Toast | 2737 Broadway (Broadway between 104th and 105th streets)
They call it Toast downtown, but it’s barely. A restaurant that boasts great sandwiches and burgers for less-than-$10 (and yes, it’s sit-down), its sister location is just 20 streets up. I went that location last summer with two friends from college and two alumni in the city. I remember it being a misplaced dinner at best. I just didn’t feel at ease for whatever reason.
Toast is slowly redeeming itself from that standard as I often suggest the “downtown” location to friends looking for a good, cheap eat by my apartment. But at the start, it was the scene of many tense conversations — I had two particularly dramatic dinners there with my friend from Brooklyn. We’d sit at the dimly lit table and somehow between the heated words, I’d break out laughing. “This is ridiculous, isn’t it?”
Oh, it was. But there was nothing ridiculous about the quality of food and prices. Munching on a $8.95 mozzarella, basil, tomato and red pepper sandwich, I couldn’t believe how good, filling and lovely the meal was. I took friends after a Memorial Day picnic; I went two nights ago with a high school friend visiting. The meals have gotten lighter emotionally, but the quality has remained consistently high throughout. Cheers to redemption and the positive power of time and change. Drama may come and go, but good food stays … I hope at least!
