Are you publishing the rest of the series??
Nope!
AN AUDIBLE GNOBOOK, GASP SHOCK??!?!?!??!?!
OH RIGHT HEY FRIENDSĀ THE GNOMON AUDIO BOOKāS OUT AND AVAILABLEĀ IF YOU WANT IT. Oooooh, audio book, how fancy~~~~~
And I have a couple (ā¦or more? i will check) free copies available so I guess reblog this post if you want one! And Iāll do a giveaway or something. Itāll end onā¦.uh. Screw it, Iāmma be lazy, ITāS OVER OCTOBER 1ST, timezone countdown goes here. Itās also supposed to be available on other audio book downloady places in the near future but I do not have those details because nobody tells me nothinā.
hey! so i've heard people buzzing about this fic, but i can't for the life of me seem to find it anywhere; where can i read this amazing fic of yours?
Since I get this question over and over despite the point thereās a reason itās gone (aka I sold it to someone), Iām just going to publicly give the link to gnothing so HEREĀ YOU GO.
Hi, i just saw gnomon available on amazon and i was owndering if it's signed? because im new on tumblr and ive been a long time fan of the fic so knowing that it was published makes me really happy and i want to know if a signed copy is available
The amazon ones are not signed! I just sent back another 10 signatures to the publisher, though, so you can send them a message and request one of the "secret" stash if desired. Only the publisher has signed copies, sorry!
first of all, congratulations for Gnobook!šš I've ordered it last week (international shipping is a bitchš) and I can't wait to finally have it in my hands hahahah and nowww the question that you probably don't want to hear and will make you hate me (I'm really sorry) so I wanted to know if Nocturlabe will remain incomplete or if it's going to be updated (if it is, how many chapters are there before it's finished?) aaaand that's it, I hope you're having a great dayš
I gotta be honest, anon, I donāt know whatāll happen. Ever since I actually finished up gnobook, the fic version is just kinda....unappealing to me? ugh thatās a terrible explanation, let me try again. Iāve said a couple of times that gnobook goes in a different direction than whatās up on ao3 at the moment, and itās REALLY hard to get my brain back on the other track. iāve got probably 50% of the next chapter (which is also second to last; there are/were 2 left) done, but it sort of feels like writing something and realizing āactually wait no THIS would be way better iām going to do that insteadā but everyoneās already on Subpar Path 1. Do I finish Path 1 when itās pretty much defunct? On one hand, thereād be official completion and people stop asking me about it, which is nice. On the other, it kinda feels like a complete waste of time since itās not How Things Go anymore, if that makes sense? Sooooo basically I DONāT KNOW~! and regardless it wouldnāt be updated for a while yet because I have to write other things to make money since Iāve realized I really am incapable of holding a regular steady job because my brain hates me, ha ha ha.
hi, luchia, i hope you're doing well!! in an ask a while back you mentioned clepsydra would be more appropriate as a 3rd or 4th sequel. do you have an idea in mind that you think would make a better immediate sequel to gnomon?
I SHOULDNāT ANSWER THIS ONE INSTEAD OF THE OTHER ASKS I NEED TO GET TO BUT IāMMA DO THAT ANYWAY
ok so basically Direct Sequel aka sandglass is the gangās semi-hilarious adventures in trying to be respectable law-abiding citizens cooperating with interpol and it Doesnāt Go Very Well and also super fancy wedding and carope finally getting to burn shit down like the glorious pyromaniac she is and you ACTUALLY SEE MICHELLE AND BASICALLY IāD DO ALL THE SHIT I DIDNāT DO IN GNOFIC BECAUSE ~THATāS NOT IN CANON~ HA HA HA I DONāT HAVE THAT PROBLEM ANYMORE
Look what I got!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi luchia! Just want to ask whether the gnomon will be sold in print?
HOWDY FRIEND I just checked and itās officially purchaseable in print/paperback form off amazon (tadaaaa). You can, of course, still go through the publisher too (link!), but thatās not exciting news. The exciting news is that it looks like people finally got their shit together!!! Yaaay!!!
YO i really want to buy a print version of gnobook but can i only get a print version through dsp?? because i only see ebook versions on Barnes&Noble and Amazon??
Listen, dear anon, as I relate the bone-rattling horror story of The Third Party Printer.
Once upon a time, a publisher needed to print books. It decided to do this with a separate company that specialized in the actual physical printing process, and for a while, it worked out great! Eventually, more responsibilities were given to the printer - first was the obvious ones, which were creating the book and happily shipping it to the bookās new owner. Then, they decided that the printers should also be in charge of putting theĀ ābuy a print versionā option on the major book vendor sites, because it made sense, didnāt it? The order would go directly to the printer, and it would cut out the publisher having to order the orders from the printer for the customers - again, it seemed like it made sense.
But then came gnomonstrosity. It was a cascade of horrible decisions, all made with the wrong priorities in mind. They wanted to keep costs down, so when the time came to get special papers to and from someone who had to sign them, they went cheap.Ā Really, reallyĀ cheap. It took eight business days for papers to ship from Colorado to Florida. SOMEONE couldāve gotten in their car and driven it there personally faster than that. Hell, that sameĀ someone couldāve paid the extra $8 or whatever to get it there in a timely manner. But that someone didnāt realize how painfully cheap the publisher had been, so the problem was not fixed.
(sidenote: this is an issue that Someone is very familiar with because she used to ship shit professionally and had repeatedly seen people freak out and have to leave the country because they went cheap on shipping for immigration paperwork.)
But wait, thereās more!! You see, this cheapness with shipping didnāt end with the papers getting to the publisher in Florida. Oh, no! It continued on its journey all the way to New York, to reach the Third Party Printer! And who knows when it got there? Not me, thatās who!
And that shipping to the printer meant that, when it arrived, it had to be printed. And then those things that were printed were shipped againĀ - this time, to you! And who knows? Maybe itāll be at your doorā¦.rightā¦..nowā¦ā¦ā¦!
or now?
ā¦.now? D:
Happy Gnomon day!!
Thank you!! Happy Gnomon Day to you too, anon! I can only hope itās a happy one.
Hey! I haven't seen you post anything about it, but did you see the Gnomon e-book is up on B&N and Amazon for preorder?
I STILL havenāt seen it because I was in san Diego for a wedding but now that I am off the airplane I am going to post this and say GASP! And also this answers that one personāsĀ question about whether or not itās available on kindle on release day, so hooray for that too!
Congrats on the book! Sorry to bother you, but can i ask you why you hate clepsydra?
Itās almost entirely because I know I can do better. I finished Clepsydra when I was entering my life-threatening depressive episode and it....kind of shows? Thereās very little heart to it beyond angst, and yes, it was a lot more about plottiness, but you need a balance between plot and emotion and I didnāt manage that, at all. Itās clunky.Ā I have some messages in my inbox asking me to explain things that happened, and there is literally no bigger sign of failure at conveying an idea or scenario in writing than people needing to ask me to explain something. A reader should know exactly what Iām trying to say and how Iām trying to say it, because this isnāt fucking poetry, thereās no bonus points for making you think really really hard and try to puzzle out whatās happening. Particularly when itās supposed to be a completedĀ mystery novel type thing - one of the big rules with that is All Things Are Revealed (....excluding Montparnasse things). AND SPEAKING OF WRITING, you can also see the extremely rapid degeneration in prose-POV style differences, and I obviously get way too carried away with my enjoyment of writing Montparnasse, Combeferre basically does nothing but think a lot and get angry and I really really didnāt utilize the two-POV thing as much as I shouldāve. I drag on sections just to keep the POV switch trend going, which is horrible, and itās just a MESS. AND THATāS NOT EVEN STARTING ON THE SHIT I COMPLETELY IGNORED FROM GNOMON???? like the entire story is EXPLICITLY SET UP to go one way, they ACTUALLY DISCUSS THIS THING REPEATEDLY, but i was like LOL LETāS GO DO THIS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING INSTEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and yeah basically clepsydra wouldāve been appropriate if it was like the 4th story, not the 2nd. maybe it could pass as the 3rd at the EARLIEST. And this is why if thereās a sequel to gnobook, itās going to be something different. clepsydra could be the 3rd or 4th, but it is nowhere near appropriate for a semi-direct sequel.
BASICALLY THEREāS A LOT OF REASONS.
Ddi you mean last day to order a signed copy of the work-previously-known-as-gnomon? If so where do we do this? (sorry if I'm late to the game; I've been off tumblr)
I do indeed mean that! And itās actually the work which continues to be known as gnomon, since i couldnāt think of another title, hah. Here be the link to the actual book preordering/purchasing spot:Ā https://www.dsppublications.com/books/gnomon-by-luchia-dertien-148-b
And Iām supposed to actually be like marketing it and stuff so IF YOU ORDER THE PAPERBACK THEN YOU GET THE EBOOK TOO, OH GOLLY GEE!!!!!!!
Howdy folks, this is the last reminder that this is the last day to order a signed copy. Hope you are having a good day!
this is going to sound dumb, but what does ao3-locked mean?
It means something is only accessible if you have an AO3 account, but Iām not doing that anymore because (a) Iām a whiny sulky baby who refuses to touch my AO3 account because Iām immature and pathetically fragile, and (b) I genuinely stopped giving a fuck because Iāve cycled around in my anxiety to absolute apathy. Iāve swooped around from almost vomiting 24/7 to completely numb and dead inside, and that just seems like a lot of work for something i no longer give a shit about. so! no more locking.
Just out of curiosity, what is the word count of your book? I'm always so interested in what manuscripts come out to at the end.
I think it came out to something like 83,000 words? I canāt remember exactly what gnofic was but I remember it was at in the 70k range. And I will cheerily admit that most of the additions are kinda unnecessary story-wise but hey, theyāre FUN! except one! one of them is definitely not fun! but theyāre mostly there to actually do characterization stuff for the rest of the crew and add a smidge more backstory and so on. Basically thereās stuff that is just mentionedĀ in the fic version that you actually get to know, and thereās one kinda-plothole that is now FIXED!!! Everythingās me-approved and I am brutally self-critical so itās definitely stuff Iām happy to include and therefore comparatively confident with and yes. Iāll stop now.
Hi, sorry to ask stupid questions here, but after August 16th, will there be any more opportunities for signed copies? Because I'm not going to have access to ordering books until around the thirtieth, I think, and I really really want a signed copy.
........I have no idea. Iām sitting here trying to think of a way that this could work out logistically but like this entire signing-books-thing part is happening this way (aka with the 8/16 deadline) so that I can sign the PAPERS and then they actually put the book together around those so I donāt get some ridiculously huge box full oā books to sign sent to my door. HOWEVER, if you really REALLY want a signed copy, we can probably find some way to work it out? idk. the easiest way by FAR would be if you could somehow find a way to order before the 16th. I could order it for you and then you pay me back later or something? This is a much more complicated situation than it should be. Sigh. Sorry about this, anon, I really wish I could just be like SUUURE JUST SEND IT MY WAY but...again, getting the book printed in Florida (...I think?), and then sent to me in Colorado, and then me sending it to you wherever you live could get complicated. And expensive. SO YEAH tbh the reimbursement method would be easiest by far for getting you a signed version, let me know your thoughts!
(Also this is in no way a stupid question, anon. Youāre a good person who just happens to be in a tricky situation so please donāt say that, you are lovely and this is a completely reasonable question.)
