 THEY'RE STARING. THEY'RE ALL STARING. a bead of sweat slowly trails down the back of your neck, disappears beneath the collar of your shirt. you normally know exactly how much to bring, the precise amount of change you need for your order, but at the last second you'd decided to buy a strawberry danish for natalie and that fucked up your process and now you don't have enough but you can't in good conscience put it back and turn up empty - handed but you still don't have enough and EVERYONE IS WAITING ON YOU so can you PLEASE hurry it up you FUCKING ——

 seemingly out of nowhere, a hand reaches forth and drops a quarter into the barista's awaiting palm, and she rings out the change with a roll of her heavily mascaraed eyes. your thoughts are interrupted, and the angry voice is gone, replaced by the general muted murmur of an everyday coffee shop.

 trying desperately to hide the way you're still faintly trembling, you slowly turn to face the person who'd stepped in to save your hide, sleepless eyes darting anywhere but their face.

bright fluorescent lights and the distant beeping of hospital machines are the only things that manage to keep her awake where she shifts uncomfortably in the hospital's metal chair. and even if it weren't impossible to get and stay comfortable, she wouldn't be able to sleep anyway, not when her mother was sick, alone in a room down the hallway.

she almost doesn't see him approach her, curled up with her knees brought to her chest, hooded sweatshirt pulled over her head in a useless attempt to keep warmth in and light out. she lifts her head when she hears someone come to a stop in front of her, pulls the hood back to reveal a curious raise of her brows and messy reddish ponytail. eyes are red, bloodshot, betraying just how LITTLE she's slept, as she unfolds herself from awkward position, sits up properly in order to look at him.

she looks at what he's offering next: coffee and some sort of zero nutritional value vending machine snack. it looked a lot like heaven, right now.

' what, did i look like i needed a pick-me-up that bad? ' she answers after a long moment, and it's supposed to sound amused, but her voice comes across tired and scratchy, and she clears her throat, offers a half-smile as she reaches up to take what's offered. ' .... thanks. ' she takes a few moments to enjoy the warmth of the coffee cup that radiates against the palm of her hand she looks up at him again. ' hey - don't i know you? i mean, other than the fact that i think i've seen you walk by here a dozen times. '

 his eyes sting. the fluorescent lights above irritate them further, but at least the pediatric ward’s walls — colorful and decorated, to appeal to their younger visitors — are a welcome change from the rest of the hospital’s glaring, blinding eggshell white.

 a sleepless night ran over into a busy day, and after just barely surviving his classes, he’d stopped at a gas station to pick up an energy drink ( his third that day ) and chug it on the way to visit nat. early on, during a rare display of fear on her part, he’d made a promise to visit her every day during her inpatient treatments. if nothing else, he keeps his word, and just seeing her face makes his shoulders feel a little lighter.

 but as with all good things, the visit came to an end, and he was ushered out of the room by a friendly enough nurse who then whisked natalie away for more testing. he walked with her, held her tiny hand until the swinging set of doors that denied him entry. so, back to the waiting room he went — the one a floor or two below, with a better snack selection and one of the only vending machines that served coffee.

 he'd noticed her sitting by her lonesome, and even without the track team sprinting around her, he'd known exactly who she was. that bright shock of orange hair's hard to miss. but even sitting alone, knees bent to her chest, she somehow manages to look even lonelier. it's a feeling he knows too well.

 ❛ mn... maybe, ❜ he mumbles, giving a non-committal rub at his aching neck as he all but slumps into a chair opposite hers, equally stiff and uncomfortable. ❛ i film the uh, the track meets. at your school. and other... events. . . . f-for money, i mean. from the school! not like— ❜ he clears his throat, blue eyes focusing distractedly at a small stain on the carpet. ❛ yeah, i uh, i graduated... a few years ago. they probably just like me 'cause i'm local and don't charge a lot, i think. ❜

anyway i am begging you all to look at this bomb-ass carrd that i commissioned from koi / @angrygod . they are so incredibly talented and 10000% understood the assignment (and my nasty boy) with the graphics and overall feel / aesthetic.

the thing that really tears me apart about august is that he really does have a lot of untapped potential that only shines through in his work with vic and june.  he has fantastic vision in all of his films, but he never received any encouragement or interest from his family, aside from natalie.  this has, of course, destroyed any sense of self-worth or confidence in his abilities, and he’ll be damned before he lets anyone point out his accomplishments.  he never heard it from the people he needed the most; he’s not gonna take it from anyone else.
