it’s 3am, my throat is swollen, i can’t sleep, i’m stumbling around in the dark trying to make a bed on the couch so i don’t wake my darling spouse. in the shadow of a streetlamp i see what i think is cat vomit. i turn on my cell phone flashlight and it’s a s l u g

i feel like i’ve fallen down the rabbit hole. i trace the slime trail as far as i can. it winds around the leg of a shelf and...disappears. only about 6” of trail to find.

my head is spinning with possibility. did my cat do this? she’s never allowed outdoors. my dog has also been inside all day because i’m too exhausted to take her for a walk; we played inside today. baffled. confused. befuddled.

i look around the whole lower floor with my light before turning it off. no other fugitives tonight.

i lie awake and wonder...

It was a ‘last day of classes’ gift from my mom, cause I’m graduating soon. Don’t know if I’ll keep it there in the kitchen, even though that spot is empty and I’ve wanted to put a handing plant there for a long time. For now I’ll keep staring at it and decide another day.
