Am I the good boy? Really??
I mean this in the most sincere, heart-filled-with-love way, this dog looks like a worm on a string

Hey can we queers please remember that the rural queer experience has unique challenges thanks
Coming out is different when you know if you come out to one person you risk the whole town knowing. Coming out is different when religion is entwined in your entire community. Being queer is different when you can't trust that your doctor or therapist will stay confidential. Being queer is different when conversion therapy is subtle and normalized. Transitioning is different when there aren't gender clinics or gender therapists for 50 miles. School is different when other kids are put at risk by being seen with you. Can we stop acting like there aren't queer people living in rural areas and start supporting them

Do not punish the behaviour you want to see
I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?
But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize, snarkily say, “So, you’ve decided to join us”?
Or when someone does something they’ve had trouble doing, say, “Why can’t you do that all the time?” (Happened to me, too often.)
Or any sentence containing the word “finally”.
If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Don’t complain about how it’s not enough. Don’t bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.
Because I swear to fucking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.

In related news, I cannot read the Little House series any longer without going “Oh wow this is real fucked up. I can’t believe this snapshot of the colonialism process as it happened is like such a feel good book for so many people. That’s fucked up.”
The book; talking about how all the settlers in Kansas KNEW they were on Osage land, but didn’t give a shit because they all figured that the US Government was going to break the treaty and come in and either kill all of the Osage tribe or forcibly resettle them (they were, of course, right.)
My elderly relatives; It’s such a nice book!
Me; Are you…are you SURE about that.
I’ve gotten no less than fourteen nasty messages about this post, four of them telling me to kill myself and stop ruining classic American literature with my “braindead r-word liberal agenda”, so I think it’s time to reblog it and restate this!
We read Big Woods when I was in grade school and learned to make candles and carve soap and basically all the skills that the family showed in that first book. So our teacher decided to start reading some of the rest and we only got about two or three chapters in before the teacher noped so hard out of it and apologised to the First Nation and Metis kids for not reading ahead and thinking they were all going to be about making sausage and headcheese.
