Five Tips on Buying a Golf Cart Windshield

Want to add more style and protection from the elements to your golf cart? Buy a windshield for your cart, and you’ll never have to deal with flying debris again. Here are five tips on choosing a golf cart windshield:

1. Find the right fit for your model of golf cart.

To choose the right windshield, you’ll need some important information about your cart. Do you remember the year it was manufactured? If you don’t, grab your owner’s manual to find that out. You’ll also need to know the make and model. The size of your roof will also dictate your choice of windshield. Measure your vehicle’s top to see whether it is long (80 inches) or standard (54 inches).

The process is a lot easier if you have an E-Z-GO. You can use the manufacturer’s handy lookup tool to find the serial number of your vehicle, as well as model, make, and date of manufacture. After you have found out that information, simply browse through E-Z-GO’s online catalog, using My Vehicle to find the right windshield.

2. Buy only from the vehicle’s original equipment manufacturer.

Sometimes golf cart owners try to save a few bucks by buying aftermarket equipment. DIY Golf Cart Maintenance--Some Safety Tips

If you own a golf cart and love to work on vehicles, you might want to start doing some of the routine maintenance work on your own cart. Here are some tips to keep you safe while you work on your golf cart.

Keep your workshop well-lit, organized, and clean. Make sure that you can see well with plenty of task lighting so you can easily see what you’re working on. Remove clutter so you can move around freely. You don’t want to trip on a tool you left on the floor a month ago. Also, clean your workspace after you finish. Mop up any toxic fluids and dispose of them properly afterwards.

Organize your workbench and tool box. If everything is stored in its place, you will not have to rush at the last minute to find a tool. Keep everything where you can find it easily.

Ventilate your workspace. If you have adequate air exchange (most safety experts advise more than five exchanges each hour), you can reduce your inhalation of toxic gases. Gasoline, paints, and solvents have vapors that are dangerous to breathe. You may also want to get a special mask that filters out these vapors.

Store air line inflators off the ground. Hoses should be hung up instead to avoid a tripping hazard. On the floor, they may also pick up residue from spilled liquids. If the liquids are corrosive, it may ruin the hoses. Also, if you leave them on the floor, someone may trip over them.

Have a designated space to keep flammable liquids. Keep flammable substances at a distance from your workspace. One stray spark could wreak disaster.

Keep safety equipment nearby. Your workshop should be stocked with plenty of safety equipment. At the very least, you should have protective goggles, safety shoes, sturdy jacks and jack stands, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, and an apron to protect you from battery acid spills. If you work a lot with paint and solvents, consider getting a mask that filters out the toxins from their vapors.

Take your cell phone to your workshop. No matter how careful you are, accidents do happen. Be prepared to call 911 if you have an emergency.

Read the manufacturer’s user manuals. Be sure you understand the directions before you start working on your golf cart. The user manuals usually contain pictures. If you’re a visual learner, be sure to look those over carefully before you begin. Pay particular attention to any warnings. 

Know what you’re doing with the tools you’ll need. Read the toolmaker’s instructions carefully if you have never used the tool. Have all of the tools that you’ll need for the job assembled beforehand in the order you’ll need them to complete the task.

Don’t take chances. If you leave out an essential step to save time, it might cost you down the road. Repair your golf cart the correct way to make sure you have a safe vehicle to drive.

Should I Register My Golf Cart Trailer With the DMV?

Golf cart cargo trailers, like any other vehicles, are subject to your state’s motorvehicle laws. Most states require any trailers to have their own registration papers, separate from the vehicle that tows them. There are some states, however, that offer exceptions.  

Generally, Trailers Need Their Own Permit

In general, most trailers, including golf cart cargo trailers, must be registered with their state department of motor vehicles (DMV). In most cases, the trailer, as well as the vehicle that tows it, needs to be inspected regularly to ensure that it is safe to be out on the roads. There are some rare exceptions to this rule.

Oregon trailers can avoid the registration process if they meet two criteria: 1) The trailer must have pneumatic tires manufactured from elastic materials. 2) The trailer must not tow in excess of 1800 pounds.   West Virginia trailers can forego the registration process if their owners use them as farm equipment. There is, however, a catch. If your trailer earns such an exemption, you must never tow it over 35 miles from home. That might put a damper on some of your favorite golfing activities.  

In South Carolina, on the other hand, your golf cart, too, must have registration papers from the state’s DMV.

Watch Out for Tricky Wording in Trailer Statutes

As you can see, there are strict requirements to which your trailer must meet in order to forego the registration process. The wording in many of these laws can get downright tricky, since definitions vary from state to state.

If in Doubt, Ask

If you cannot decide whether or not your golf cart trailer needs to be registered with your state, call your state’s DMV. Ask them specific questions about your trailer so the answers you receive will apply to your specific situation.

In many cases, it will be best if you purchase registration for your trailer. Best Tire Types: What which type is best for certain terrains?

Many people use golf carts for a lot more than just getting around on the golf course. If you purchase standard tires for your golf cart, they may not serve the purpose for the tasks you have in mind for your golf cart. Standard tires, after all, are engineered to get you from place to place on a carefully-manicured golf course without putting tire tracks on the greens. If you plan to use your golf cart for other things than tooling around the golf course, read the following tips to help you make the right choice of tires for your cart.

Choosing Tires for Use in Sandy Areas

To negotiate sandy surfaces without incident, you’ll need tall, wide tires with bars or paddles across the tire’s surface. Such a design will give you better traction on sand. The wide tires will keep you from sinking into the moveable, soft surface.

Choosing Tires for Use in Muddy Areas

If you have a lot of mud where you plan to use your golf cart, look for tires that have a directional tread pattern. Such a pattern will allow the tire to get a grip, even while going through the slippery mud. These tires must be mounted with the tread facing the same direction. Many of these tires can only be used on one side of your golf cart. Know before you buy so you can ask for “side-dependent” tires when it comes time to replace them.

Choosing Tires for Use on Paved Surfaces

For golf carts that you plan to use on paved surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete, choose a tire that has a tread pattern similar to the tires on an automobile. Make sure that the tire is constructed from durable materials, since roads and sidewalks put heavy wear on most tires.

Choosing Tires for the Golf Course

Standard tires for golf carts are smooth, with just enough grip to take you from green to green without damaging the turf.  

Choosing Tires for Use on Snowy Surfaces

If you plan to use your golf carts to get around in areas packed with snow, you’ll need tires with a directional tread. Some of them, like sand tires, will have paddles, while others have knobs to help gain traction in the slippery, cold snow. Snow tires should work well on the surface beneath the snow. If the snow sits on top of paved surfaces, you need a tire that also works well on concrete and asphalt. If the surface is muddy underneath, you need a tire that also functions well in muddy conditions.

If you plan to use your golf cart on a variety of surfaces, you may want to choose an all-terrain tire for the best overall performance. On the other hand, if some of the conditions will be extreme, you may consider purchasing a set of tires for each type of terrain that your cart will encounter.
