Kinda feels like lately every time I wake up there’s some new atrocity happening in our world and it can be very debilitating. I’ve received a lot of tweets and comments recently from people asking what’s the point because they feel as if no progress is ever made towards the betterment of our society. Now I know I don’t have any answers, but I do understand that frustration and my very humble opinion is simply that we must keep working towards change together, even when it feels as if nothing good is coming of it.

We must at least try to give those who come after us a better life and honor those who have been taken from us far too early.

Q: If you had to compare EXO to a movie genre, what would it be? What about your life?

A documentary. You can experience/see all the major emotions within the group. As for my life… I don’t know. I guess it’d be a documentary, too. All the emotions are there. Honestly, it’s pretty much the same for me or for EXO.

Q: Are there any lyrics you like in this album?

“Hello angel, you’re like a painting. You’re all I see when I look to the skies.” I think the melody and the lyrics really work together well. It’s almost like you’re really saying it (to someone), so I like it.

Q: What time and places do you like?

I like my room the most, and I like between 11 and 12 o’ clock. That’s my break time. And I can rest the best in my room. I don’t really like to go out much.

Q: Do you enjoy the new or the familiar more?

Familiar things. If you’re familiar with something you’ve done it before, so you can apply it in different ways however you’d like. You can also enjoy it more easily. I can’t really make myself try new/unfamiliar things. I think I can show what I have(/my best) better when I’m familiar with something.

Q: Give us one thing that you like because it’s been around for a while, and another you like because it’s new.

I’d pick the members for something that’s been around for a while. We can see each others’ limits just by looking at each others’ eyes. Then for the new, I would pick our new choreography and songs. It’s a lot of fun learning new dances, and great to sing new songs. I like when we’re preparing for a new album.

Q: Is there anything that brings back old memories for you?

Other singers. Buzz, SG Wannabe, V.O.S, Monday Kids. When I listen to senior artists’ songs it makes me think of the past.

Q: Which do you like most, the past, present, or future?

The future. I live while planing out(/drawing) my future. You have to have an idea about your future to plan what you should do in the present. If you decide you want to be doing something at a certain age, that’s how it’ll turn out. Life doesn’t always go according to plan, but you can do your best to make it do so. I hope that I’ll reach all of the goals I’ve set (for myself).

Q: Have you had any experiences that broadened your view on the world?

I still don’t have a broad view on the world. If anything, my view has gotten more narrow since debut. It’s no that easy for me to get out and go around, so I don’t think I know much about the world. I know about my job, but I don’t know anything other than being a singer, a celebrity. When we see our foreign fans, it broadens my view on the world in that I realize that so many people with different appearances, speaking different languages, will come to see us.

Q: Among the things that can be seen, what do think is most valuable?

My family, the members. Also the fans who love and support EXO and me, and everyone around me.

Q: What do you think is the most amazing thing created by humanity?

The telephone. You can let people know what’s going on immediately even from a distance. If the phone hadn’t been invented, we wouldn’t have had the internet, either. People used to use telephone modems (dial-up) to use the internet. If we didn’t have cell phones, these devices that can send and receive messages through electromagnetic waves, I don’t think we would have the internet, either. I don’t think human civilization would have come so far without it.

Q: Is there anything that others’ don’t think much of that you find important?

Sense. If you have sense, you can be quick-witted, and I think that makes life a bit easier.

Q: Have you ever felt like your life is perfect?

I haven’t. I always feel like something is lacking. And wonder whether I can really do well. I’ve never planned out my day and just followed it. I live on impulse, so I’m the type to just do what I want when I want to do it. That’s why I’ve never thought my life is perfect.

Q: What’s a moment you want to experience in your life?

I want to be taller. 186cm. I think it’s best for guys to be tall, and I think that’s the best height for it. 186cm tall, with good proportions. (laughs) If I get taller, I want to be able to reach things that are high up. And I want to look more reliable. When you get taller, your hands and feet grow too, right? I want to see that. How big my feet would(/could) get.

Q: If you had a twin or a doppelganger, what kind of person would you like them to be?

I want them to be just like me. I want to watch them. You can only see yourself in the mirror, right? I’m really curious. I want to watch them all day long. I think by doing that I could reflect on myself and find what I need to fix.

Q: Is there anything you’re always curious about?

The human voice. I’ve always been curious about (different kinds of) vocalization. I think it’s really interesting. I actually felt like my vocalization is really bad today. I want to research more about it, but I don’t think it’s the sort of thing that gets better by just researching. It takes time and effort, so I’m really curious about it.

Q: What is the most worth waiting for?

Right now? A break. I’m waiting for a break, and waiting for our new album to be released. I’m looking forward to the fans’ and the public’s reactions when it first comes out. I’m looking forward to it, and I hope they say it’s something new(/fresh). I’m also looking forward to whether we’ll do even better than before.

Q: When does the day feel too short?

When I’m just hanging around. When I hang around with friends, and when I’m with the fans. My birthday, and fan meetings, and concerts are all like hanging around (playing with) the fans.

Q: When do you think the sky is most beautiful?

In the summer, between 7 and 8 PM. And in the winter, around 5 to 6 PM. When the sun is setting. I like how it feels like the sun and the moon are meeting. It also sort of looks like they’re fighting for space. Even if the sky above is getting dark, it’s still bright where the sun is setting. I really like all the colors. It makes me sort of relax and feel relieved.

Q: Have you ever realized you’re a bigger part of someone’s life than you had thought? What about the opposite?

The fans and the public who keeps an eye on us. I wouldn’t be here without them. I think it’d be them for the opposite, too.

Q: What is the earliest memory you have? I think it’s of holding a bottle. (laughs) We were at my mom’s friend’s house. I think they had a baby, too. I think I was maybe around 4 years old (2~3 international)? My mom’s friend was doing the dishes, and I remember holding an empty bottle. It was around sunset. Their entryway was right by their living room, and they had three rooms. I think I remember the house being sort of brown.

Q: Do you ever feel like you’re an adult? An adult? I can’t believe I’m already 25… Ah, (I feel that way) when I’m filial to my parents.

Q: Do you think you’re a consistent person? I’m not a consistent person. I act differently depending on how I feel. I’m go on impulse. (laughs) Really consistent people, like D.O., are really interesting to me.

Q: Do you think people change because of something within themselves, or because of outside forces?  Outside forces play the bigger part. If people tell you that you’re doing well, you feel like you’re doing well, and if they tell you you’re really bad you start thinking you’re doing bad. I honestly don’t think your own thoughts really play that big of a part. People aren’t able to judge themselves objectively, so they judge themselves more liberally than a stranger would. That’s why I think people can’t change simply based on something within themselves.

Q: What part of your nature won’t change no matter what environment you’re in? Being mischievous. My bright personality.

Q: When do you think you’re the most “yourself”? When I’m joking around with the other members in our waiting room. But I don’t like, change or act differently in front of different people. I’m the same as I am on stage. I think there’s only really a small change between me on and off stage.

Q: Do you feel burdened by others’ expectations (of you)? When do you feel like you’ve escaped that burden? Of course I do, always. What if I can’t sing well? What if I can’t dance well? Ever since I became a celebrity that’s been my biggest worry. I practice, and exercise, to relieve that burden some. I take care of myself. When I do that some of the burden seems to go away, working things out one by one.

Q: What are you most afraid of? I’m afraid of dying. Dying without being able to live much, because of a serious illness. I want to live long and healthily. Peacefully. Because I’m a pacifist. 

Q: Do you believe in chance? Or in fate? I believe in fate. People say that all things happen for a reason. I believe that. I think everything is fate. Being casted by the company (SM) was. And becoming part of EXO seems like it was fate, too.

Q: Do you like things to be clear, or vague? I like things to be clear. I like knowing exact details when we talk about our schedules, too. It’s better to say yes if it’s a yes, and no if it’s a no. It’s boring if you just say you don’t know. You like what you like, and you don’t like what you don’t. I think people say they don’t really know when it’s inconvenient for them (to answer).

Q: Among the things that can’t be seen, what do you think is most valuable? Connections between people. You can’t see it, but it’s really amazing. Even if you meet people one by one, you won’t like them all the same. It’s really interesting how people just tend to like some people more than others.

Q: If one thing in the world could be forever, what would you want it to be? If something could be forever, I’d pick EXO. I want the name “EXO” to be around forever. Like Michael Jackson, who is a role model to so many musicians, and remembered and missed by so many people. Remaining in people’s memories would be like proof of us leaving an important mark in our field.

If you compared EXO to a movie, what type/genre would it be? What type does your life belong to?

I feel EXO is a rom-com. There are many moments of twists and turns, and also a lot of certain occurrences, but the conclusion is always happy. I feel my life is also a rom-com. (I) usually like to view things positively, and the life and music I pursue are all rom-coms.

Do you have lyrics you like?

I like them all!

What is your favourite moment of time and place?

I especially like the time before dawn. From 2AM to 6/7AM, I like this time of day. Quiet, silent, although there is a feeling of loneliness I just like the feeling you can only experience before dawn. When working with other people, (we) would normally begin working from 8/9PM to 12/1AM, when composing on my own I would work from 2AM to 6-8AM. There is more efficiency when working between these hours, arranging or penning lyrics, listening to music, playing with the phone lying on the sofa, watching tv etc. during this time, (I) really like this kind of casual feeling. The place I like would be my studio, so long as it’s a quiet place with no one else, I would like it. I previously preferred a lively atmosphere with many people, but now I like quietness.

Familiarity and unfamiliarity, which do you like more?

I like familiarity. I am a risk-taker, and recently there more instances of challenges, but I still prefer a familiar environment with familiar people, living a happy life.

Some things are better over time, some are better new, please explain.

Although I’m not really that old, I can find a lot of interesting, happy moments when looking back into my life, I feel that it’s really great. I fulfill my life. The merit of new things is the ability to meet more new people, to enjoy completely new things with people you’re meeting for the first time.

Has there been something you’re always curious about?

Music -smiles-, if not music then people? I like to meet people, although (I’m) not one that can be intimate easily, I feel that by meeting new people there will be mutual help, (and) happiness.

Is there anything you value that other people don’t seem to place importance to?

Being attentive/caring to minuscule things. Everyone values attentiveness to major things, (but) I’m talking about care and attention to little things. The type of care that wouldn’t be noticed by the other person. For example, passing napkins to the one beside you when eating? Something like this. I feel very satisfied by these. There was once, when arriving to my studio after wrapping up work, I found a grocery bag on my doorstep. There were six 2-litre bottles of water, vegetables, cherry tomatoes etc. and green onions and sesame leaves in it as well. What is this? After checking (I) found that it was delivered to the wrong place, it was supposed to be delivered to building next door. I just felt the things would go bad if left here. And so, I took those things to the next building, I felt very satisfied then (for doing so). I feel this is the kind of person I am, who feels satisfied over doing these things. Even though they won’t know, I would think ‘I provided them the convenience’.

When did you feel that you have become an adult?

When listening to other’s thoughts/feelings and discussing them. I am a great listener, and also like talkative people. When chatting or discussing, I would talk about ideas I’ve never thought about. Especially when hearing about other people’s feelings, assisting through discussion. During then, I would talk to the other person of more good things. After listening to my words some people would thank me sincerely, (and when) hearing this my heart becomes really satisfied.

(If you could) share your personality/a trait with someone, what would you like to share?

(My) positive attitude! Many people have told me that I’m a positive person, and personally I usually don’t feel too much pressure. I really dislike when people around me face difficult or tough circumstances. So I would share a lot (tn: of his positive attitude) with them, speak and chat with them. But there are also people who need to experience difficulties, and I understand that.

If you had a twin or clone/doppelgänger, what kind of person do you hope for him to be?

I (would) hope he is exactly like me. Through him, I would like to understand how others feel when looking at me.

Of tangible objects what is the most valuable?

Seriously (this) question in too difficult. I want to answer ‘love’. Tangible love, a love that can be seen and felt first-hand!

Any thing (you) want to remove from this world?

None. I am someone who believes every thing in the world is formed out of necessity. Really. (I) really think flies, mosquitoes, dust and other things also have a reason for existence.

What is something that’s rewarding to wait for?

I’m someone who doesn’t have patience, so it’s difficult (for me). And so (I would) follow this process. This is something I’ve been doing since I was young, for example I’ve agreed with my friends that we’d go on vacation in two months. Since I hate (simply) waiting for the two months to pass, I would do lots of activities within those two months. for example, buying things I like online and then waiting for it to be express delivered. Or going to outings with other people etc. Of course, all these (activities) won’t be as interesting as vacationing, but (would) still go out with friends, have a meal, and do it again with other friends next week etc. Going through each week like this, the most anticipated vacation time will arrive.

Are there moments in your daily life that you feel is perfect?

Quite a few recently. Living through a day, without making anything happen on purpose, passing time naturally according to things I want to do. I really especially like reflecting on the day alone quietly at 2AM, meeting friends over coffee after waking up, take a walk, eat, meet another friend, work alone at the studio etc. All of these are things that make me happy.

If there was the possibility to realise a dream in (your) life, what do you hope for it to be?

I am someone who easily feels happiness (even) through small things, unless I was busy, but lately I am very happy. My lifestyle lately is similar to my ideal lifestyle, (and) that’s how I’ve been living lately.

If you could time travel?

If it was possible, I want to travel to a very distant future or past. I am currently 25y/o (tn: Korean age), I would often say to people around me that this is the happiest time period in my life, that I am currently very happy. Living up till now, (there) isn’t a past I particularly wanted to return to. So if I could time travel, I want to travel to a time in the future or past where I don’t exist. A thing that I especially want to see, would be dinosaurs. -haha- Really, (I) want to have a look at the year 2800, 2900, (I) want to see how the world has changed.

When do you feel that time in a day passes by quickly?

(I) feel time passes by quickly when there’s no schedules. But the day becomes too long when there are schedules. When an entire day is packed with schedules, it would feel the time passed by really quickly, but after returning home (I) would feel ‘ah! This day was too long’.

At which time period do you feel that the sky is most beautiful?

I like when you see the sunset glow. A blue sky island that becomes orange in the sunset glow, in that instant where before it turns into orange (completely), when it’s still in that enigmatic ‘not purple but not orange’ phase - I especially like the sky at that moment. Secondly it’s when you see the sky filled with stars. I’ve liked stars since I was young. My dream when I was little was to become an astronomer, archaeologist. Because I liked stars when I was young I participated in a lot of astronomy-related camping activities, (and) the various stars I saw back then sparkly in the sky, it’s still an unforgettable scene.

What do you think is the greatest invention of mankind?

I think it’s music. I really like (it), and it’s also a career I am proud and passionate about. I would often desire something new, as my personality makes it hard to focus on one thing, but it’s not the case with music - continuing on for 12-13 years; continuing on for so long, indicates that I really like it.

Do you have any life objectives?

Definitely music. I hope to continue (doing music) until before I die. My dream is to have music activities with my partner after we’re married. Life = music, music is my life, I reckon by then I would be able to make a greater variety of music genres.

In a society where privacy didn’t exist, it was hard to develop certain feelings when they were banned or extinct. Curiosity was one of them. Why would someone be curious when they had access to ‘everything’? If you wanted to know how the universe was created the only thing you had to do was to go to the public library and look for it, they probably even had a hologram of the event. But how would someone explain they had some curiosity about a certain boy? Its purpose definitely wasn’t something academic. So what could be the point if the age for intimacy wasn’t until someone turned twenty five and its sole purpose was reproduction? Balie was definitely not twenty five; she still had five years ahead of her ‘to discover the mysteries of life’. So how would she approach the new kids when it would look suspicious?

Before going in the classroom, Balie stood in front of the door, peeping in, trying to see if there was someone who weren’t the new boys inside. She wanted to take this opportunity to question them about a little, but something stopped her before she completely opened the door, they were having a conversation and it looked serious. It was the first time she saw them talk about something that wasn’t the unsolved mathematics’ theorems. “Shouldn’t we start doing something Sehun? I can’t take another day of these stupid lessons. No wonder why this world is dying” The short boy, apparently named Kyungsoo, said. “And what could we possibly do? Our brothers are working hard and we are here to cover for them. If we mess up, all the sacrifices we made would be in vain” “I don’t get it, why saving them when the only thing they can do it destroy what they create?” Jongin whispered as he scanned the classroom, trying to find something that would keep him entertained for the next four hours. “Because they are like us, we got our second chance too, remember?” “Right, we did but we weren’t brain washed, we still had some sanity in our heads. We should just leave; they wouldn’t even find that suspicious. I don’t think we would find the exceptions our elders talked about.” At the beginning Balie didn’t like the tanned boy, he seemed a little bit arrogant but as the weeks passed she discovered he was really smart and apparently kind. Maybe it was just an act, but she liked the way he thought, it was exactly what she thought at night before going to bed. Why saving us if we are just robots? “Shut up, someone is peeping behind the door” Kyungsoo’s voice became harsher and scarier. “Impossible, normally they would just open the door” Sehun said as he opened the door before Balie had the time to hide. His dark eyes looked at her firmly, grabbing her wrist and dragging her inside. “Tell me, little one, what did you hear?” He was scary, Balie never felt so much fear in her life before that moment; even though she lived in fear, fearing she and Arabella would be caught by the government and banished, sent to where the outcasts lived; that dark place where no one would dare to visit or even mention. “I-I… you were talking about… girls” –Heavens, I’m such a bad liar- For her surprise, Sehun smiled wide, pushing her against the door. He was close enough for her to smell that strange scent of him. Did he use some kind of wooden substance with some unknown reasons? It wasn’t that strong so she could barely perceive it, but it made her dizzy, she had never smelt something like that before. “Now, now, now. We have a liar here; someone would be in so many troubles if I were to mention it” Her heart stopped for a second before she could look back into his eyes and gain something they called ‘courage’. “I wouldn’t be the only one lying.
