#me artist’s statement
Since my highschool days with the advent of MySpace, I've been fascinated with the often stark differences between ones public persona and that which they project on the internet. I began to wonder: is the face I see "IRL" more or less authentic than the one someone cultivates on the internet?
Another aspect of this is which social media site, or "medium," they are using. I have noticed trends unique to each site. Do the constraints of the medium alter the way which we frame ourselves, or do we intentionally change how we present ourselves differently for each site?
Last: what is authenticity on the internet? Is it a stream of consciousness of images or text detailing ones day-to-day thoughts and experiences? Or is it rather more infrequent, conscious choices to more succinctly encapsulate who we see ourselves as? Do we define ourselves by what we do and choose to consume? Or rather, is the very nature of the internet a performance in which we are unknowing actors?
