If you look closer at yesterdayâs post youâll see this intriguing man sitting, with chair, roadside infront of a payphone. After talking with for a few minutes he shared with me a few things he cherished from the past. One of which was the dial tone. #bellpayphoneproject#stories đ
Our Art Elevator got featured on the cover of Elevator World and we couldn't be more excited.

Conceived by Yitan Sun and Jianshi Wu, the 'New York Horizon' proposal was awarded first place in eVolo's annual skyscraper competition.
This is the kind of proposal/project that hurts architecture as a profession. It proposes solving a problem defined as âonly a small percentage of New Yorkers are able to benefit from this vast public garden each dayâ by building 1,000 foot walls and destroying the park by excavating it down to the bedrock..
The ambition is noble, âto reverse the traditional relationship between landscape and architecture, in a way that every occupiable space has direct connection to the natureâ, but the solution only accomplishes the opposite. No public space is more successful, inviting or available when you build walls around it. Still, a ludicrous idea like this gets awarded first place in eVoloâs annual skyscraper competition
What do you think? I am just being a grumpy old man?
I did a double take when I first saw this was the first place winner for the eVoloâs competition. I have not cared much for past entries I have seen throughout the years, most of the entries look more like an exercise in software mastering rather than architectural design, but the Yitan and Jianshi entry is a stark departure from most of the same old tower designs we have seen, and that is a good thing for architectural discourse.Â
I mostly agree with you @archatlas that âNo public space is more successful, inviting or available when you build walls around itâ. I think as an architectural concept, that is sound, but i can also see examples from Maya Lin, where the wall is the design. In the example of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, granted it is much more nuanced and the context is completely different, but it is an example of where a wall enhanced the design of a public space. This is not me defending 4 incredibly long and deep walls lining central park, but i think in another iteration of the design, the eVolo winner could be more successful as a realized project, but is that the point of it?
Is it meant to be a realized project or more of a statement on economics and urbanism? I am probably reading too much into this, but in a city where square inches are measured and accounted for, central park for decades, remained off the menu. Conceived as a lung for the city to breath, central park does a lot of good for its citizens, and as a precedent for cities that have come after it. However, how long until central park as we know it now, becomes dwarfed in shadow from rising skyscrapers. Can Cental Park not fight back (with design rather than public policy) against the ever rising skyline while still providing for its inhabitants. I wonder what the reactions and implications would be to raising the entire park 1000 feet up rather than down.Â
Anyway, long story short, I always love projects, ideas, images that fight the status quo of our environments, and not disturbing Central Park is the status quo. Also it feels that eVolo is seeming taking on Manhattan by declaring this the 2016 winner. Architectural drama, who dosenât love that.
