been thinking about pre and post mockingjay peeta a lot lately.
there’s such a latent comedy to the absurdity of katniss’ denial of her feelings. every time she starts doing some bullshit like fantasizing about peeta’s arms or kissing the pearl i would be yelling at my book out loud “GIRL NO ONE IS MAKING YOU DO ALL THAT” and she would not hear me. my pleas would go unanswered. it is so cruel and yet so comical i had to laugh so i wouldn’t cry

suzanne collins is such a genius... the cultural phenomenon of her series leading to the hanging tree house remixes, mockingjay being milked for two (bad) movies, the capitol-inspired makeup palettes, the halloween costumes, the explosion of the market for dystopia, the butchering of her characters and removal of disabilities, disfiguration, and racial tension + representation to sell more tickets, the extra gale scenes to fuel discourse, and the audience showing up to cinemas to watch what was pretty honestly marketed to them (the jacob vs edwardification of the symbolic love story and also to watch children fight to the death) it's just so ridiculously ironic i would say you can't write this shit, but she did write about it... in The Hunger Games published 2008

Like. I am so haunted thinking about this. How must that convo have gone. I imagine peeta must have brought it up first like dead serious and haymitch fr did think for a moment he was gonna drop a bomb like i can’t fucking stand katniss only for him to sit him down in his room deeply sigh and be like, “so I’ve been in love with this girl since i was like five and idgaf about making it out i just need you to help me figure out a way to keep her alive until the end.” Poor haymitch has to go through every stage of grief from “dear Lord you have terrible taste” to “do you have any idea what you’re saying” to finally the terrible realization that he absolutely does understand, because he’s been him before. Somehow, some way, the universe threw him headfirst into another desperate boy, another desperate situation, another desperate love. A game he’s played before, and lost. And for all he knows at that moment, a game that’s about to be lost again. He truly did not drink enough i fear

Part of what makes everlark so good is the way peeta is so wholly and earnestly able to concede that katniss is able to protect herself and him without feeling weird or insecure about it. Like, every time i remember this scene i just beam from ear to ear bc it’s so good!! He’s exactly where he wants to be he knows his girl is strong and has his back!!!
But also, it adds so much weight that peeta doesn’t protect katniss bc he feels like he needs to for any reason, but bc he genuinely wants to. He wants to protect this girl who—mind you—lived her whole life protecting others and assuming that the only reason anyone would want to protect her is if they got something out of it. And to be fair, the way people treat her as the mockingjay absolutely confirms this. In the eyes of the rebellion, she is very much protected only inasmuch as she is ideologically profitable to them, using “protection” as a guise of demeaning her agency. Only peeta goes to the very end protecting her no matter what cost it comes at to him… even when it means protecting her from herself.

The case for katniss hot/peeta cold: obv “girl on fire” allusion, katniss is already kind of a hothead, i love the idea of her throwing herself at peeta in the summer when their ac breaks on the occasion and he never complains about how sweaty she is bc her being warm means she’s alive and he’s happy :)
The case for katniss cold/peeta hot: peeta’s “warmth” is what katniss loves about him, she gets extremely cold in winter and doesn’t say anything but peeta’s arms always find their way around her and keep her toasty (haha toast), but she Also would not protest him doing that in the summer bc he’s warm and that means he’s alive and she’s happy :)
The case for both hot: they both get very gross and sticky in bed and they don’t care bc they’re together and that’s what matters also it just means they have to dress extra light for bed if they’re planning on cuddling ;)
The case for both cold: they get to huddle for warmth like penguins and cling to each other in the winter under a big cozy blanket…

Can’t stop thinking about how deeply katniss ached when she was at odesta’s wedding watching them be happy and tender while getting married even though gale was RIGHT THERE. I’m sorry but she did not want his ass even a little
