Cervimancy: Sambar, Strength

Sambar are one of the few deer species known to fight rather than flee, typically against dholes or feral dogs. If nearby, they'll use bodies of water to their advantage, standing knee-deep and striking out with their front hooves or antlers. If in a group, they'll back into a defensive unit, protecting one another's vulnerable hindquarters.

However, they often fall prey to Bengal tigers, especially in India. In fact, tigers have been said to mimic sambar alarm calls, luring in curious deer.

The red or "sore" spot on their necks is not a wound, but a gland that produces white or reddish fluid. It's most prominent during the rut and on pregnant or lactating hinds.

Currently, Columbian and Sitka blacktails are at a taxonomic crossroads. They're considered by some to be subspecies of mule deer, while others consider them their own unique species, Odocoileus columbianus. While their DNA divergence is one of the highest within mammal species, Columbian blacktails and mule deer readily breed together in the Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges. Most hybrids are infertile and even unsuited for life in the wild, but these crosses both thrive and reproduce.

Just your annual heads up, Northern Ontario is actively on fire with little resources from the provincial government to combat them. Over 144 fires on record, you've seen the fire from Armstrong and another from Collins, but several First Nations along the corridor have lost their homes and have been displaced. Please keep them in mind this season as the fires have devastated their homes and displaced them, some were evacuated to Niagara where they face indiscriminate racism.

The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Texas could lose 715 acres to SpaceX under a federal land exchange proposal.

Congress created this wildlife refuge in 1979 to protect its diverse wildlife, including rare species like ocelots, aplomado falcons, and migratory birds such as piping plovers, red knots, green jays and Altamira orioles. The refuge protects some of the best habitat in the United States for the endangered ocelot and is one of the last remaining expanses of public lands in south Texas. SpaceX’s rocket launch activities have already been impacting nearby habitat and destroying shorebird nests, and wildlife can’t afford this lopsided deal.

The Center for Biological Diversity is suing the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to stop this harmful land giveaway, and we need your support.
