No one tagged me but I’ve finally written enough of this fic to share some of it!
I hope there are some people out there that will get as excited about this as I am! It basically appeared fully formed in my head - loosely inspired by the TV show From, but make it buddie (eventually) 🙂↕️
They haven't gone far when the surface of the road changes, becoming rougher, less maintained, and a barn comes into view, old but obviously still in use, as Eddie drives slowly round the bend. Another couple of buildings, dilapidated but cared for, a post office and further up the main street a diner, more houses. There are a few people out, walking in the dusty grass along the sides of the road and they turn to watch the process of the truck with sullen distrust.
'Weird,' says Chris, peering out his window, a car with all its tires flat, at angle to the road like it's been abandoned.
'Yeah.' Eddie agrees, 'weird.'
Eddie pulls up outside the post office as a man steps out into the street. He's older than Eddie by a couple decades, wearing a checked shirt, and even from here Eddie can see its soft with wear, mended more than once, frayed at the edges like the buildings. He carries himself with authority though, a neutral expression on his face, one that Eddie recognizes from his Captain. He has a gun on his belt but he doesn't wear it with the ease of some of the guys Eddie knew in the army. He's followed out of the low, squat building by another man, a few years younger, Asian, his jaw working over a piece of gum. This man's expression is brighter but he looks to the older man with deference, standing a pace behind him.
'Stay in the car,' says Eddie, firmly, putting the truck into park, 'lock the door.'
'Hi,' says Eddie, halfway through a wave he gives up on before it's finished, 'we're trying to get back to the highway. Can you give us directions?'
The man he assumes is in charge steps forward, 'sure. You got a kid with you?'
'Yeah, uh. Yeah, my son,' says Eddie, stepping to the left, blocking the view through the windows of the truck, 'those directions?’
'Right. Keep following that road, right on up that hill, and you'll see,' he points through and out of the town and there's an emotion Eddie can't place in the tone of his voice. Maybe he just wants them to leave and Eddie’s more than happy to oblige.
I’m not sure who’s working on anything rn so if you are and you see this 🫵 show me ☺️
