Jade was raised as Grandpa's "granddaughter" even though she doesn't have any parents or other relations. For all intents and purposes, she is his daughter. Therefore, Jade and Dad are first cousins. This would then mean Jade and John are first cousins once removed.

I like this interpretation of their dynamic much better because it's not like they were ever raised as siblings. They were raised apart in separate parts of the world and their kinship was only revealed long after they had become friends, akin to someone finding out they have a long-lost cousin in a different country.
