A lot of what I (and many other radfems) end up reblogging is about trans activism, but I think much of that is because the gender war is one of the most visible radfem issues in the US! Remember that gender abolition is NOT the sole viewpoint that radfems hold. The radfem agenda also counters pornography, prostitution, kink culture, capitalism, and every other patriarchal institution that oppresses women.  The radical feminist movement is not about a woman’s individual “empowerment” or what makes her feel confident; it’s about the liberation of all women from male supremacy.

I would also like to say that while certain aspects of queer theory are sexist and reinforce gender norms, these views are held by a tiny minority of the human population. 95% of the population is straight. Most people that reinforce gender norms are gender conforming heterosexuals. Most of the trauma that LGB AND T have is the result of abuse from sexist, gender conforming heterosexuals (often parents). I think that it is important to critique theories that don't make sense, but this conversation exists because straight parents can't stand having a daughter that likes trucks or a son that likes dolls. If our society did not assign gender to personalities, activities, clothing and interests, none of this stuff would have been an issue in the first place.

Cultures that endorse modesty and cultures that endorse hypersexualization are the *same* thing. Both define female sexuality by how it relates to the male gaze. In both cases the female body exists as an ornament either to be kept carefully hidden or put on display. Neither is an empowering feminist achievement.

I found some old photos of myself (I was around 18) and I was shocked to see how young and sick I looked. I always glorify my late teens/early 20s, but I feel like I do so in a way that is seriously unrealistic and not at all accurate. I think that part of the reason that I do this is because society glorifies young, thin females. However, I was absolutely sick and miserable for most of my early 20s. I was so sick that I often couldn’t focus in class and got poor grades as an undergraduate. I was constantly tired and I couldn’t lift things or do strenuous activities. Fast forward ten years and I am a healthy, strong female with a job that requires a lot of writing and critical thinking skills. I am “ugly” by patriarchal standards. I am masculine, hairy and not thin. However, I am fairly well-adjusted and happy. In many respects, I feel like this “nostalgia” for the past is just my internalized sexism trying to dismiss the Amazon that I have become. Don’t worry kids. It does get better.

One really evil thing that modern feminism has done is push us women away from one another. In the past, radical and liberal feminists could be in the same room and things would be relatively civil. I am over 30 and I remember when this was the case. We could work together on issues and support each other. Liberal feminism divides us into categories and pits us against one another. “Gender critical” conservative feminism pushes us away from potential liberal allies into the arms of conservative activism (which is ultimately controlled by misogynistic men). All of this bullshit makes us lonely and ineffective as activists. I think my one major piece of advice is to not ultimately go into fight mode and pick and choose your battles carefully. Find supportive connections when you can.  Even if they cannot articulate it, all people who were raised female feel the pain of female socialization within their hearts and souls. It is a wound that never really heals and patriarchy is the salt that is perpetually being poured onto it. Political maneuvers and virtue signaling are bullshit. We are all in the same struggle and at the end of the day we all know it even if we don’t want to admit it out loud.

“One is not born a woman” is a mistranslation. In French, Simone de Beauvoir actually wrote “one is not born feminine.”

The person who translated her work from French into English was a zoologist studying reproduction. The English publishing house had thought that de Beauvoir’s book was about “sex” as in a reproduction.

The zoologist in question was a man who had never studied philosophy and only knew some French from his years in school.

His translation was so awful, that de Beauvoir asked him to include a note in his book saying she completely disowns the work and is not associated with it in any capacity. de Beauvoir’s hier has repeatedly asked for a new English translation and calls the one we have “a scandal” and a disgrace.

As literally anyone with a Wikipedia knowledge of Simone de Beauvoir would know, she was an existentialist and thus did not believe in the idea of an “essence” —and thus would not believe the idea that anyone, male or female, was born with the “the essence of a woman.” Lmao!

One misconception about socialization is that when we say that it had an impact on someone, we are saying that they enjoyed the experience of being socialized as male or female. I never assume that someone enjoyed their socialization, was good at it or was able to relate to it in any meaningful way. To be perfectly honest, none of these things really matter in the grand scheme of things. Being socialized as male or female is about access to power and resources during the formative years. If you received male socialization, you had access to power and resources. Your parents train and educate you for an autonomous adulthood. Female children don't get that. We never learn how to live on our own as children. I had to teach myself everything I know about cars, home repair, financial management etc. because I was always expected to find a husband. I am sure that many of you gnc males/amab individuals were not great at those things, but us women had to start from nothing. We had our autonomy stolen from us as children.
