GRAPH READING GUIDE:
The Luigi Mangione to Alice Weidel axis shows the scale to which one is removed from / entrenched in Vatican politics.
Luigi Mangione is the suspected killer of the United Healthcare CEO. He has been lauded as a folk hero because of his radical action. Make note that his presence on the scale is NOT representative of his political beliefs or a judgement of his morality, but rather symbolizes an unexpected external catalyst of change.
Alice Weidel is the co-chairwoman of the German AfD party, which is on the far-right end of the political spectrum. The AfD is anti-immigration and anti-gay marriage; Alice Weidel is married to a woman of Sri Lankan origin. Alice Weidel's presence on this scale is symbolic of reactionary politicking, often at the detriment of the self.
Individuals on the Alice Weidel end of the scale (cough cough Tedesco) may pursue radical and/or hypocritical courses of action (cough cough returning to Latin mass even though his Latin reportedly sucks ass).
Individuals on the Luigi Mangione end of the scale take actions that actively challenge or even dismantle established Vatican tradition (ex: Lawrence publicly circulating the simony receipts). Benitez is on the Luigi Mangione end of the scale because although he technically should not be on the scale at all (he's a Jesus allegory--in the movie--after all, untouchable by the dirt of humankind), if I HAD to choose a side to put him on, it wouldn't be the Alice Weidel side.
After several hours of careful debate, my friend and I came to the conclusion that (movie vers.) Aldo Bellini, being a direct symbol of the failures of American liberalism due to the party's political inaction and functional conservatism, should have two appearances on the graph. One version is who he believes he should be (a champion of progressive values in the catholic church), and the other is the sum of his actions and their impacts (considerably less radical than he might posit). Although Aldo is about as liberal as a Cardinal can get, he does not have the same functional impact as, say, Vincent Benitez does, because of his preoccupation with preserving respectability and adhering to longstanding Church tradition.
I think that there is an astonishing lack of fics about Benítez's past in the Congo, Baghdad and Kabul, etc, or even with heavy emphasis on them. Or I just accidentaly scrolled past. So if anyone has any recommendations, I'm all ears lol
