065 The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1997)

This is how I like my classic literature adapted: with BRIAN BLESSED, enormous wigs, and violence.

It finally occurred to me when I was rewatching The History of Tom Jones A Foundling that of course we don’t have to imagine Peter as an incurable old fop wearing red velvet and gold lace

because once upon a time he was Lord Fellamar, the foppingest fop who ever fopped (in red heeled shoes no less) (except when he wasn’t wearing anything at all but lipstick and a towering wig) (and if all that sounds dirty it should — even despite his bath he’s a very dirty boy indeed).

Tom Jones would have been a fun gig regardless what with the amazing cast — especially BRIAN BLESSED as Squire Western — but you know Peter must have been super chuffed to actually get paid to indulge in his most glorious macaroni fantasies.

(And it’s the closest to a Peter-as-Valmont-Dangerous-Liaisons might-have-been since Lindsay Duncan originated the role of the Marquise de Merteuil on stage and of course in the film Peter was Azolan, the most loyal valet in the world, with his lockpicks and loose morals.)

The pilot is the perfect soft reboot. Bill is an instantly loveable new companion, an intelligent and imaginative girl who doesn't go to university but still attends the Doctor's lectures and when she doesn't understand something, she doesn't frown. She smiles. She's even lesbian. Her new personal tutor is an old man who plays guitar in his office, you're introduced to the Doctor through her eyes in the span of several days with old sonic screwdrivers on his desk, a photo of Susan Foreman, a police box that's way too big to have gotten through his door, and his reflection appearing in an ancient photo of Bill's mother that just showed up one day. His big happy smile when she can't understand how the TARDIS doors are impenetrable, when he tells her she's safe here and she always will be. I've been a whovian since adolescence but the pilot makes me feel like I'm seeing it for the very first time.

One of the most jarring moments of my university education was in a physics class when I was given a device that measures gravity and was told “this cost the university sixteen thousand dollars, but the only glass blower in the world who could make the glass springs inside it died so it’s literally irreplaceable. If you drop it those springs will shatter. Go fuck around with it for a day and take some measurements”

In the UK there's a thing called the endangered crafts list which I highly recommend if you fancy discovering some crafts you never even knew existed. Scientific and optical instrument making is considered 'critically endangered' and glassworking (scientific glassware) is just considered endangered, which is for 'crafts with a shrinking market share, an ageing demographic or crafts with a declining number of practitioners.' There's some other crafts in that category which are easier to teach yourself or go to classes on that list, like lithography, marbling or block printing on fabric, so it might be worth considering those if you're looking for something to try.
