thinking about chara's thought process from the newsletter and how it applies to genocide. what particularly stands out to me is "nothing can hurt anyone anymore.", which is very much not what comes to mind for the genocide route—at least for your actions. chara very much strikes me as an 'ends justify the means' type of person, and you can see it during their lifetime with the buttercup poisoning plan. they were fully willing to hurt themself, hurt everyone in their town for the final result; that being the freedom of monsterkind. if they have to cause hurt to obtain that, then so be it.

and i feel their thought process is similar throughout genocide. they don't actively go out of the way to maximise the amount of pain they cause. they simply function as your assistant, ensuring you carry this out efficiently. their final action, regardless of your input? reaching absolute. which they previously described as a state where "nothing can hurt anyone anymore." and it still holds true, in a way. by ending the world now, putting monsterkind out of their misery, nothing can hurt them anymore. there's no reason to actively seek out survivors, monsterkind is already unlikely to survive in the long run regardless. it'd just be pouring salt in the wound. chara themself knows fully well what it's like to die a slow, painful death.

to chara, this is a form of mercy. you can't be hurt in a world where you no longer exist. if you can no longer be hurt, you're essentially invincible. nothing can hurt anyone anymore, and that's exactly what they wanted. if they have to cause hurt to obtain that, then so be it.

(i feel you can apply this to soulless pacifist too, if you take chara to have killed everyone. aside from administering the consequences of your actions, which i do consider to be their main motivation—in their eyes, this is a fragile world where anyone can be hurt. they can't accept such a world after having already obtained that idealized "absolute" that they longed for. they have to set it right once more.)

the reason the narration is like that in tem shop is just because of chara being excited at the prospect of farming gold. chara includes gold in the list of stats they embody, which you can increase in every route, therefore meaning chara is your partner in the quest of selling cloudy glasses over and over and in this essay i

what do you mean there's unused echo flower dialogue for room 9999 and i'm finding out about this 9 years later from a twitter post. excuse me. the flowers. and the mountain. and the number 9. all of which are associated with chara. and then "i just want everyone to be happy" paired with all of that? ok. let me spend my entire evening processing that i guess. sure.

something something about asgore clinging onto memories of his family, constantly wishing for a chance to see them again, yet failing to see them for who they are at present. he mentions how frisk reminds him of chara in the neutral route, yet doesn't notice chara in the genocide route. he mentions wanting to see asriel again, yet fails to recognise him in the same route as well. he mentions how he and toriel will take care of frisk without taking into consideration if toriel is even alive, and even in the true pacifist route, asks her if they can be friends failing to consider how she's feeling at the moment.

something something about flowey taking this same form of clinginess towards the past and unwillingness to accept the present to it's most extreme form via outright keeping people stuck in place through saving and resetting, not allowing them to grow on their own terms, and how his final goal as the god of hyperdeath is to reset everything back to 0. he similarly tries to use frisk as a substitute for chara as well, also taking that to its most extreme by pretending that it actually is chara. something something like father like son something something.

I'm really curious, ut fans that grew up with undertale (or anyone who became a fan years ago), who was your favorite(s) when you first discovered undertale and who is your favorite now?

it used to be toriel back when i first discovered undertale as a kid, the dreemurrs are still my favorites so she hasn't really moved from her place. if i had to choose one favorite at present though then probably chara.

something something about how chara went to mount ebott with the intention to die likely prompted by the same reasons that lead to their hatred of humanity yet when they do actually die later on it's promoted by their love for their family instead. both times, the intended outcome leads to their death, just with different feelings leading up to that decision.

i put my favorite food for the newsletter as buttercups back in 2022 as a joke so now everytime i go to check the 9th anniversary newsletter i'm being haunted by chara.

thinking about how both chara and flowey fixate on different aspects of their deaths. to flowey, he died because he was unable to kill. he was put in a kill-or-be-killed situation and was unable to bring himself to do what's necessary, and now that dictates his entire outlook on life. the very first person you meet in the game is flowey, who uses you to reinforce this exact mindset of his. to put anyone in the same pain he was once in as a way to rationalise what happened as just the way the world works rather than it being the cruel tragedy it was. that the very idea of being trusting and merciful was in itself idiotic. he chooses to repeat what he went through, over and over, but this time as the one teaching others the same "kill or be killed" mentality instead, with the same cruelty and brutality he was subject to throughout.

to chara, they died because they surrendered their soul—and so, their control. they trusted asriel as a partner in their plan, thus giving him control, and so they both had to suffer the consequences as a result. they died because they weren't in control. so, when meeting you at the end of the game, they're sure to take as much control as they can get. they're the one telling you to give up your soul this time, they're the one administering the consequences of your actions this time, and if you try to act against their choice—they're the one in control this time, and they'll be sure to let you know exactly how little control you hold. you're the one who has to sit back and watch as the person who seemingly functioned as your partner in crime rips away your happy ending, because this time, you're the one who surrendered your soul to them.

something something about how if you choose to go by the narrator chara theory it'd heavily imply that chara idolizes undyne and even without that undyne embodies several of chara's traits. the association with the number 9 as undying throughout her stats, taking things to their most extreme during her hangout which lead to her house burning down, her hatred of humanity, her closeness with asgore, etcetera. meanwhile flowey's favorite character is papyrus who also shares several traits with asriel. namely their unwillingness to kill and their desire to impress their best friend to the point they'd set aside their own feelings, for example: the grillby's phone call with both undyne and papyrus.

something something about how undyne and chara are both devoted to the freedom of monsterkind via the extermination of humanity but whereas chara's plan to free monsterkind heavily centered around asriel yet still failed to take the idea that asriel just didn't have it in him to kill into consideration, undyne tries her best to distance papyrus from her plans regardless of both his insistence and his power due to knowing he wouldn't be able to bring himself to kill someone even in a kill-or-be-killed situation. something something about how undyne is a grown adult whereas chara was an extremely young and troubled child. something something about how things could've turned out better if only chara were more mature and in the right state of mind.

(i really have to wonder what chara themself would think when hearing all that from undyne, especially as it only happens in a pacifist run and they'd likely already have had several of their outlooks challenged at that point via frisk. i wonder how it would feel to hear a situation so incredibly similar from someone who is so similar to you, yet made such a different decision and seeing how much better things could've turned out if you were just more thoughtful of your closest friend. if you were just a little more mature.)
