Headcanon:

After James and Regulus got married, Regulus decided to take James' surname. Not because he hated his own (he did), but because of the looks on Effie and Monty's faces when he first brought up the fact that he might want to become a Potter in name too. Monty absolutely cried and Effie's smile was blinding.

[After it does become official, James fucking teases the shit out of him, because what do you mean you WILLINGLY made your initials (that you use for EVERYTHING) RAP? Regulus pretends it bothers him, but when James raps everytime he sees Regulus' initials somewhere, he can't hide his smile.]
