To be honest I had no idea what to expect before watching this film… I have never really had an interest in “performance art” but I also really never really looked at much either. First immediate though after the film ended was that Marina is insane… dedicated, smart, talented, funny and beautiful, but insane. I think that her performances pieces are very interesting and thought provoking, but what I enjoyed the most was some of the photography from her works, they are absolutely stunning. But then the question becomes is it her work or the photographers at that point. Regardless of people liking her performance work or not, I think that maybe her pieces are not about you liking them, but about how they make you feel and what they make you think about. With her Artist is Present show/piece at the MOMA it was a very beautiful and touching moment when she reaches across the table to grab Uli’s hands, yet she is having a very private moment with her soul laid bare on display for the world to see. The reactions of the spectators are very telling and often more interesting than the actual works themselves. The range of emotions on the faces of the people that sat in the chair facing Marina was pretty incredible. She says this earlier in the film “It doesn’t matter what kind of work you are doing as an artist the most important is from which state of mind you are doing what you are doing.” and I think that is actually a very powerful statement.
