Elijah remembered Freya telling him she had once been pregnant but he had been under the impression she had aborted the baby. “We knew our sister had been pregnant but the matter of the rest was unknown to me. At least the truth of it.” He turned to fully face the boy. “Well, welcome to the family Godfrey. It seems we are in need of a some sort of celebration. With your return and Henrik we should have a party. Or at least clean up the estate. It seems to have fallen into disrepair in our absence.”

“It was unknown to her as well, at least until a day ago.” Godfrey was happily surprised at how well both his family members have taken to his sudden emergence. From what he had heard of the Mikaelsons, they were slow to trust. Perhaps family was their one soft spot that they could always recognize. “Please, don’t host a party on my account. I wouldn’t want to trouble you.”

“Well, Mr. Matiason, you look good for a -” she paused for a minute, trying to do mental math in her head, “for a six hundred and four year old,” she laughed, knowing her math was probably way off. “So clearly wherever you’ve been chilling for the past centuries has good alcohol too. Either that or you have an awesome moisturiser. Where is it you’re from?” She laughed and took a swig of her beer.

Godfrey chuckled and resisted making a joke about blood. There was only so many truths he could give away before he ended up giving everything away. “Norway, but most recently Montreal, Canada. I travel a lot. How about you, Ms. Duckton? Where are you from and why New Orleans?”

There were not a lot of things that surprised Elijah these days but when the young man spoke his name Elijah was taken aback. “I’m sorry but how is that possible. I have never known a Godfrey. Unless there are more secrets our parents have been hiding, which would not surprise me in the least.” Given his parents and their family he did not doubt this man was who he said he was. He did look like a Mikaelson. that would explain why he seemed familiar. The family resemblance.

Godfrey chuckled. “No, I’m not a long-lost brother.” Gosh, he couldn’t imagine being an actual Mikaelson sibling. That was too heavy of a burden for a fun-loving man like himself to carry. “I don’t know how much Freya has told you about her past but she once had a son...” Godfrey had already revealed himself to his mother so he saw no harm in doing the same to his presumably nicer uncle. “Dahlia tossed him into the woods and made Freya believe that he was dead.” He watched Elijah and simply waited for the realization to sink in.

Penny laughed at his joke, “That was actually pretty funny, and I don’t say that a lot,” this guy seemed to share her sense of humor. “Mine was four hundred and forty-seven years ago, so we’re on the same page.” She teased along with him.

“It’s nice to meet you Godfrey Mathiason, I’m Penny Duckton…I’ve been here about two years, and I still haven’t seen half of what the city has to offer.”

Godfrey tilted his head to the side, amused by her willingness to joke about her age. He had always heard women were rather sensitive about that. “Well, Ms. Duckton, I have to say, you look fabulous for someone over five-hundred. There must be something in the beer here,” he teased, looking pointedly at her bottle.

Elijah laughed, “I have thought about it. I think I should present him with a bill for my services. What should the charge be for 1000 years of loyalty, muscle and guidance?” He loved his brother but he had a daughter now and maybe it was time for him to start thinking about living his own life.

“Probably more than he can afford.”

Unfortunately, Godfrey wasn’t even joking. He couldn’t imagine having someone so dedicated and loyal by his side. It was astounding how Elijah had managed to tolerate his brother for so long. Perhaps Godfrey didn’t know everything but from the many stories he’s heard about the Mikaelsons, Klaus was handful.

“I’m Godfrey Mathiason, by the way,” he stated, holding out his hand. “I’ve been hoping that I’d run into you, Elijah.”

She followed him, admiring his gentlemanly nature yet again, everyone was so polite lately to her. It was like she’d suddenly stepped into a Jane Austin novel and was surrounded by all these gorgeous, polite men who were genuine guys and not idiots just being themselves. They were nice people. “Whisky, ey? When was your 70th birthday?” She teased as she pulled out the bar stool.

“I’ll have beer please,” she smirked and asked the bartender sweetly, putting some of the cash on the counter.

“Five hundred and thirty-two years ago,” he stated, a playful grin on his face. Godfrey wasn’t much of a liar. It wasn’t really his fault if people didn’t believe him when he told the truth.

“Where are my manners? I haven’t introduced myself. I’m Godfrey Mathiason, first time visitor to this lovely city, and you are?”

Penny just laughed and took the money with a sigh, “Fine, but you have to let me get you a drink with it, that’s the deal.” She had the full intention of giving what would be left of the cash to someone on the street when she’d left the company of the man in front of her. He was adamant on her taking it, so she did. 

Godfrey grinned as the woman took the money. “You’ve got yourself a deal,” he stated, walking towards the door and opening it for her. “Ladies first.” If there was one thing he had learned about New Orleans, it was that the people here sure knew how to party. The poor woman must have been worked to death every night so he figured it would be nice to make her smile.

“I’m a whiskey kind of man, your pick on which, however,” he explained, taking a seat at the bar.

Elijah grinned, “Well yes. I suppose you might be right. But it makes those times I do show my humor all the better. No one ever expects it.” He looked over the stranger next to him. He looked familiar but Elijah couldn’t recall ever meeting him before. “I suppose I don’t have much experience in that department. Most of my life has been spent devoted to my brother.”

“So I’ve heard. Have you ever considered charging him for your baby-sitting services?” he joked. For some strange reason, he didn’t find the man as intimidating as everyone seemed to say he was. Maybe it was because he was his uncle, but it wasn’t like Elijah knew that. He could very well decide to rip his heart out at any time.

Penny smiled warmly at the man, she couldn’t believe he’d done that just because the guy had been a dick to her at the bar. She had been about to introduce herself properly when he whipped out the wad of cash. Her hands came up, pushing it away, “Oh my god, no…dude, honestly I’m flattered, nobody has ever defended me like that before - but I can’t take this. It’s too much. I don’t even know you, I can’t go around taking money from a stranger, albeit a really kind one.”

Godfrey chuckled but didn’t drop his hand. “It’s not my money, it’s his. Think of it as an extra generous tip for providing the extra service of dealing with his bullshit.” Unfortunately for Penny, Godfrey was as stubborn as they came so he probably wasn’t going to drop it until she took it. “Please, I insist. You’ll never get rid of me until you take it.”

“ I wouldn’t recommend.”  Katherine chuckled, remembering the last time they’d had a lovers’s spat, a poor hybrid was killed at the hands of Katherine and the following day, Elijah had sent her a gift wrapped heart. Things tended to go a little.. dark and intense with them. It was a strange bond they shared. 

“Alright then. I will never volunteer for that.” He pulled out his wallet and placed a few bills onto the counter. “Thank you for keeping me company, Ms. Pierce. I should probably get back to work and continue my search though.” Frankly, the longer he stuck around, the more likely Katherine was going to figure out what family he was searching for and he couldn’t run the risk of her knowing before anyone else. “I’ll see you around.”

Katherine almost choked on her drink “ Oh no, he is.” she smirked “ He has a knack for rubbing my past rendez-vous’s  in my face. Not that I don’t do the same– out of us two, I’m probably more jealous than him.” 

“I would really hate to be in a room with the two of you. I feel like I wouldn’t make it out alive,” he joked, though he genuinely feared for his life. He was going to meet his uncle eventually and suddenly this entire conversation was going to be ten times more awkward for him than it already was.

The look on his face made her chuckle even harder. Granted, she expected some sort of reaction– it wasn’t the look of horror that washed over his features as it she had hit him across the head with a baseball bat. “ Close your mouth, cupcake. You might catch a fly.”  she shook her head, still laughing “ Perhaps the bone structure a bit but that happens quite often with guys.” 

Godfrey couldn’t help but smile considering he managed to make the ice queen laugh. He didn’t really know whether or not to tell her the truth, however. He liked Katherine, despite her violent leanings, but he wasn’t sure he could trust her to keep his secret. He wasn’t ready to face his family yet so it was probably best to keep it hidden for now. “Well, I hope he’s not the jealous type.”

“They are not as heartless as people like to make them seem.” Freya nodded. “In the name of family, we have all our share of sins. Myself included. We are ruthless and cunning and vindictive and everything evil inbetween– it is the sort of bond and love that people do not understand. It runs deeper than our family feuds. We stick together.” she nodded “ Elijah is a good man who was forced to take some pretty radical decisions to protect our family. Out of all of us, him and Rebekah are the best at heart– although sometimes they do not show it. I care deeply for him.” 

The Mikaelsons’ loyalty to one another was renowned by now. Perhaps fortunately for him, he wasn’t a Mikaelson. “To be honest, I don’t really understand your bond with them. I don’t exactly have any siblings.” His words weren’t meant to hurt Freya, they were simply the truth. “But now that I’ve found you, you are my family, mother. We may not know each other but, if I stay and decide to help you, my loyalty is to you alone. You can send me away, if you wish, but I won’t let any harm come to you.”

While his original plan was to leave as soon as he could, he couldn’t abandon her knowing that she was in danger. Perhaps it was strange for him to commit himself so deeply to a woman whom he hardly knew, but he couldn’t really help himself. This woman was the person who gave birth to him and some part of him loved her without having to really know her. She was his family and perhaps the Mikaelson blood that ran through him was compelling him to treat her as such.

“ I do agree.” The brunette chuckled tucking a curl behind her ear. “ His name is Elijah– Original heartthrob, kind of a big deal around these parts so you might have heard of him.” 

Godfrey’s eyes widened when Katherine mentioned Elijah’s name and his mouth may have slightly dropped. The flirting was fun but now it was incredibly awkward at best. It wasn’t every day one ended up flirting with one’s uncle’s girlfriend. “Well, uh, yes, I’ve heard of him.” He ran his hand through his hair and chuckled, “In fact, some people say I am strikingly similar to him.”

“Aren’t they all? So vile and raw and brutal– tsk, the queen of hell approves.”  she chuckled. Katherine had always been a flirty vixen, it was part of her nature and something that seemed to set Elijah on fire every now and then. But this was just fun and games– she liked the vampire and found him rather refreshing– though, her heart was elsewhere. “Very. But don’t take my words lightly, they are true. Love always ends in heartbreak and even though we know it, we can’t help but take the risk. Those fleeting moments of happiness are sometimes worth it.” 

Godfrey chuckled. “It wouldn’t be so addictive if it weren’t painful in some ways, your grace.” Nevertheless, he took the advice to heart. Nothing was quite as raw and honest as a heart that had been crushed and molded a couple of times. His was relatively in tact, aside from that one story he offered. “So, may I ask, who is the lucky man?”

“So Prince Charming does have a dark, avenging side to himself!” Katherine taunted right back, patting his back in a playful manner “ The queen of hell sometimes enjoys a good story. Of whatever kind. – Whoever said that love was soft, had no idea what they were talking about. Love has teeth and claws and it bites. Some people never recover from it.” 

“I am a vampire after all. There’s a monster in me that you might actually find attractive, not that you’ll ever have the pleasure of witnessing him.” He knew she was taken but he couldn’t help but give into the flirtatious nature of their conversation. It was all innocent, however. “You sound like a woman scorned, your majesty.” Of course love was not all flowers and rainbows but those were dark, dark words to explain love.

Break her back– Freya laughed at that. It had been a smart way to cheer up the conversation. He was sharp, she could tell, and very kind. He’d taken that from his father– brave, too. “ Well, I will have to introduce you to the family. If you want to, of course. Though, I must warn you– Niklaus can be quite.. short tempered. Elijah will be very fond of you, though. ” 

“I can’t wait to meet them. I’ve heard a lot about them over the centuries. I can’t say they have been good things though.” Most of the stories were spoken with anger or fear so Godfrey wasn’t expecting much. Nevertheless, they were his family and Freya seemed determined to stick by their side. If he wanted to spend time with her, he would have to eventually meet the rest of the Mikaelsons. “Believe it or not, people have compared me to Elijah. I’ve never known whether to find offense to that or not though, perhaps you can tell me?”
