what happens with Basque wine and Rioja? I heard there are some problems going on but didn't understand the issue

Oh, wine and the Rioja protected designation of origin drama... Let's see if we can give a coherent response.
Let's go back to 1822, where new borders were proposed for the Spanish regions. In the area we're interested in, it was like this:
See? In black, nowadays limits. In blue, the ones proposed in the reform. As you can see, La Rioja - then called Logroño, as its capital - got two little parts of Araba. These two:
That are now known as Arabako Errioxa or, in Spanish, Rioja Alavesa. They produced wine in 1822, and still produce wine now, under the Rioja designation:
So why the drama? Because Basque wine producers now want to have a sort of sub-designation that says Rioja Alavesa, and some people - *cough* right wingers *cough* - have gone crazy stating that this is nothing but another nationalist claim that wants to break the Rioja protected designation of origin, which is completely false since they don't want to leave the designation, but have a sub-designation.
Like it happens with, we don't know, the Bordeaux wines??
But whatever, since the ones asking for it are Basques, they're separatists that want to damage a multi billion dollar business. Whatever.

Momentarily channels its inner Central Otago Pinot before reverting to type. Multifaceted with ample structure, substance and quintessential sangiovese acidity.
Still keeping us in suspense, this no ordinary annata WILL overstay its welcome in the chiller. Then again, you expect nothing less from Fontodi. — ★★★½

The 2016 Chianti Classico Fontodi brings together all the elements that make the Fontodi wines so unique, but with an extra kick of freshness and aromatic intensity that is the result of a year with notable diurnal shifts during the growing season. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and menthol develop in the glass, but it is the wine's extraordinary balance and sheer appeal that stand out most. In time, 2016 may very well become the new benchmark for Fontodi's Chianti Classico. The 2016 is flat-out delicious. That's pretty much all there is to it. Drinking Window: 2021 - 2036.

Giovanni Manetti has been managing his family's property since 1979. From the start he has been pushing the quality of the region forward and, as the new President of the Chianti Classico consortium, he continues to do so. Though not claimed as such, Fontodi's annata could technically be a Riserva and the 2016 is particularly spectacular. Still nascent, it's stunningly fragrant with scents of smoke, anise, dark red cherry and violet. Ample yet graceful tannins cling to the palate with succulent fruit to balance. It remains light on its feet, with a lift of liquorice on the long finish.
