The alpha growled low in his throat when the omega presented his neck like that to him. It was a show of submission (such a good boy), and Carlos couldn't help but take advantage of the opportunity. He nosed at the skin their softly before biting him. It wasn't a hard bite. No blood was drawn, and no mark would be there in the morning. It was a tease. A mock of a claiming bite. Showing the omega exactly what he /could/ do, but wouldn't. Not yet. Not until given permission. He...ll. Carlos didn't even know the omega's name, but he was already growing attached to him. He was already considering binding them together for the rest of their lives. But that was probably due to the scent of /mate/ coming off of the beautiful omega. How could any alpha possibly resist?
People were beginning to stare as their dance slowly become them just standing still while Carlos held the omega close and buried his face in that delicious neck, licking and nipping tenderly. Carlos had never been this forward before with anyone...not even with Cecil. It was a new experience for him. And he probably wouldn't have the nerve to talk to or interact with an omega like this if his identity wasn't protected by his mask. Carlos growled threateningly at a few other alphas who seemed to have become interested in what was going on, and scenting the air to smell /his/ omega. The warning growl appeared to scare the other alphas off, and that pleased Carlos.
In order to avoid any sort of problems, he took the other male away from the dance floor. He took the his hand and smiled. "Come with me...Let's take a walk." Then he led him on the pathway that went around the park, where people would normally walk on a sunny day and enjoy the view. It was dark, but the starlight and the lights from the masquerade lit the way for them. Once they'd gotten a little ways away from the party, things were quieter and they had a little more privacy. Carlos still hadn't let go of the omega's hand, content to just hold it as they strolled along together.
"Tell me about yourself. Not...Not your name. You can keep your identity a secret if you'd like. Just...things that you like to do...The things that make you...you." Carlos smiled, wondering if that made any sense. "I would like to get to know you..."
Cecil gasped as the alpha's teeth dented his skin, stiffening slightly, trying to keep his legs from buckling him. His heart was pounding and everything was screaming at him to submit and let the alpha take him as his. It was... not alarming. No, there was never cause for alarm in Night Vale. But... a bit of necessary unease. This was a stranger. At least as far as Cecil knew.
Grateful that his mask at least hid some of the violet blush that was creeping along his cheeks, Cecil could only lean into the alpha at the attentions to his neck, long fingers of one hand slipping through the soft dark curls (and perfect curls they were!). Now of course Cecil wasn't one for violence (that was cause for misdemeanors and no one wanted too many of those on their record!), however, the growl that his dance partner let off had his toes curling and tingles spreading down his spine.
The omega was hardly aware as he was led away, following without really a single thought. But really, how could he not? What an adventure this was! And of course he had to find out how it would end. Otherwise how would he ever know what might have happened? His heart was fluttering in his chest as they walked. Cecil gave him a small smile, shrugging with a shoulder as he stuck his free hand in his pocket. "About me... Well. I like to talk. A lot." He laughed softly. "I'm a Night Vale resident. Always have... always will. I have a pet. He's adorable. I'm not much of a cat person, I'll admit... but he somehow got to me." Cecil pursed his lips, trying to think. God, just as bad as Carlos. He always had things to talk about with a microphone in front of him. But in person... he was an idiot. "Uhm...." Shut up, Cecil. Just stay quiet and don't make it worse. "Yeah. That's a bit about me."

Oh gosh. The stranger had actually accepted his invitation to dance. Carlos took a deep breath to calm his nervousness and to get his hands to stop shaking. Once he was ready, he smiled at his new dance partner and took his hand, leading him to the dance floor. The band was playing a slow song, perfect for a romantic dance to woo the beautiful omega he'd just met. Of course, Carlos hasn't actually just met him. But he didn't know that it was Cecil. Cecil, the beautiful, amazi...ng, perfect omega who Carlos hadn't just worked up the courage to call for personal reasons just yet. He had no idea that the man behind the mask was Night Vale's radio host. Then again, Cecil sounded different in person. His radio voice was much deeper. And Carlos hadn't been around the omega enough to really get used to his scent.
But oh that scent. The omega just smelled.../amazing/. Carlos struggled not to bury his face in the other's neck and scent him as he started to lead him in a slow dance. The alpha smiled, holding his partner close, but not too close. Carlos wasn't the best dancer in the world, but he wasn't the worst either. He was a pretty decent lead, actually. There were plenty of other couples dancing together, so it wasn't like all eyes were on them. There was no pressure, no strings attached, no commitment needed. They didn't even know each others names. It felt...comfortable. This night could go however they wanted it to and there would be no consequences when the sun rose the next morning.
Carlos leaned in, nose softly nuzzling the omega's ear out of instinct before speaking in a gentle tone so only they could hear what he was saying. "You're very good at this. Thank you for agreeing to be my partner-- er, /dance/ partner. Heh..." Smooth, Carlos. "I'm so sorry, I know this is supposed to be a private sort of event, but I just have to say...You smell /amazing/. Don't sorry, I can't exactly place your scent, so your identity is still a secret. You just...You smell so good." As if to prove this point, the scientist gave in to his baser urges to scent the omega's neck. He smelled like home. Like...Like /mate/. But he wouldn't say that out loud. No sense in scaring the poor guy off.
Cecil's heart fluttered, pushing against his ribs as the alpha led him in a slow dance. He was.. handsome from what he could see. And that voice. It was familiar. But there really wasn't anyone that Cecil didn't know. That's what came about being a radio host as well as a good citizen. If you didn't know everyone, then how would you be able to help the Sheriff's secret police if they asked?
He sucked in a sharp breath as the other male nuzzled him, breath ghosting over Cecil's skin and causing the omega to blush lavender. "I... not really. We don't do this sort of thing here normally." Especially this sort of dancing. However... it was nice.
"I... well...." He stumbled over his words, mentally kicking himself. He was a radio host! He had a way with words like no other. God, this was as bad as the time he'd said 'neat' to Carlos. "Thank you. Though you smell quite good as well." He squeaked out, squeezing his eyes shut as the alpha leaned in, hand on the other's shoulder tightening fractionally.
With him this close, the alpha's scent was much stronger, bringing a wave of want and desire over Cecil, who swallowed hard. He had to fight with himself not to lean against the other and bare his neck to him, compromising by hanging his head, neck partially open.
Khoshekh’s trapped for a reason.
Carlos doubts it’s actually a cat, but Cecil has no idea what Carlos is talking about.
The light grey one’s a kitten.
I should really learn to actually draw cats, he looks more like a dog/wolf/fox thing
- And now, the weather - the familiar caramel voice (that wasn’t the usual smooth, sonorous voice) cut off the news just in the middle and the whole town knew what’s going on. Since Night Vale knows almost everything about Cecil and Carlos relationship, it isn’t hard to predict that citizens will get used to the new voice which sometimes is heard all of a sudden and the weather that it’s not just a song but an entire album, an opera or a concert- at least 1 hour long. They know what happens during the weather. Well, who needs privacy?

Carlos' outfit for the evening stuck strictly to a black and white color scheme. It was simple and it was elegant. His tuxedo was a traditional black and white one, complete with a black tie. The mask that hid half of his face, but left holes for the eyes, was black with thin, white lines painting beautiful designs. The simplicity of his outfit was probably enough to give away his true identity, surrounded by Night Vale citizens in extravagant and unique attire. But Carlos wa...sn't typically one for such grand things. He was a simple man. A scientist. And it shouldn't matter what he was wearing, since he almost didn't even show up in the first place.
It was a bit disorienting to not know who anyway was. There were no familiar faces, because everyone's face was covered or obscured by their fancy masks. Then again, everyone else was probably thinking the same thing. But it was sort of nice to be somewhere that no one knew who he was. He could do anything. He could be anyone. And he wouldn't have to worry about making a fool of himself. It was actually kind of exciting. Carlos was considering joining a group of strangers and chatting, or asking someone to dance. Then someone accidentally ran into him and was apologizing.
"No, no. It's alright. Really. No harm done." Carlos smiled brightly at the absolutely beautiful man in front of him. Something was very...familiar about him. But Carlos forced himself not to think about who this man could be. Discovering his identity would ruin the fun of the masquerade. So he shut off the thinking part of his brain, if only for one night. "Great party, huh? I just got here. Didn't expect it to be so...exciting. I almost didn't even come. But I'm glad I did. Otherwise, I wouldn't have run into you. Or, well, technically you ran into me, but that's not the point." Carlos laughed softly. He wouldn't be able to talk this comfortably with someone without the mask, he didn't think. "Anyway, I didn't come here with a date. And you look like you're here alone, too. So...would you like to dance? With me, I mean?"
It was odd, everyone with masks. Cecil wasn't quite sure if he liked it. It had a bit of similarity to the hooded figures. Or the faceless old woman who lives in your house. Cecil could scent the other male as an alpha. And there was a faint lingering of... cleanliness. Though that was a lot of Night Vale. He didn't keep too much thought on it. As that was the point of this supposedly. Anonymity.
"I.. suppose." He said with a smile. "It's.... different. We don't do things like this normally in Night Vale. " He murmured with a shrug. "But it's... interesting. " Cecil looked around. "It's pretty. The people that did it did a good job." He laughed with the other male, looking away. However at the question, Cecil looked up, flushing under the mask. "I... yes. I'd like that. "

"What's a masquerade? Well...It's sort of like a party. Everyone dresses up-- In dresses and tuxedos! And everyone wears a mask to cover their face so that no one knows who anyone else is. That way, the guests can feel free to comfortably speak with anyone about anything, because their identity is hidden so no one has to know who they are if they don't want to share that information. It's a lot of fun, actually. Or so I hear. I've never actually been to one myself...But I've seen masquerades in movies and such before, and they look highly amusing. I will be going to this one, though. If I can get away from my experiments for a night. Anyway, thank you for helping me once again by getting the word out. Remember: Friday night, Mission Grove Park. I would give a specific time, but you and I both know that time doesn't exactly work here in Night Vale."
Carlos gave a little chuckle at that. He would never cease to be amused by the strange wonders of this beautiful and terrifying desert community. Time not working. How was that even possible? It was a scientists job to ask these sorts of questions, then design and execute experiments to test for the answers. Maybe one day he'd solve the time mystery. Then maybe he could find a way to fix it and set everything right again, because time in Night Vale was moving so slow that it wasn't synchronized with the rest of the world. If he ever planned on going back to where he came from, that would be more concerning that he currently perceived it to be.
"Thank you again, Cecil. Goodnight!" Carlos hung up the phone and went back to his most recent experiment. The animals in Night Vale had spontaneously started speaking English for some unknown reason. "Masquerade? You going on a date with the radio guy?" Greg, the frog asked curiously. "What? No! No. I'm not going on a date with Cecil. This is just...It's not like that. I might not even go...I don't know. Just...Let's just focus on these tests, okay? I still have a lot of questions to ask you." The frog obediently didn't bring up that subject again for the remainder of the experiment.
Friday night came faster than Carlos anticipated. Mission Grove park had been transformed into an absolutely beautiful outdoor ballroom. Pretty lights illuminated the trees, a stage for live music was set up, and there were tables upon tables of delicious looking food (none of which contained wheat or wheat by-products). Lots of people were arriving already, dressed in such fancy clothes. Everyone was adhering to the rule that they had to wear a mask. Carlos himself had finally decided to go thanks to a very persuasive frog named Greg. The scientist stood amongst the crowd in a black tuxedo and matching mask. However, the mask had designs and sparkles on it, where the tuxedo did not. So far, no one had recognized him. At least, not that he was aware of. All of the guests were smiling and dancing and looked like they were having an all around good time, so he was satisfied that this event was going to be a success.
A masquerade... well it sounded fun to say the least. Cecil wondered if the Sheriff's secret police would have a problem with it. The whole covering your identity. But, he assumed as Carlos had been able to speak to him about it they already knew it. Perhaps they were... curious as well. If he were free to make such an assumption.
"Of course! I'll mention it on the air tomorrow." Cecil assured. "It sounds... fun!" He wrote the details on his palm as he walked. He glanced to the stars. "Yes I remember what you said about it." Time was so... confusing. He remembered Carlos being so... excited about it. But he didn't quite.. understand what made it so.. special. Or worrisome. That was just the way things were. Cecil knew no different. After a few moments they hung up leaving Cecil to finish his walk to his home, hands in pockets, wondering about this 'masquerade'.
The next day Cecil couldn't help the excitement that slipped into his tone as he got on the air. "Dear Listeners! You wouldn't believe who called yesterday! Well, maybe. But don't go ruining. It was Carlos. You know. The scientist. Well. He called last night right after I got off the air. And he's throwing a... party. Sort of. He called it a masquerade. Isn't that a fun word, dear listeners?!" Cecil idly played with a pen on the desk, spinning it, keeping an eye on the odd green spot on the wall across the room. "So. It's this like... party sort of thing. But you get all dressed up. Sorta like for those town meetings. But then this is the most interesting part. You wear masks! So then you can... I don't know. Guess who people are? He said so that people wouldn't know who you were. So you can talk without people... knowing I guess? Anyways. It sounds neat! So. It's going to be on Friday. Mission Grove part, listeners. I want to see you there. Well. Or not see you. With the masks. But now, for the weather...."
Friday came far quicker than Cecil realized and he was making his way to Mission Grove. It was... amazing. It had literally been entirely changed. He'd been worried that he would do it wrong, dressed in a dark tuxedo with purple accents. His mask was black and purple as well with white accents. However, looking over the others... it seemed he'd guessed correctly.
Cecil watched couples dancing, a soft smile playing on his lips. The only problem he realized was the mask did cut off a little bit of his peripheral vision. And how he did that was by bumping into someone in a dark tuxedo and matching mask. "Oh forgive me I'm so sorry!"

Carlos had come to Night Vale to study all of the scientific anomalies that seemed to be standard in that strange, obscure city. As a man of science, he had instantly become entranced by all of the incredible discoveries he and his reliable team were constantly making. In a town where literally anything could happen, Carlos was certain of one thing: His work in Night Vale would never be finished. Even if for some reason his funding fell through, he could always try and find another source. Or, if it came down to it, he could take on a normal job in Night Vale and do science experiments on his own time. No matter how apparently dangerous that place was, and no matter what it took, Carlos would find a way to stay. Night Vale was absolutely /fascinating/! Why would he ever want to leave?
For the first year that he was in Night Vale, Carlos was well aware that he had caught a certain residences attention and blatantly obvious affection. Cecil Palmer, the voice of Night Vale. He ran the most popular radio broadcast in town, alerting everyone of what was going on and keeping everyone well informed. Carlos would occasionally enlist the man’s help in spreading the word about some new danger or strange occurrence. Carlos may wear glasses, but he wasn’t blind to the way Cecil acted around him. It was clear that he was romantically interested in him. And as if that weren’t enough, he was constantly telling his listening about Carlos and his “perfect hair”. Carlos’ team of scientists always teased him about his “radio boyfriend”. And yes, he always listened to Cecil’s show.
It wasn’t that he wasn’t interested in Cecil. Oh no, of course not. Cecil was sweet and beautiful and just as interesting as the rest of Night Vale. And Carlos was definitely gay, so that wasn’t the issue. As an alpha male, Cecil being an omega made him all the more desirable. He would have loved to take the radio announcer on a date as soon as he met him! But Carlos came there for a reason. He was supposed to be doing important, extensive research. Time didn’t work, they couldn’t feel the intense earthquakes happening right below them, angels appeared to be real (despite the City Council’s repeated claims that they were not). There was just so much to do and Carlos was always so busy. He just didn’t have time to date right then, as much as he wanted to.
One of the members of his team of scientists had taken up reading in her free time. In her most recent book, there was a scene involving a masquerade. Ever since she read about the beautiful masks and the dancing and the fun, she couldn’t get it out of her mind. The scientist asked Carlos if they could host a masquerade for Night Vale, as a way to have a little fun amidst all the usual danger, and to give back to the community that they had grown to love. At first, Carlos wasn’t so sure. There was so much science to do…But when she told him that he could use it as some sort of social experiment, he finally agreed. Yes, it would be interesting to see how the citizens of Night Vale reacted to something like a masquerade. Would it turn out horrifyingly disastrous? Probably. Most things in Night Vale did. But it was still be interesting. So that night, Carlos took out Cecil’s phone number that he kept just in case and called him.
"Hey, Cecil. It’s me, Carlos. I’m calling to let you know that my team of scientists and I are throwing a masquerade this Friday night in Mission Grove Park. Could you please announce this on your show? I need your help to get the word out!"
Cecil never had hidden the fascination he found with Carlos the Scientist. He was one of the first to spot him and he’d instantly been taken. But how could he not? With his perfect hair and his perfect face. And he did science! He just… it made his heart do weird things. Things that he probably should have actually reported to the Sheriff’s secret police. Which he basically did by his constant speaking of him to his listeners. He just… was amazing. And he was an alpha. Which had the omega personality of Cecil literally purring. Or chattering. Whatever it wanted to do at the moment. It just… all the other alphas wereboring. Like Steve. Gross. Steve Carlsburg. Yuck. Gross. Goddamn Steve Carlsburg.
Anyways. Enough of that man.
Much more fun to think of Carlos.
He probably thought of him a bit too much. But, his listeners hadn’t complained. And he hadn’t received any slips of paper under the door. Nor had he had a knock on the door in the middle of the night. So… Cecil would continue until he was told to stop. And might even after that.
It just… Carlos was so different. And so so perfect. And neat. God, why had he said neat? Ugh, out of all the words he could have said. ‘Neat’. He worked at the radio for heaven’s sake! (Angels do not exist!) He wasn’t like alphas that Cecil knew. He wasn’t like really anyone that Cecil knew if he were honest.
But sadly… they really didn’t talk. Carlos had called a few times in order to get the word out to the people of Night Vale for various things. But never a… personal call. And it oddly… felt bad. It shouldn’t. It was just a phone call. So why did it make him… sad. That was the word. It was on the way home after his shift that he got the phone call. He was surprised that Carlos was calling, unable to keep the small smile that formed on his lips at the sound of the scientist’s voice. He listened in silence before nodding. “I’ll let them know first thing tomorrow, Carlos!” But… A masquerade… “Uhm… what exactly is a masquerade?” He felt a bit foolish having to ask but assumed it was some… odd tradition or something that was totally common where Carlos came from.
