End the Drought

Hello! We're trying to help inform people on the California drought and its effects so that you can minimize your participation in it.

Here at at H2no we provide you with the tools and knowledge you need to make a difference. But there comes a time when you need to put your knowledge to the test, so we are asking you to TAKE ACTION. For real, you know what to do now to help end the drought, so go out there and do it! And while your at it attempt to inspire others to make a difference, be your own catalyst for change. The Drought is a huge problem, and we know it seems as though one person can’t change that, but you would be surprised how many people you influence. And this is a relevant cause, it’s our water and it’s our fault we don’t have enough. The first step is realization, then awareness and finally to spread your awareness. Don’t wait for the problem to get worse be the answer, take action and do your part in the drought relief. We just want to say thank you as well, because without you guys listening we wouldn’t be doing our part. And remember no matter how small you are you can make a huge difference.

Take Action: Dishwashers and Washing Machines

We understand keeping a clean household is important to you guys. But you would be amazed about how much water you waste using some of your appliances like dishwashers and washing machines. Often when you do run a load of dishes or laundry it isn’t completely full, meaning any remaining water is being completely wasted. We aren’t asking you to get rid of these appliances, just being aware of the efficiency of your loads. Don’t run a load of laundry with 3 shirts, or a dishwasher with a few forks and a bowl. Not only will this save water, but your water bill will go down a whole bunch, when you cut out the unnecessary water usage. They also design certain appliances that are water conserving if you feel that making your loads bigger would be an issue. Most of the ways to take action we suggest are so simple and easy, and only have a small impact on your lifestyle.

Take Action: Pools, Jacuzzi’s and Fountains

Ok, we get it, summer is coming up and sometimes you just want to jump in the pool, but the amount of water being wasted by filling up your pool every week is a huge reason we are in a drought. Pools, Jacuzzi’s and things like fountains, although look pretty and are fun to play with are a huge waste of water. Gallons and gallons of water are being wasted on something that you use maybe 3 times a month. And we’re sure that your landscaping won’t take a huge hit if you don’t refill your fountain. In fact this has actually become a trend in many communities. Because of the drought and the clear lack of water, towns are draining pools and fountains to do their part in the fight against the drought. I know this may sound harsh but these changes will benefit you and your community in the long run. And for those of you who do live on California, possibly near the coast, Just go in the Ocean! You should have no need for a pool when the big blue is out there waiting for you.

Take Action: Your Shower

A great way to take action against the drought is your shower. We know a long shower is a much needed time for relaxation, but by spending hours in the shower wastes tons of water! When you think about it during that hour long shower you took, the actual washing of your body only took about 5-10 minutes. If everyone just got in the shower and only spent their time ACTUALLY TAKING A SHOWER! Then the amount of water saved would be tremendous. So here’s what we at H2No are asking of you, try a 5 minute power shower instead of that water wasting 40 minute shower. We promise that you will be thanking us later, and so will your towns water supply! Another way to save water in the shower is using a low flow shower head. These shower heads are designed to pump are with your water, giving you the same great water pressure but with less water being used!

Take Action: Your Faucets

You would really think that a tiny leak in your faucet could lead to the drought but you’d be surprised! Faucets area huge contributor to the drought. The thing is people forget about faucets, when you use it, it doesn’t exactly seem like a boat load of water. However, overtime the length of time you leave your faucet running can make a very large impact on your wasted water. Just take a moment to think about whether or not you leave the faucet running while brushing your teeth....or washing the dishes. Odds are you probably do leave it on, and even if you don’t, if there is a leak then you are also wasting water! Make it a monthly inspection to check for leaks, and if you are going to brush your teeth or wash the dishes be aware of your water consumption and only use the absolute necessary amount. Another tip, if you can’t fix the leak in your sink, or other area, place something to collect the water under it, once that is full you can use that to water your plants!

Take Action: Landscaping

So much of our water is wasted on landscaping, the upkeep of yards, etc. And most sprinkler systems have leaks that don’t even provide water for your plants! A simple way to take action against the drought is to turn off your sprinklers. Make some changes to your garden. By planting drought resistant plants and replacing your grass with something like stones your can save tons of water! We aren’t saying you have to go rip up all your grass right now and replace it, but just be aware of the water you are wasting on your plants. Going gold isn’t a bad thing. You’re probably wondering what we mean by going gold, it’s simple, but letting your lawn turn yellow you are saving water...but don’t worry everyones doing it! In fact the company Water Wise makes signs you can put on your lawn that list all the benefits of going gold. The drought isn’t going to end all at once, but if we each make small changes like this it can make a huge impact.

About Us

We probably should have made this our first post but here we are. Our final this year was to create an awareness campaign about an important topic regarding society today. So being that the drought in California is a huge problem right now, we figured that was a perfect topic. And thus H2No was born. Our mission at H2No is to raise awareness of the drought as well and spread ideas and changes we can make to our daily routines to save water. California is so lucky to even have drinking water, some places don’t even have clean water. But the problem is, no one is aware of the true gift that water is. We waste gallons of water on pointless things like; hour long showers, leaving the water running while doing dishes/brushing your teeth, and so much more. This amazing gift we have been given is almost gone. The reason for everyone’s lack of awareness is simply that people who hear about the drought don’t think it’s affecting them. I mean if water is still coming out of their faucets, how bad could the drought really be. But it’s because people are ignoring the drought that makes the issue even worse. So, through social media and other platforms we hope to raise awareness and encourage people to take action against the drought. Water is much too precious to waste.

The Drought is Real

A lot of people ignore the drought because they think it doesn’t affect them. But the reality is it does, if everyone waits until the last minute to take action there won’t be ant water left! California’s drought is continuing to get worse, but if everyone just slightly changes the way the use water it can make a huge impact. So much of our water is wasted on landscaping and irrigation systems, most of which have leaks and end up wasting the water. Running water is also very responsible for the increase in  water consumption. Think about every time you have to wait for your shower to warm up, or your dish water. All that water is being wasted. Many countries don’t even have clean water, and we who have the privilege of clean useable water aren’t even conserving it. We need to realize the value water has and how our actions are depleting it. So do us a favor, H2No’s goal is to raise awareness of the drought and what we can do to prevent any further damage. We need to stop ignoring the drought before it’s too late.
