Concert number one: complete. The holy water didn't even boil when I walked in. I'm losing my game.

We obviously don't play together now as much as we used to on tour -- 14 hours a day, everyday, vs. once a year at Christmas now.

But it took about three milliseconds to find that groove again. All the miniscule visual tics and cues. The count offs and cut offs solid as old stone floor -- Kahuna does three or four little barely visible heel taps when he counts off, depending on the time signature. I always look there.

Playing with people who know how to tune to each other and stagger breathe. The knowing little grins and nods to each other in the midst of it all. The almost familial interconnectedness. The groove.

Even in stupid little arrangements of silly little Christmas carols it's there. And that shit is downright cozy. Unity. Doing what we used to do together every day. Fucking uplifting to me, I'm not gonna lie.

Also, pecan kringle. The best thing ever.

Concert number two: complete.

Here's what I know now. My embouchure, the fancy word for chops, fucking hurts. I broke my face. From playing fourth grade level music at mezzo forte church levels. Not 110db fucking squeeze a penny between your ass cheeks blasting at the top of the range, but fucking Oh Come All Ye Faithful sheet music.

It doesn't matter.

What matters is I was with my boys again. In my element. Immediately and deeply loved at a glance, despite all my glaring foibles and fuck ups. Totally and completely accepted. Loved. We made inside jokes from 1995 like it was yesterday.

And there is something really magical about just being in a warm room with people when it's cold and blowing outside, too. Community. There just is.

Two more concerts tomorrow, if you can even call playing "God Rest Ye Jesus fuck it's literally just dotted quarter eighth notes for this entire page" a concert, but I don't care.

I'm warm and cozy and happy as fuck.
