Sebastian Stan attends the 26th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party sponsored by Bulgari, celebrating EJAF and the 90th Academy Awards at The City of West Hollywood Park on March 4, 2018 in West Hollywood, California. (Source: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images North America)
The Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku—literally translated as “forest bathing”—is based on a simple premise: immerse yourself in the forest, absorb its sights, sounds, and smells, and you will reap numerous psychological and physiological benefits. “Nature heals me with a mysterious power,” the photographer Yoshinori Mizutani recently said. Born in the countryside, surrounded by mountains, Mizutani told me that shinrin-yoku has always been a part of his daily life. In Tokyo, where he now lives and works, he takes his camera to the city’s parks and engages in a kind of photographic forest-bathing practice. In a new series of kaleidoscopic images created for us, his communion with nature starts at an almost cellular level.

Watching the Total Solar Eclipse with Photographer @dave.krugman
To see more of Dave’s images, follow @dave.krugman on Instagram.
Today’s #SolarEclipse traced its path of totality — the geographic line along which the sun is entirely blocked from view by the moon — across the United States, from the woods of Oregon to the fields of South Carolina. Its rarity inspired millions to turn their eyes and lenses skyward, including New York-based photographer Dave Krugman (@dave.krugman), who made a trek to Nashville, Tennessee, to see this first total solar eclipse in the US in 38 years. “This was a flashpoint moment I didn’t want to miss,” says Dave. “Seeing the sky go dark and a ring of fire suddenly appear was an extraordinary experience. The light was eerie, otherworldly. It’s surely a moment I’ll never forget.”
Charlottesville, U.S.A.
Like you, we were sickened by the violence perpetrated by white supremacists against their fellow Americans this weekend, and alarmed by the rising tide of intolerance in the wake of last year’s election.
If you’re feeling helpless, we understand. These are scary times. But there’s plenty you can do to push back against this evil, and to support those who are threatened by it.
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights will be organizing responses to these white supremacist demonstrations. You can be a part of that response.
Of course, there’s the larger issue of criminal justice reform in a system tilted against people of color. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund is leading the charge there.
And then there’s the even larger issue of empowering the next generation of people of color. The My Brother’s Keeper Alliance and Black Girls Code are doing excellent work, and you can help support it.
Finally, there’s the humble social networking platform you’re using right now. Vital conversations about race and social justice are happening across Tumblr. They need your voice—and they need you to boost the voices of those who might not be heard. You have the power of the reblog. Use it.
Love you, Tumblr. Stay strong and stay safe.
Conquering Canadian Cold with Style Blogger @misslionhunter
This story is part of #🇨🇦 ❤, a new series celebrating people all across Canada.
When she first arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from Harare, Zimbabwe, as a student 16 years ago, Musemo Handahu (@misslionhunter) couldn’t believe the temperatures she encountered. “Each winter, I ask myself why I’m in this cold country,” says Musemo, a writer and style blogger who goes by Mo. “But secretly, I love the challenge of walking downhill after a snowstorm.” And Mo will never tire of Halifax’s harbor views: “Zimbabwe is a landlocked country. Each morning I still get giddy about the smell of the water and seeing cargo ships.” Mo describes Canadians as kind to the core, especially when it comes to immigrants. “Moving to a new country is daunting, but it is made a lot better when you are welcomed with compassion,” she says.
Since building her life in Canada, Mo has dedicated more and more time to her blog. “It’s always been a place where I share a piece of myself with my internet family,” she says. “I dream of creating a bigger platform that connects Africans and shares stories of our contributions to the world.”
Meet Trench and Maple, a Human-Dog Dynamic Musical Duo
To hear some of Trench and Maple’s favorite tunes, follow @acoustictrench on Instagram.
Since Trench (@acoustictrench) was a boy growing up in New England, he’s always been drawn to music. “One of my earliest memories is playing the air guitar in the kitchen when the Beach Boys came on the radio,” he says. Fast forward 20 years, and Trench plays as many instruments — from the guitar to the ukulele, harp to cello — and has an unlikely musical partner: his dog, Maple.
“I adopted her from a rescue shelter when she was a puppy,” says Trench, “And since then, she follows me everywhere. Whenever I play the guitar, she comes over and curls up next to me. I think the music comforts her.” As Trench began recording videos of himself playing, Maple naturally appeared in the background. “She’s essentially become the face of my music,” he says. Maple even joins in on the jam sessions once in a while, tapping on a drum or a tambourine. “She’s so smart and she picks up things really fast,” says Trench. “So I always have fun with her and see if she can join in.”

Turning Heads at the Kentucky Derby with @thehatgirls
To see more of their wild designs, follow Rachel and Kate (aka @thehatgirls) on Instagram.
No request is too outlandish for Rachel Bell and Kate Welsh (@thehatgirls). “We do a lot of unorthodox, unconventional materials,” says Rachel. “We’ve made hats out of hair before. We’ve made hats out of tree branches.” Constructing their own Lady Gaga-esque hats started as a hobby, but after turning heads for several years, the two turned their passion into a business. Depending on how unique the request, creating a one-of-a-kind headpiece takes anywhere from five to 24 hours to put together. This year for the Kentucky Derby (@kentuckyderby), the pair will fulfill about 150 custom orders. “The most important part of the Derby is the fashion,” Rachel says. “No woman wants to see their hat on somebody else!”
Congratulations to Evan and Sarah, now the Ballards, on their beautiful wedding! I'm so proud of you two and wish you all the best as you begin your next chapter of life together! #TheBallardBeginning (at Cloudland Station)
Thanks to everyone who nominated me for the glass flame award. Serving is an honor and privilege. I've been served and led by great people who make it easy for me to do the same. This has touched and challenged me! Thanks!
