“I never knew Heaven could be so loud… or look like this.”
Barry was about to tell the girl that she was in fact not dead, and that he had saved her all by himself. However, the retort seemed to freeze on his lips as the stranger began to sob earnestly into her hands, silky golden locks falling around her face as she sniffled. Barry started towards the girl cautiously as she cried out softly for her ‘papa’, but her gaze hardened almost instantly as she scooted away from the peasant with surprising speed.
“Please tell me… you’re not one of the bandits.”
Barry’s heart fell as he suddenly realized the ordeal that the girl had been through. The outskirts of the Camphrier Kingdom were marked with dilapidated roads and pathways that sprouted from the city. Vicious robbers often lined these thoroughfares, looking to pick off passing nobility as they passed through on business or leisure. Barry’s eyebrows furrowed as the girl accused him of being one of those vagrants, wondering how the poor noblewoman had traveled this far in the bitter cold. She looked up and wiped the tears from her watery eyes and just stared at the blonde boy. She looked at her surroundings again; it was a drastic change from her porcelain castle with crystal glass windows and marble floors. It was very… brown, with thin layering of fur and leather on each piece of furniture. Lamp burners lay on each corner of the room. As the boy explained himself, she tilted her head and caught his name.
“Bareth? Barry…” The word was very soft on her lips as she said it to herself so she could remember. She laughed at the title he gave himself, a laugh escaped from her chest. “Brave? You don’t look brave to me. You’re not big and strong like the warriors who guard my castle---“ A screech followed as he said he didn’t know of her existence. She stood up straight and leaned over to him, lifting a finger up and wagging it in his face.
“I’m Princess Charlotte Hepburn! I live in Parfum Palace! I am a relative of the Great King of Kalos! The one and only of course.” She crossed her arms and turned her head away from him. “Is this place so small and dingy that it doesn’t know the people who rule it?!” Maybe she shouldn’t throw a fit at the person who had just saved her life; however, he should have known that he saved an important life at least.
But her voice lowered, her back to him and her eyes still on the wall. She tightened her grip on the fur sheets that blanketed her body. “You… You will really help me find my dad?”
