There’s this post I occassionally see going round that quotes an author who responds to people who say “I’d like to maybe write a novel one day” with something along the lines of “I’d like to maybe perform a brain surgery one day”.
I get that it’s supposed to like, be pointing out that the incredible skill of authors, and the work they put into honing their craft, is often being disrespected by people who casually assume they could just sit at a type writer and shit out a best seller on a rainy afternoon. But to me it fails as a response on two fronts.
Firstly, you have to do a brain surgery all at once. Secondly, you have to get it right the first time. Neither of those things is true with a novel. Or most skills! People can and do become masters of various crafts by just like, diving in at the deep end and like, fucking going for it and learning as they go.
It makes me think of this 60 year old woman who I read a puff-piece about who was planning to spend a year cycling from England to China, the reporter was like, super focused on how she hadn’t done any training for it and her response was always just “I’m sure I’ll learn along the way”
Any novelist with no back ground in journalism or an understanding of human interaction, which comes from life and not spelling bee is a FOOL.
That lack of real world, and apparently knowledge how to edit EDITING is missing a vital.part of why people read anyway.
I'm writing a book right now. I'll be working on it shortly. Today. I never honed anything as novelist. But you're obviously one of the greats. Standing on the backs of all the "little" writers.
So get back to your ivory tower. Your mom told me tell you your cape is washed there Hemingway.
Kim Jong-Un Thrown Into Labor Camp For Attempting To Cross Border Into South Korea
PYONGYANG—Following a swift capture, arrest, and trial before an official tribunal, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un was thrown into a remote labor camp for attempting to cross the border into South Korea, authorities from the totalitarian nation confirmed Friday. “Kim Jong-un is an enemy of the state and has been sentenced to 45 years of hard labor,” said a representative from the North Korean Ministry of People’s Security, adding that troops quickly apprehended the former dictator after he and several companions were spotted traveling across the line demarcating the demilitarized zone that divides the two nations in broad daylight. “As punishment for disobeying the government’s orders, Kim Jong-un will be forced to work 16 hours a day to repent for his treacherous actions against his nation. May they serve as an example to all North Koreans of the importance of loyalty to one’s country.” At press time, sources confirmed that the malnourished, tortured former leader had been executed in the camp for collapsing from exhaustion.

“My first tattoo said: “I Hate.” I tattooed over it a long time ago. I was twenty-one when I got it. It was a very self-destructive period of my life. I’d dropped out of college. My girlfriend had just left me for an older guy. I’d gotten a Mohawk and was doing a lot of slam dancing. I felt like everyone in the family was disappointed with me. My dad was a very successful attorney. My brother was a diplomat. So I rebelled against everything and decided that I was going to live the whole ‘poetry lifestyle.’ I lived in the desert for a couple years. Then I came to New York and tried to survive as a poet. I ended up working as a freak in the Coney Island Side Show. But after fifteen years, even that became like any other job. It was the exact same thing every day. Only the audience changed. I still haven’t figured out what I was trying to escape. There’s no such thing as a true outsider. We all have to breathe. We all have to eat. We all have to work. I wanted to run away from everything but I ran into myself. I’m still a middle class, intellectual kid from the suburbs.”
I want you to know that Crazy Eddie died so the world rum supply wouldn't dry up.

RPPC, Madame Suritha, The Tattooed Lady
My Google search didn’t turn up much on this lovely ornamented lady, save for a 1914 ad in a New Zealand newspaper broadcasting Madame Suritha’s world tour. The ad described her as “the most beautiful tattooed woman” and the ONLY one to be inked in eight colors!
