He was always satisfied when she smiled, and it had been so long since her smile was a result of his own. Holding her in his arms, Bane felt a mixture of great joy and pain. He loved the way it felt to have her pressed pressed against her chest, the smell of her hair filling his nose. He loved feeling her chest rise and fall as she took breaths, loved how wonderful it felt to hold someone - especially Talia. Little moments of intimacy had becomes treasures in his world. She told him he wasn’t a beast, and he wished with all his heart that she was right. It meant a great deal that she cared so much about his sacrifice, how desperately she wanted him to see himself as more then a monster. There was no version of himself he’d rather be, then the hero in her eyes. Bane would strip away every other part of himself, until he could become the man truly worthy of her attention. Still, he couldn’t deny the things he’d done, which marred his spirit more then the white scars on his face. If he hadn’t been thrown in that pit as a child, his face, his entire being, could have different. Bane would be Dorrance; a man raised in sunlight, given a home, given a chance. But without his time in the darkness, Bane never could have known Talia’s light. “I think back to when we were childhood quite often. We were so, happy.” Things were not good by any stretch of the imagination, but they had each other. Talia was his happy playmate, playing pranks on him and her father. They had no idea the sadness they would endure for years to come. “When everything is done, we will have peace.” What peace looked like for them, as adults, he was entirely unsure. Bane didn’t even know if peace meant they were still in each others lives. She would always be his light, whether they were in an ice cream shop, or oceans apart.
