And yet Darcy never played with Lizzie's heart, never belittled her and her character (he had beef with her family but not her), didn't drive a wedge between her and her sister. I love Anthony Bridgerton and the whole series but excuse me, he will never be Darcy. Anthony was a womaniser rake turned into a loving husband, Darcy actually cared for women and their education.

Okay, so Darcy is convinced that Jane doesn't like Bingley. Maybe it's because unlike "Holding up a neon sign saying Marry Me" Caroline, Jane is modest and proper. Maybe it's because Darcy sees what he wants to see. But honestly, it was always a rigged game and Jane was never going to win.

Show too much interest: coquette. Show too little interest: cold hearted. Try to needle a guy because he annoys you? That will be taken as flirtation. Refuse a guy to his face repeatedly? You can't be serious.

There never was a right answer or a right way to behave and Jane Austen knew it.
