52°21 N 127°40 W I do a lot of virtual geo-trekking using google maps. I’ll find an area of the world that sounds interesting, drop the little yellow explorer, and follow whatever road I land on. Recently I’ve become captivated with the coast of BC, Canada. At the end of the last ice-age, as the glaciers of North-America melted, they carved up this part of the world creating a dramatic landscape where ocean inlets (deep enough to harbor whales) weave their way between towering peaks, many of which are completely cut off from the mainland. Here, in place of roads, the surprisingly vast network of towns and First Nation’s villages are serviced by a network of ferry routes, many of which have been mapped by google. Last month, a followed one of these to its end and discovered the town of Ocean Falls; I’ve been obsessed ever since. Ocean Falls was a former company town founded by the Bella Coola Pulp and Paper Company. The site was chosen for its unique geography, which features a lake hanging roughy 100ft above sea level that feeds in to a deep ocean inlet, allowing the town and mill to be powered by hydro-electricity. The town grew to a peak of around 3500 residents in the 1950s, and at various points in its history had the largest hotel and indoor gymnasium in Western Canada. A number of disasters lead the town to become no longer economically viable and it was sold off, along with the paper mill, to the government, who closed the mill only a few years later. Today, it still has roughly 200 seasonal and permanent residents, some of which are actively working to try and restore some the houses and municipal buildings, most of which have been consumed by the landscape.
