(side note: I've just read a lovely fic called Money For Old Rope which reminds me so much of your postgame rock-bottom twyrehound Peter comic, and the two now sit comfortably side by side in my brain. I love when art echoes.)

MONEY FOR OLD ROPE!!!! oh my god that's literally the fic that got me writing patho fic/comics xD it's been such an inspiration for me!! it really feels like a classic short story... The atmosphere is so present and cohesive and it's just so fucking sad while staying elegantly subtle. You can feel the decay in your bones. I've been chasing that balance since I read it.

Well. 'Giovanni's Room' (a really good book) is a somewhat superior, somewhat inferior version of (and directly inspired by, evidently) Genet's 'Our Lady Of The Flowers' (also a really good book). But this ruins the climax almost completely if you've read 'Our Lady.'

Baldwin's worst problem is how hard he tries not to look like a misogynist (by making the women into theatre characters) but this is a book from the year '56 and he sounds like a 2000s' writer. he's more overt about his (internalized) homophobia. But even though Genet is also somewhat of a misogynist, he's better at writing women and he can see the beauty in femininity that Baldwin was so disgusted and terrified by a decade later.
