Alastor and his Feelings for Vox

Observations during episode 2/4.

During the whole episode, it becomes obvious that Vox had feelings for Alastor that persisted for all these decades, never fading. We see it in more or less every single moment he is on screen during "It's A Deal".

Some argue the feelings might be one-sided. But, without claiming to know the exact nature of Alastor’s emotions, I disagree. In my opinion, his actions reveal an intense fondness and affection for Vox in return, expressed in his own subtle, guarded way and hidden behind his "I never care about anyone" attitude.

I cannot tell yet what his Grand Plan might be, by delivering himself to Vox. (My best guess is that it connects to fulfilling his deal with Rosie; protecting Charlie seems to be part of that mission.)

The fact remains, no matter the goal, that he could have chosen many different approaches here. When he seals his deal with Vox (in the flirtiest way possible, fully aware of his effect on him), he could have set clear limits, specified that at least certain things are taboo. (There is literally no question Vox would have said yes anyway, even if Alastor would have limited what he is allowed to do within the deal itself). Yet, Alastor brought up no restrictions at all. Almost as if he trusts Vox not to take things too far.

And yes, I do believe this is this very sentiment here, the remnants of trust. At his lowest point, stepped on by everyone around him (the hotel crew entirely ignoring that he is in a horrible state, physically and psychologically, Lucifer pushing him further, his patron making fun of his situation and humiliating him), weakened, in pain, cornered, Alastor goes to Vox. And more: He offers himself as his captive.

The prideful Radio Demon willingly becomes Vox’s prisoner, without restriction.

This is immense.

Yes, Alastor is clearly bothered by being paraded around as weak, but beneath that lies a strange notion of something else, born from familiarity maybe, and the belief that Vox (probably, hopefully) won’t overstep too much.

He let's Vox have this and he does not interrupt him in any way or form. The deal is to be his prisoner; the deal is not to entertain his wildest ideas without a comment or protest or even fight. Yet, Alastor tries nothing of that sort.

And Vox? Vox, as Alastor predicted, does, indeed, not go too far. The “torture” he boasted about for his enemies earlier that season never happens.

A parade? A smoothie date? A TV show talking about Alastor's tail? Humiliation about shown as weak aside (and I fully expect that Alastor plans to prove to the world that he is not weak at all later anyway), nothing of that is all too bad by any means.

(I wrote about the tail tale in another post, but I want to point out that saying he has no tail is a very weird way of humiliating him, when it seems obvious that pointing out he does have a tail would be much more embarrassing for Alastor, who hates being seen as cute. Maybe Vox knows he has a tail indeed, and would hate to share that knowledge? Just a thought.)

Some poeple might say it crosses the line that Vox makes Alastor watch him and Valentino. But I, for my part, think Vox knows Alastor very well and where his limits are and what he can do without harming him in ways he would not forgive. (And that harming him beyond their usual games is not his intention becomes more than clear.)

Alastor can turn his head 360° and he uses this ability when he does not want to see something (as shown in the cinema promo material). Yet, he watches. He does not have his eyes closed, he does not turn his head, he does not utter any complaint. - While a scene later it's shown that he is very much capable of speaking and acting and Vox's ways of tying him up aren't effective at all.

Some people in the fandom love to infantilize Alastor, but he is a cunning, clever, suave old man. He says what he thinks, captive or not, and he even has his powers and could make adjustments to his imprisonment.

It is a decision that he does not.

And despite having him captive, Vox holds back, mostly, from invading his personal space (different from Rosie, what I find very interesting, her hand is in his hair/on his ears constantly) until Alastor - in his way - invites him to have another little ... "battle".

And during this last song, oh boy, it becomes obvious that Alastor is into the way Vox acts there. It is their form of a dance (or their form of a sex scene), and it is highly intimate and sensual.

So, well, observing all of this, my fazit is:

After Alastor has nothing and no one left (but Niffty maybe), he goes to Vox. With a plan, sure, yet he yearns for Vox's attention. As a different post pointed out, Vox does not need him. Vox wants him, so much that he forgets about his Heaven plans; despite what happened, he is obsessed with him. And hells, does Alastor need to be wanted at that point. Where they stand now, and being the fools they are, the price is a certain humiliation, but, as it seems, if he has to pick someone to humiliate him, his choice is Vox.

But more:

The connection between them is still strong. And Alastor, at his weakest, craves something that once felt like home.

Another idea somewhat Similar to Follow me , where he finds the reader stranded.

Fate

The gold-trimmed edge that your exploring digits slid across felt icy as it met their numbness.

It felt like nothing, yet something simultaneously, and in your delirious mind, you couldn't fathom what stood before you.

As you looked up the image of death that stared down, he, himself, was intently focused on your caress; on the acceptance you greeted it with as your knees visbally quivered.

-As your mortality was evident.

"Stay with me…" you begged.

Although it'd been a possibility, you'd always feared dying alone.

But even so, If you'd spent your life seldom, would it be greedy to ask for just a touch of mercy at your end?

Even if it was from death itself.

Somewhere in your mind, where all of your collected thoughts that hardly mattered went, it existed.

"Please?" you were not above begging, hoping to trade off your end with something kinder.

Your hazy vision became even more obscured by your sorrow, making gloom and gold the only thing you could make out.

Heavy thunderstorms boomed far in the distance, their echoes, though merely fractions of their true roar, still making you shiver as they reached you.

'It's cold…'

"It's So cold," you shivered, and you dared to complain with a shattered smile.

You broke before the sky did, and as you did, you cried.

The soaked ground beneath you felt as though it'd swallowed you down with each step you took, and before you collapsed to its suffocating demise, you put all of your strength into holding on to what was closest.

The hooded figure held genuine curiosity that was conveyed by the slow head tilt that proceeded as he watched with interest.

-then surprised at your desperation as your arms held onto his legs.

Much more, when you looked up at him with strangely beautiful eyes that held not only the sorrows of the day but the ghosts of their predecessors.

He felt something odd, something forgiving.

a hand gloved in the same thick, black material that draped over his golden, ghastly face came down to you.

It fell to the crown of your head with its large palm before it dipped down and slowly shifted.

Soon, the back of his fingers scaled down your somber expression before it rested, as the deep blue gaze hidden behind shadows and thick lenses admired you.

Death, as you knew it gazed down at you with a flourish of something tangible as you existed with peace in the comfort of his single hand that had done nothing but form craters and bring disaster.

Beneath his mask that hid his true face, Higgs smiled.

He did so gently as he tutted at such a precious find in this world of seemingly endless cataclysms.

He came down to your level, and as your lip quivered while you tried to speak, a finger was pressed to them, gently seeking silence from you.

"Shhh..."

If only you knew how alluring you looked when you gazed up at him so utterly hopeful for his mercy, you wouldn't later have the insistency to question him on the matter.

"Higgs," you said with interest as you looked over to the large beast he created, bringing it forth with the same hand that had been so gentle with you before and had never once searched for you amid the dooms he created.

"Darlin?" he asked back with a soft purr, hardly turning to look at you, only shifting his eyes.

And without the placement of that mask you've gotten so used to gazing at, you could actually catch the moment his eyes greeted yours, rather than just feel it.

Against your will, your smile formed, although it was soft and nearly nonextant as he addressed you, never with your name, but with something sweeter.

You stepped closer to him and as you did, the gear you wore, and that had once felt like just a bit too much felt like a second part of you.

Either by coincidence or careful planning, it matched his, and it made you feel somewhat closer, moreso when he'd been so animated when he'd presented it to you, pointing out the detail.

-Especially the cloak that flowed just a bit longer than his did.

"More coverage," he murmured as he brought down your hood and marveled at you with what started off as a musing pout, then morphed into a triumphant grin.

He made sure to clothe you properly, where not a drop could reach you, and it was without a doubt he cared about you.

But why?

"Why do you keep me around?" you asked him, and as self-deplorable as the question should sound, you held more curiosity than anything.

You could see his eyes gently close as a little smirk tugged at his lips,

"That little question of yours..." he murmured as his mask manifested, and he finally decided to turn to you, approaching you with ease.

And the man who almost always had something to say, fell silent.

Soon reaching you, the back of his fingers began to caress the length of your face before they dipped down your chin and fell to his side again.

If only he could tell you why he'd kept you so close, saving you from the timefall; why he'd created rifts in dimensions to ensure your safety while knowing nothing about you.

-if only he knew himself.

But all he could really tell you was the events of the day, just as you remembered them.

As he approached you, he moved just as the beast he created did, with a predatory stalk that rounded prey before it pounced.

Soon he stood behind you, and as his arm fell over your shoulder and crossed your chest, he held you close, his obscured face resting by your neck.

He took in a long breath while your body submitted, falling back into his embrace that felt so familiar and comforting.

"Fate... I suppose," he murmured coyly as the sky roared, and the air felt thicker.

And if you admitted to anyone else how much you loved the atmosphere now, you'd be considered just as deranged as the man who held you so gently now.

"So cold..." you breathed, not really bothered by the weather, finding warmth in your gear, and the transferred heat of his embrace.

The first meeting

Higgs Monaghan x gn!Reader

(or in other words, wanted terrorist loves harassing his local ups delivery service)

[authers notes: now i know i said i'd probably never write anything again.... buuuut i started playing Death Stranding 1..and I'm not even halfway through, and i wanted to write a fic of emo Troy baker Higgs, so uh.. here, have this. Any spelling mistakes are on me (it's literally my 2nd fic i've ever written, be nice im emotionally unstable lmao), mentions of getting chased and almost drowning and like one or two mentions of blood, Sam shows up at the very end as a little surprise guest, anyway have a lovely day/afternoon/night, peace✌️]

Now being a porter came with it's fair share of risks, a fucked up back, sore shoulders, getting caught in a timefall downpour in the middle of nowhere, getting surrounded by BTs, falling down a hill and loosing all of your cargo and so on, but those were just simply the risks that came with the job, though as your feet moved as quickly as you could with the boxes on your back that swayed and threatend to throw you off balance as you ran from the group of MULEs behind you, hungry to get their hands on the orders that you had strapped to your back, was probably one of the most annoying risks that came with being a porter, you had delt with them a few times, most of the time being able to get away by hiding in some tall grass or just overall being a bit quicker than them, though this group seemed to be a bit faster than the normal groups of MULEs that you'd occasionally run into on deliveries.

Running over the moss coverd rocks you did your best to keep your footing steady and tried not to slip as you moved to the side to dodge one of them with a grunt as they tried to grab you, the maneuver making them let out a shout as they landed on the rocky ground, the other two running past they're friend that laid on the gravel not paying much mind to them other than triying no to trip over their body as they ran, too focused on the precious cargo that you carried.

You could feel exhaustion slowly creeping up on you as you pushed your body to run faster, the sound of rushing water close by as you made your way to where an old ladder laid, connecting the gap between the rocks above the rapid flowing river below, you had been down this path many times, hell you knew it like the back of your hand so usually you wouldn't be so nervous about crossing the old rusty thing, the one thing you didn't count on this delivery however, was getting chased by cargo hungry maniacs that sometimes would venture out of there territory to harass other porters like yourself.

The sound of fast footfalls behind you made your adrenaline rush as you made your way up the rockside with the rope that hung off it's side, doing your best to keep yourself from falling backwards as you scaled up the rough stone, the water rushed beneath the makeshift bridge violently, the thunder like sound now blocking out the noise of the group behind you.

Out of breath and your heart beating quickly you ready yourself to cross the ladder as carfully as you could, the metal creaking beneath you as you carfully and quickly made your way to the middle, you took a breath and dared to look back over your shoulder to check on the group that was trailing you, your eyes widen as one of them grabbed ahold of the ladder you were standing on and began to shake it to throw you off balance, making you sway from side to side.

The added cargo on your back threw you off easily as you feel your foot slip to the side making you fall down into the rushing water below, the cold temperature of the river made your body freez as you plunged below the surface making it hard for you to move your arms and legs for a second before doing your best to swim to back up, successfully you breached above the water and took a breath of freash air.

Doing your best to clear your blurry vision of the water in your eyes, you looked around now well aware of the cargo that had detached from the fall now floating freely in the water, the group of MULEs grabbing whatever they could as the boxes rushed past the shour line, leaving you to be pushed futher down with the current, your cries for help going unheard and ignored as you were thrown back under the surface, water filling your mouth and lungs from not having time to hold your breath before being dragged back under the water.

Breaching the surface again you flailled a bit as you try to swim to the side of the river bank to stop yourself from flowing further down the river, though with exaustion finally catching up to you, your muscles proved to almost be at their limit as your hand barley scraped by the side of a rock to try to stop yourself only to miss as another strong rush of water violently pushed you back under. In your desperation you opend your eyes in the water to try to see where the hell you were going only for a sharp rock that stuck out from the underside of the river bank to come into veiw, and without time to react your body smashed into the the rough stone hard before you continued to float freely down the fast paced river.

Barly conscious you try and struggle to breach the surface once again, though failing this time due to the tiredness that corsed through your bones, in your fuzzy vision under the water your eyes caught a figure in black at the side of the river that stood with their hands behind their back, head tilted as they watched you flow down the rushing stream, weakly and in a attempt of survival you raised your hand towrds the figure in dark clothing in hopes that they would help you and pull you out.

Only for them to stand idle, watching you flow further and further down the rushing current of water, the last thing you see of the them is their hand raising and waving to you as if bidding you farewell, a wave of panic settled over you as you try to look for a way out of the cold water, as you were surveying any way out, your blurry vision caught sight of just where the rushing water was taking you, fast approaching was the edge of the cliff, the torrent of water cascading off the the side of the mountain with a thunderous roar.

A small rush of adrenaline corsed through your body as you desperately looked around for a way out, swimming up you weakly pop your head up just above the water, gasping in freash air when you did and shaking your head to get the droplets of water out of your eyes, your arms fighting to keep you above the rivers cold surface.

Looking around in a panic your eyes spot a large old fallen tree, the old chunk of wood laid on it's side on a small cliff that hung above the waters surface, the branches hanging just low enough that you could reach and hoist yourself to safety. As the adrenaline rush begain to wear off you knew you needed to make your move or else you coud very well die and cause a damn void-out this close to the City, fighting against exhaustion and in one final attempt of saving yourself you grab ahold of a stray branch that was just low enough to pull yourself up above and out of the water to catch your breath, successfully stopping yourself from flowing any further down the rushing river.

Tieredly you pulled yourself up further onto the thick branch, your body coming to rest on the bark as your arms fall weakly between the limbs, fingers brushing the water below you as you breath heavily. Coming out in shaky huffs of air you began to cough and gag up the water out of your lungs, making your body shake and burn with the force as you gasp fresh air back into your buring throat. With a groan of pain you rest your head on your arm you and take a moment to think, your mind racing with the near death experience you just went through, as you lay there in silence your ears pick up the sound of footsteps walking towards you slowly, the gravel moving under their shoes as they walked, unable to lift your head fully at the moment you twist your neck slightly to look at whoever was approaching you.

A deep voice spoke as they came to a stop in front of you, "Well, well, well.. ain't you a fighter?" a deep male voice spoke as he came to crouch down in front of you, his arms resting on his knees, your eyebrows furrowed as you weakly glare at the figure in black, a golden skull mask covering his face, the same figure that stood by and watched you nearly get swallowed by the raging water "thought i was gonna have myself a show today but... seems like the fun is ruined" he said mocking a disappointed tone before his hand came to poke your shoulder lightly in a playful manner "seems like you had yourself a little accident back there, huh little porter?" he said teasingly. You could just hear the smile behind the mask he was wearing, and you couldn't help but glare up at him. With a growl, you spoke angerly. "Go... fuck yourself, you were just going to let me fall to my death and cause a void-out you asshole" you shakily say before you spat at the ground next to his feet, continuing to scowl up at him in anger you opend your mouth to continue speaking "what the hell is wrong with you, you fucking prick?" you say, weakly clenching your fist in anger.

A laugh escaped his lips at your words as if you had told him a joke and he raised his arm, his pointer finger wiggled disapprovingly in your face as he spoke, "Now that's a big ol' mouth ya got there for having that big of a gash on that pretty little head of yours, so i wouldn't be so rude to your savior". he said in a teasing tone, pulling his arm back to rest on his knee. You shot daggers up at the man as you spoke agian, "My savior? you just stood there and would have watched me get launched off the edge of the cliff if i didn'tstop myself! I would have died and caused a fucking void-out just a few miles away from the City!" you weakly shouted at him.

A chuckle left his lips as he leaned back a bit, "Hmm, maybe you're right, buuut," he stopped speaking as he looked over his shoulder, pointing to the sky before continuing to speak. "By the look of that there storm coming in, i don't think you'd want me to leave you here, huh?" he said looking back towards you again ith a tilt of his head, a frown crossed your face as your eyes peak up at the sky, the ominous warning sign of the upside-down rainbow that peaked below the cotton clouds a forewarning of the timefall downpour that was heading your way.

You lay your head back down on your arm as you looked back at the man that was still crouched down in front of you, eyebrows now furrowed in pain and closing your eyes as the adrenaline was fully wearing off and a throbbing burning sensation took over your body as you groan in pain "fuck" you swore under your breath as the cold air started to get to you. Making your body shake violently, the blood running down your forehead stained the arm of your porter suit and dripping down into the water slowly, "look man just piss off i.. i can take care of myself" you say, your words slurring as you spoke while trying to move yourself but only getting as far as rolling onto your back and laying accross the uncomfortable tree branches, your hand weakly coming up to to cover the wound on your head.

The rustling of clothes caught your attention as you tierdly looked back over at the hooded man that stood up, now with his hands on his hips and head tilting to the side with a low hum, "you know what sweetheart? i like ya, you've got guts talkin' to me like that," he said, a soft chuckle leaving his lips as he closed the distance between the two of you, now staring directly down at you as he stood above you, "i think you and me will get along just fine, ...hell best friends even." he said in a sarcastically sweet tone, his voice slowly fading away as you start to loose consciousness, your eyesight blurring as black dots danced around your vision, the last thing you regester is the hooded man leaning down towards you and his arms hooking under your legs and upper back and gently lifted you up to his chest as he softly hummed a low tune to himself, the warmth of his body and the sound of his sickeningly voice making you melt into his arms before it all went dark.

The next thing you hear is a muffle call of your name making you wince slightly at the sound not wanting to move yet, you curled into yourself slightly as another call of your name came from the person, this time a bit louder than the one before and your eyes slightly open just a bit, recoiling slightly at the light of the outside before blinking and looking at the person that stood in front of you, that happened to be calling your name, though muffled you know that voice from anywhere, having ran into the other porter many times on your deliveries. "Sam?..." you said, your voice cracking from just waking up and from the lack of fresh water, your vision slowly unbluring as your eyes meet his.

The said older man had a confused and worried look on his face as he examined you, kneeling down slightly as he spoke again, "What the hell happened to you?" he asked roughly as he grabbed his water flask and held it out for you to take a drink out of, with a weak "thank you" you grabbed the flask with one hand while the other pushed yourself up into a sitting position and took a few gulps of the fresh drinking water, as you did he spoke again, "you too tierd to make it to your private room or something? why the hell are you passed out outside?" he joked lightly as he grabbed his flask back as you handed it back to him.

You let out a breath as you finally looked around taking in your surroundings, just behind the man the obvious sound of the timefall hitting the soil caught your attention, the cover the building protecting you from the deadly rain, you were no longer out in the open next to a rushing waterfall laying on the fallen tree, now instead you were on the ground in front of the distribution center of Capital Knot City.

swallowing, you looked back at Sam and spoke, "I just.. had a bad run-in with some MULEs.. that's all, " you say as you slowly stood up, Sam rising with you, "shit, so that's why you don't have any cargo, huh?" he asked crossing his arms.You sigh and nod your head disappointed "ya fell into a river trying to cross on a ladder, assholes made sure i'd fall in to so they could grab whatever they wanted." you said before you sighed and looked down with a small frown, a short moment of silence passed before he patted your shoulder gently before his hand went back to steady himself with the strap of the cargo backpack as he swayed a bit "well I'm glad you made it back safely." He said with a nod as he got ready to go out and deliver packeges himself.

You blink at his words as a thought crossed your mind, wait... how did you get back here? you don't remember walking or anything. Hell, the last thing you remember was passing out at the river bank after nearly getting thrown off the cliff by the rushing waterfall and.. the man in the golden skull mask, was he the one that dropped you off here? If so, how? he didn't look like any porter you had ever encountered on your journeys before.

Your thoughts were interrupted by an approaching headache, the throb making you groan quietly as you rub your face, you hear Sam speak again as he began walking away, his hood automatically coming to cover his head from the rain, "go rest up, you look like shit" he said in a dry joking tone making you let out a light laugh as you shook your head, "ya, ya, be safe asshole" you say as you turn around and slowly made your way down into the distribution center, the both of you parting your ways, you sigh as you made your way to the elevator in the middle of the room, your hand coming up to check on the gash on your head, only to be meant with stitches and what felt like a bandaid, you frown cofused and carfully peel the bandage off your forehead and hold it out in front of you to examin it, you blink and almost let out a laugh of disbelief at the smily faces that decorated the bandaid, "what the fuck" you said to yourself quietly as the floor began to slowly descend to where your privateroom was located, god you were going to need a drink after this.

In the distance up on a cliff stood Higgs, he watching as you and Sam said your goodbyes and parted separate ways, his arms crossed as he observed the two of you, a chuckle leaving his lips and his hand reached into one of his pockets and and pulled out a copy of your porter ID, his head tilting down as he examined it and spoke to himself "oh yeah, we'll be fine friends." He said lowly, his lips curling into a small smirk behind the golden skull mask as he turned himself around, and with a small shrug of his shoulders, he disappeared in the blink of an eye.

“I think the beach is real”

“Oh?” The half picked out Caesar salad long forgotten as you meet the hazel gaze of the tall woman seating in front of you. Lucy, or Lulu to you. She had a sharpness to her; she was as blunt as a butter knife but that’s half the reason you two became friends. She told it as it was. She wasn’t afraid to stick up to your attitude. You challenged her when she needs someone to set her straight.

“What’s got you getting so philosophical.”

“I meet someone. He’s…. helped me understand it better” You could have helped her. That would risk everything for you.

“How did he manage to do that. I’ve been trying to show you for years and all I get is you looking at me like a case study.” You’ve traded the salad for a cigarette.

“I can’t say much but he’s shown me so much.” She has this softness to her. You don’t see this much anymore.

It’s nice.

“How’s the research going? You look like you haven’t slept, and you’ve barely finished your food.” Nothing gets past her does it. She has the uncanny ability to turn any conversation into a session.

“It’s fine” Theres that look “I’m serious, it’s fine. I need to run by some samples, but I can’t find them in the Bridges system. They’re too specific for my needs and no one is willing to go retrieve them.”

“What exactly do you need that no one can go get for you?”

“I need samples of Chiralium” You forced a response. It wasn’t entirely untrue, but she didn’t need to know that.

You could tell she wanted to challenge that but you’re thankful she didn’t. Its already hard enough to explain to your colleagues.

There’s a ding from Lulu’s phone, just as she checks it, she’s up. Pained expression gracing her delicate features.

“Sorry, I have to take this. I’ll call you later” She was gone as soon as she spoke. Already forwarding some credits for you to pay with.

Who ever this guy was, he’s got her hooked.

“Oi, Doc”

 Well, there goes your perfect concentration. With a slight jolt of your hand, your prized microscope goes off kilter.  Turning with a blazing look, there stands your tiresome coworker, Mikey as he would prefer to be called. He leaned against the table, merely centimeters away from you. God, you can smell his cheap cologne. You’d hoped with his wondering eye finding the new lab assistant, Giselle. He’d finally leave you alone. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

“What Michael.” There was a tightness in your voice, maybe it would make him go away.

With a roll of his eyes, he pushed away from your personal space. “No need to give me that look. Big man needs you, sounded like it was important.”

Now that was interesting.

Gathering your supplies, you’ve mastered the art of packing as many objects into your handbag as possible. You didn’t have long to catch him before he goes offline again.

Getting through the large campus was a breeze, from outside of the science division of the OC, it looks imposing, sterile, void of any sort of life. The LED white lights hummed as the click clack of your short heels made their way on the concrete. For most people, the off-white walls and cool lighting were claustrophobic. For you, it was calming. Like nothing really changes here. It saved you from the chaos of the outside world.

You’ve had enough of the outside for a lifetime.

Finally, the head office was in sight. Just as you pass into the foyer, there’s a group of what looked like heavily armed men, the security division. Why would they need to be here? Oh well, not your problem.

As you round the corner, you see the familiar black door with a “Dr. Carl Hartsen” placed neatly to the right. You faintly tap your index finger on the door. Nothing. He must not be online yet. You make your way in anyway.

The room was empty. It looks like it’s hardly been used. Almost in perfect condition really. As you make it to the desk, there’s a quieten ding. Coming from above you. A small projector comes to life as a blue tinted figure appears out of nowhere behind the desk. He’s neatly dress, glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. The orange device attached to his chest, beeping softly. A reminder of his fate.

“Ah, Hello. Thank you for coming on such short notice.” The tall, wiry hologram of smiles calmly, knowingly.

“It’s ok sir, I’m sorry I haven’t gotten the recent reports written up. This data has been kicking my ass harder than I expected”

“We’ve been over this, no need to be so formal.”

“I don’t think saying ‘ass’ in front of your superior is formal” 

“Well, as formal as you are. I’m not a “sir” anymore, not to you anyway. We’re equals now.” He makes his way around the desk, to stand beside you. Leaning against the table. The blue of his hologram illuminating the room around you. “Besides, you’re making me sound old”

“Ah well, carl-Heartman. I would even dream of doing that.” Feigning insult, you smile. “I’m still getting used to being promoted business. I can’t believe I have to boss around all the assistants; they all look at me like kicked puppies.”

“Don’t let it get to you; it toughens them up really” Giving you a cheeky wink. “Anyway, I didn’t call you here for an update on your promotion. I-Well, how do a put this” He looks away sheepishly from you. He was not one to beat around the bush.

“You’re needed in a meeting with head office. It’s…. very important that you go.” There was a hint of pity in his brown eyes.

“What kind of meeting? Why am I only being told of this meeting now?” The familiar flare of anxiety bubbles in your chest. You push it away with anger.

“Not one I can openly discuss here. I will be with you, but she will be doing most of the talking.” She? There’s a pause. The beeping on his chest quickens “Shit, I don’t have much time.” Heartman’s lips purse as he looks away and back to you. Like he’s mulling something over in his head.

“ You-“

A knock startles both of you. You really were jumpy today. Maybe lay off the caffeine.

“Come in” Heartman straightens up with a cough.

The door revealed an older man, clothed in a black dress suit. He looked important. You bite the inside of your cheek. The bubbles only got worse.

“Heartman” The unknown man nods to the hologram beside you before turning his sharp gaze to you, addressing you with some force. “They’re ready to see you”

Your nervous eyes meet Heartman’s; he smiles softly at you. “Don’t worry, I’ll be right there in a few minutes” With that he disappears.

The walk to the conference room was quiet and tense. The man in black didn’t even turn to acknowledge you as you both left the room. Rude. It wasn’t a long walk but it almost like you were being chaperoned to your own doom. That gnawing feeling in your chest only grows more apparent. Not now. You can almost feel the ink in your veins drip from your fingers. Like the darkness could swallow you at any moment.

Jesus Christ, not now.

When you finally get to the room, you really wish it would.

There, by the head of the table stood another formal looking man, well combed brown hair in a navy-blue suit. All American, all sleaze. His smile reminded you of a shark, too many teeth. He stared at you like you were some sort of insect on display. Like he could crush you in an instant.

But nothing he could do would compete to the woman sitting beside him. Right at the center of the table, she sat there with a warm smile and cold eyes. Blond hair perfect, signature red dress prominent against the greys of the room around her.

There sat the queen herself.

AmelieStrand.

“Thank you for joining us on such short notice, please have a seat” Her voice light and airy. With a level of sophistication that you would never achieve in your lifetime.

This can’t be real. You’ve entered the lion’s den.

Heartman you better get your ass in here right now.

“Erm-Thank you ma’am.” It almost felt painful to make your way to an empty seat nearest to the door. You didn’t even notice there was two other men in the room. Both sat on the side of the table opposite the door.

All eyes were on you.

The two men looked to be in combat gear. The same as the the troops stationed outside. Why would they be here? What kind of meeting is this? Where was Heartman?

The first of the men was tanned, probably Hispanic, eyes as black as his slicked back hair. He was handsome, very handsome. Perfectly chiseled jawline, with a 5 o’clock shadow that would have others flocking to him. He smiled at you, now that was a sight.

You almost didn’t notice the most strikingly pale green eyes staring at you from beside the ridiculously handsome man. Ok, now you’re staring.

Amelia called your name. Her blue eyes bore into yours, like she was trying to find something within them. You squirm in your seat.

“Excellent, we’ll proceed. Now, I’ve called you all here for a matter of-”

“Excuse me Ma’am. Please forgive me but I was told Heartman would be here. Should we wait for him” There’s no way you’d be doing this without him.

You can see the man beside Amelia’s eye twitch. Though, she herself just smiled politely.

“Don’t worry, he’ll be here in a few moments. You can catch him up on anything he’s missed.” She stands. That’s the end of that.

“I assume you all are wondering why I’ve called you here. I’ll keep this short.” Gesturing to you “I’ve read your paper on ‘How death has changed DNA’, amazing work. Your work on the creation of beached things, is next to none I’ve read.  Your involvement in Project Hades was remarkable”

Hades.  Of course, she called you here because of that disaster. The unpleasant memories begin to surface. You can feel your fingernails dig into your palm.

Amelia makes her way towards you. Her gold neckless jingles with her smooth movement. A feeling of unease carries through you.  Her compliments felt hollow.

“That is why I need you to go to Washington DC to retrieve the last remains of the first BT.”

You could feel yourself twisting rapidly to face her, disbelief clear on your face. This can’t be real. She can’t be serious. A quick glance at the two men, shows they share in her astonishment.

“Ma’am with all due respect, my paper was just a theory into the creation of beached things and how genetics plays into their conception. I haven’t been able to prove anything in any concrete way. The Hades project was a complete failure-”

She cuts you off. “That is why you need those samples. I believe with the right materials and time. You can make it work. I can provide you with all the resources to get you to your destination.”

“Madam Strand, thank you for this offer but I can’t go out there. I’m not a porter. I don’t have the skills to even get to Nevada without getting myself into a voidout.” Or worse.

“That’s why they’re here.” Strand finally sets her gaze to the two-man watching silently. “Alejandro, may you introduce yourself and your companion.”

“Ehum, Of course Madam.” Mr. Handsome straightens up. “Hola, my name is Alejandro Torres. I’m the lead operative for security for Bridges. This is my compatriot, Neil Vana. He’s one of the most skilled Porters in the business.” Torres, smiles as he claps the shoulder of the pale man. He looked like he would rather be doing anything else than be here. His green eyes darting between Torres and Ameila. Before ultimately landing on your own. You bristle; his gaze is almost unnerving.

“Neil” That got his attention. He gapes wide eyed at the woman in red. She was standing directly beside you now. “I need you to accompany her on this expedition. She’ll need an expert porter to make it there and back.”

His eyes darted between yourself and Amelia. Dark brows furrow in confusion. “I can do this job on my own.” His voice was soft; you would almost have to strain to hear it. He also has a slight accent. “I don’t need a civie slowing me down”

Ouch, rude much? He wasn’t exactly wrong. Though you could do without the cheek. Before you got a chance to retort.

“She’ll need to collect data along the way, and I’m not sure about you but I don’t think you would know what you’re looking for Mr Vana.” Thank God, Finally Heartman makes an appearance. Neil makes a face but doesn’t say anything.

“Forgive my delay. I had to go offline for a bit. You understand. I’m Heartman by the way. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Gentleman. I would shake your hands but-” He pushes his hologram hand through the table.

“There’s nothing to forgive, Heartman. I’m glad you could make it but unfortunately, I must take my leave. Agent Jefferson will fill you in on the details. I’ll meet you two at the exit port in two days, at 0600 hours.”

Just as she leaves, she gives your shoulder a squeeze. It felt cold.

After what felt like hours, you can leave the conference room. The rest of the meeting was a blurr, you didn’t really focus on anything other than the fact that you had to leave the town in two days. It’s been 3 years since you stepped foot outside. You bite your cheek again, wincing at the pain. It was something to focus on.

“Hey, Doc. Got a minute?” The smooth deep voice of Alejandro strolls towards you. Alone this time.

You and Heartman exchange glances, you give the taller man a nod. “I’ll meet you back in my office tomorrow morning. Rest well.” As he vanished you turned back to Alejandro.

“Don’t mind my friend, he’s a bit una reina de hielo. He’s a good man really. Just give him time.” You don’t doubt Alejandro, but that doesn’t change the fact you’re going to have to deal with him for weeks until he warms up to you. If he ever will.

“I’m sure he is, but he’s right. Going out to the next state is one thing, across the country is a whole other story.” You could use a cigarette.

“Don’t discredit yourself yet, Doctora. You don’t know what your capable of” With a smirk and wink, the tall dark man makes his way down the hall.

You spit the words like poison, but Higgs only smiled, his fingers drifting along his guitar and coaxing a gritty refrain from the strings. “This is just the opening act, sweetheart,” he promised, and at the flash in your eyes - as though you didn’t believe him - he quirked a brow and lifted his guitar from his lap. “That bein’ said, I suppose you’re right. It’s about time we get this show on the road.”

Abruptly, the ghost mech drew to a shuddering stop, releasing its grasp on your hips. You cursed as you pitched forward, barely managing to keep yourself aloft with the flat of your palms planted against the ground. Even so, your forearms trembled, chest heaving as you took advantage of the reprieve to drag in air, and when you swung your gaze on him, your expression darkened.

“Go on then,” Higgs coaxed you, making himself comfortable. Between his thighs sprouted a length of the same make as the mech’s, lubricant dribbling readily from the tip, and his grin broadened as he watched that knowledge settle on your face. “You know what to do.”

For a moment he wondered if you’d take your chances and flee, the cargo strewn about you be damned, but no. You weren’t that kind of porter, were you? You’d finish the job, even if your eyelids hung heavy and your body bowed under the weight. Even if your legs could barely hold you up. 

Even if it meant wrapping grass-stained fingers around his shoulders and hauling yourself onto his lap, knees fitting snugly to either side of his hips. Your lips twisted as you did so - a necessary evil, he could see you thinking, if you wanted to prevent your exhausted body from crumpling right back to the ground.  

“Well?” Higgs’ eyes flickered between your tear-stained face and the seat he’d so graciously offered you, a hand curling lazily around your naked hip. A shiver trembled through your flank at the touch, a harsh breath escaping your nose before you firmed your lips and used your grasp on his shoulders to pull yourself up. “That’s it. Nice and slow, now.”

“Shut up,” you hissed between your teeth, the fire in your gaze immediately undermined by the whimper you expelled as you lined yourself up with his cock and bore down, the slick metal head slipping past your entrance with a soft, wet pop. 

You choked on a curse as you took him down to the root, not a trace of resistance to be found in that well-used hole of yours. His ghost mech had seen to that.
