want the most expensive and top end boats! Yacht Charter with skipper: a trend which is opening up the market
Due to chartered boats becoming more and more spacious, the number of rentals with a skipper has risen from 16% in 2015 to 20% in 2016! This makes it even more important that bases can offer qualified, competent and friendly skippers. 75% of clients who sailed with a skipper said that it was the high quality service of the skipper and how well he got on with the other sailors, which made their cruise so successful. The client base is therefore evolving towards more inexperienced sailors, who wish to discover a new way of travelling, whilst learning the basics of sailing.
Clients don’t necessarily demand the latest technology on board, but a boat which is clean, comfortable and well built.
On the rise – high end boats, and rental prices!
At closer look, it is clear that rental boats are becoming bigger and more and more spacious, however unlike the past few years during which prices fell, this year, for the same boat model you will pay more for a week’s charter! This increase in price is especially evident for boats over 40 feet. Here are a few examples to illustrate this trend:
This increase in price is a very good indication of an upturn in the market, of the growing attraction of sailing and nautical activities, and of the improved financial status of businesses who are gradually recovering their margins, enabling them to grow and innovate.
It already seemed clear; all we wanted to do was prove to ourselves one last time that we are capable of the best. Those who undertake this epic sailing challenge claim they are just ordinary men, but to us they are giants, legends. Onboard Kriter VIII, the GlobeSailor team took part in this nautical dance which accompanied 29 skippers during the start of the 8th edition of the Vendée Globe. An incredible 48 hours which marks the start of a 3 month long adventure.
The start of the Vendée: Extraordinary!
We were lucky enough to be at the start of the Vendée Globe: it was amazing! It’s hard to put into words how incredible the atmosphere was, and the tangible excitement and anticipation which could be felt all around Port Olonna. Onboard Kriter VIII, our team admired the majestic outlines of the IMOCA boats which bobbed about amidst the many other vessels and crowds of spectators who came in their thousands to cheer them on.
Watching each boat cross the start line at great speed, we tried to imagine how they must have felt and set off in their wake. In their position we would be have been very anxious, not possessing their resolve in the face of such a treacherous journey alone on the waves. But we too would still be excited at the prospect; it’s intense, exhilarating, technical, challenging, and as appealing as it is frightening! There is nothing quite like navigating alone on the ocean to make you feel truly alive!
LIVE from Port Olonna
We wanted to be at the heart of the action and experience the start of the Vendée Globe in the true spirit of the event, so we decided to rent a boat from Cap au Cap Location, one of our partners in La Rochelle. The Kriter VIII welcomed onboard 15 GlobeSailor team members, comprising 6 different nationalities, 11 men, 4 women, and a highly qualified skipper with plenty of stories and insights to share on the world of racing and its competitors. Thierry made our weekend even more enjoyable; he happily answered all our questions and he carefully guided us on this mythical stretch of water, while still allowing us the freedom to choose where we wanted to go! We controlled the Kriter VIII as a team and it was a real pleasure to share this experience together under such intense sailing conditions: on Saturday, on board a fast, legendary racing boat, in rocky waters and against 25 knots of wind, with 60 nautical miles between us and the Ile of Yeu, it really tested what we were made of! On Sunday morning, after an ideal cruise and with downwinds of 12 knots under genoa, we were on cloud nine, and experienced the sheer joy which a great sailing trip brings, only to then be treated to the incredible start of the Vendée! A huge thank you to Cap au Cap Location who enabled us to enjoy this incredible experience!

Equally as impressive as the sight of the 29 giant sails flying through the water, was the support of the public. Amongst all the suppport, the help of sponsors is vital; not only in terms of their financial aid, but in terms of the moral support they provide for the competitors. The employees of PRB have spent a lot of time with Vincent Riou and his boat during his preparations and they follow all his races very closely, sharing in both his high points and low points. The photo above shows their close connection with their competitor and highlights how through him they can all share in this incredible adventure. As a GlobeSailor team we dream of one day being able to raise the flag of our own competitor, he or she sporting our colours and allowing us to dream the impossible… watch this space! In a matter of days the legendary Vendée-Globe’s famous solo round-the-world race will begin! This regatta, without the possibility of docking or receiving any outside assistance, was created in 1989 by Philippe Jeantot and takes place every four years. The GlobeSailor team will be there!
The Vendée Globe starts and finishes in Les Sables-d’Olonne, and the sailors travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope, to Antarctica, then Leewin Cape, before finally setting off from Cape Horn to arrive back at Sables-d’Olonne. The regatta takes places at this time of year due to the weather conditions, and it lasts from November to February so that sailors can navigate the Southern Ocean during its summer season.

The GlobeSailor team visited the 2016 United States Sailboat Show that took place from the 6th - 10th October in Annapolis.
This prestigious in-water boat show has been attracting visitors and exhibitors from all around the world since 1970. We used this opportunity to get a better grasp of the American Charter market, and to meet our American partners and enjoy the American culture in the picturesque city of Annapolis, in the state of Maryland.
The boat show welcomes thousands of visitors and is mainly focused on sailing yachts VS the Powerboat Show that follows it. On our first day at the show, the VIP Preview Day, we managed to avoid the crowds and to talk with lots of American and Vacation Basin exhibitors and tour sailboats.
Among the many boats that made their debut at the 2016 United States Sailboat Show we think these are some of the most exciting for the yacht charter industry: Dufour 460 Grand Large, Oceanis Yacht 62 , Bavaria Nautitech Fly 46. In order to provide better info to our respected clients we took a tour of the Voyage 480 catamaran, the new Lagoon 42, Saba 50 and and a beautiful Ipanema 58.
Many workshops were organised, and a novelty this year inside the Vacation Basin, dedicated to chartering, travel, and vacations - was the Mediterranean Corner where we met with our top partners from Croatia, Greece, Turkey and Italy to best prepare for the 2017 charter season.

Formentera is the smallest island of the Balearics and is also the most undiscovered by tourists. It is situated to the south of Ibiza and together they form the Pityuses islands.
