GMO’s have a negative impact on our world and its living organisms. They affect our environment, food, animals, and human beings. It is argumentative to say they are not good for the world due to little being known about them. They have serious side affects concerning the genetic engineering department.

GMO’s and the environment?

The GMO’s have a negative but also positive impact. either way articles show that, ”More than 80% of all genetically modified crops grown worldwide have been engineered for herbicide tolerance.2 As a result, the use of toxic herbicides, such as Roundup®, has increased fifteenfold since GMOs were first introduced.3 In March 2015, the World Health Organization determined that the herbicide glyphosate (the key ingredient in Roundup®) is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”Genetically modified crops also are responsible for the emergence of “superweeds” and “superbugs,” which can only be killed with ever more toxic poisons such as 2,4-D (a major ingredient in Agent Orange).4,5Most GMOs are a direct extension of chemical agriculture and are developed and sold by the world’s largest chemical companies. The long term impacts of these GMOs are unknown. Once released into the environment, these novel organisms cannot be recalled.” they benefit yet contradict their efforts to help the world.

How do GMOs affect farmers?

Believe it or not but farmers are harmed the most by GMO’s. As stated in the articles, “ Because GMOs are novel life forms, biotechnology companies have been able to obtain patents to control the use and distribution of their genetically engineered seeds. Genetically modified crops therefore pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security of any country where they are grown.” These farmers lose their jobs and lose lots of crops which is a serious problem. This puts in risk the farmers lives and the lives of millions of others.

Are GMO’s labeled? Labels help us know what our food has in it. And unfortunately not all GMO’s are labeled for the publics safety. According to the Non-GMO Project, “Sixty-four countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, require genetically modified foods to be labeled. Canada does not require any GMO labeling.” Although it is not required to label, people will not be sure if their food contains anything they do not want. It would not be safe to not have the GMO’s labeled due to not much information known about them. In fact it states that, “I n the absence of credible independent long-term feeding studies, the safety of GMOs is unknown. Increasingly, citizens are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt out of the GMO experiment.” So in fact, the impact of GMO’s is unknown. Knowing this unevaluable information, people do not know if what they are eating is safe or not because they cannot know if it is GMO or Non-GMO.

What are GMO’s? According to the Non-GMO Project it states that, “Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.” Firstly, this breaks the principles of crossbreeding and violating a social norm. Genetic engineering can also produce some harmful side affects for the world. Those include “New Allergens in the Food Supply, Antibiotic Resistance, Production of New Toxins, Concentration of Toxic Metals, Enhancement of the Environment for Toxic Fungi., Unknown Harms, Gene Transfer to Wild or Weedy Relatives, Change in Herbicide Use Patterns” and maybe even more! The possibility that the GMO’s turn out with serious side affects is concerning.

Hey there! This is my first entry to my growing awareness of genetically modified organisms, also known as GMO’s. This blog is dedicated to the affects of what genetically modified organisms can have on our world and the already existing living organisms, including humans. Sadly, genetically modified organisms truly have a negative affect on plant life, animals, food, and humans.
