Hi, I was scrolling through tumblr and stumbled acrossed and fell in love instantly with your blog. It's wonderful and I haven't seen any that talks about A Little Life like you! 😻

And I have a question for you, I don't know if you've talked about this before... What character from A Little Life do you relate to most? I personally see pieces of myself in all 4 of them (Jude, Willem, JB and Malcolm) and I'm curious about you :)

i agree with you, at times i see myself in all of them; i relate to jude how i encourage and am drawn to vulnerability and yet am repelled by it in me, i understand willem because i also “am a forest fire and i am the fire and i am the forest and i am the witness watching it”, i cower and ache like jb in the way a kid does as they slide a note that reads “im sorry” in the crack between the floor and the locked door in front of them, i see malcolm because i too have so many questions and the more i question ! the more questions i have ! and even when i have answers they seem to be fill in the blank guesses who no one can tell me whether they are correct or not.

but who do i relate to the most? i fear that’s very much split between willem and jude. when i first read a little life, jude voiced thoughts and feelings i wasn’t aware i had but had felt my entire life. jude is my mind, and he is my body (me and jude 🤝 denying we are disabled even when we are on the floor). willem is my heart and…. soul? he is a protecter who hesitates, wanting so desperately to show love but fear that you are not enough is the epitome of growing up as a glass child. it’s a mold i worry i’ll never break free from, and one that willem bravely does.

willem who wears sweaters and is described as looking most comfortable around trees and streams, a coffee lover, someone who buys matching scarfs for him and his lover, who believes that home is not a place but a person. he is the epitome of coziness, christmas belongs to him

💌 you mean…. my favorite pastime is encouraged? i wanted to give a long list but i would also like to post this before bed so it arrives to you sooner!! i hope these can suffice for now 🫶

-even after jacob passed he still had the child-like hope that he would never have to live without his parents, and when they passed as well, he resolved to always show love and to hold on to every person for as long as he possibly could

-he continued to publish books, unlike the ones previous, the acknowledgments now referenced a son

-has what julia would describe as a giddy ‘i made jude laugh’ smile

-is the first person to grab a blanket to lay over the person who’s fallen asleep on the couch

-harold is a diehard dessert lover to his core

-phone calls are his favorite thing, his calls with willem are the ones he secretly treasures the most

-he finds it impossible to throw away anything of sentimental value

-has the opinion that candy corn is the worst part of halloween, he believes that people who eat it (andy, willem) are genuinely insane. each october julia buys some for guests, and each october harold complains

-following the adoption harold would use any excuse to talk about jude just so he could refer to him as his son in conversation

Headcannons for Jude?

💌 oh my, where do i even begin? honestly, i think i’ll make a full post later on but for now i’ll share a little list 🤍

-jude is the best gift giver in his social circle

-at night he thinks of the people he loves, but it’s imagining universes where his life is different that helps him to fall asleep

-his love languages are quality time, and physical touch (to his demise)

-jude is the type of friend that feels like “home”

-he is weary of people who are incredibly religious, and he scolds himself for it

-records are always playing softly on the nights he cooks, or while he completes chores on his days off

-he believes genuinely in promises

-jude takes pride in being a morning person

-he always brings his friends their favorite little things or things they would like, pastries, drinks, flowers, books, fragrances

-if he misses one of his walks he begins to crave them and is perpetually cranky until he gets the chance to go

What do you think Jude's ethnicity/racial background is? Personally, I think of him as Indigenous, possibly the Sioux tribe from South Dakota (where he was born), but I'd love to hear what you think

💌 i adore you for asking me this and at the same time im at a loss. jude’s background is incredibly undermined, and frankly ignored in the book. i believe we only have a few descriptions of his physical traits, and everything else is focused on this “singular” beauty. jude’s interest in his ethnicity is practically obsolete for us as readers and there are no details that explore how his background contributes to his everyday life. we have characters of various racial backgrounds in the book, some that are explored in specific details, and not once is there any semblance of likeness or jude seeing himself in others (even coworkers? friends of friends? strangers??). that being said, i believe thinking of jude as indigenous is a perspective i wholeheartedly agree with. in truth i have no prior knowledge of the sioux tribe, but jude is a stunning person and it’s a shame that such a significant thing is disregarded just to single him out.

You made a post back in Feb about little anecdotes from A Little Life and one of them was that Willem once shoved Jude out of the way of an oncoming bike. Do you recall what scene that might have been in? Because I'm trying to find wherever thats mentioned and I cant
