you know when you get Autism Mad. like something happens in a non-ideal way and in your brain you know it literally doesnt matter but in your other more autistic brain youre like screaming & scrying & shitting the bed etc. i think you should be able to go into settings and opt out of that. i have better things to get upset about than failing to put up a decoration on the optimal day or being too stubborn to solve a problem via simple communication
do you think bowser ever gets anxious after kidnapping peach again that he went too far this time and he calls mario up in the middle of the night to make sure they’re still on for tennis and gokarting next weekend
painstakingly dialing mario’s landline on a comically small telephone only for luigi to pick up instead and he has to ask him to put his brother on the phone. not that luigi isn’t part of weekend plans, but like this is really more of a mario & bowser situation and it’d be rude to drag his brother into it if there’s a problem. so anyway then luigi puts the receiver down to go get his brother and bowser sits there tapping his claws on his table and this is agony, actually, he shouldn’t have called at all, it’s late enough at his castle so it has to be even later over in the mushroom kingdom. but just as he’s about to put the phone down, mario answers all chipper—mario mario speaking, who’s-a calling? which is a ridiculous question because there’s no way luigi didn’t already tell him.—and bowser has to ask him. look, mario, i know i dangled peach in a bird cage over a pit of lava the other day, and when you showed up, i let my son throw giant flaming hammers at you, and there’s no hard feelings about that, right? and there’s a few seconds of silence before mario laughs and reassures him it’s all in the day’s work of a plumber, an explanation bowser has never thought to really question since he only knows two plumbers and it does all seem pretty in their wheelhouse. and then he’s embarrassed for worrying so much so he tries to end the call quickly, but mario just ribs him about how badly he’s going to lose the next race, and then he starts asking bowser how junior is, and does bowser want any of the leftovers since he and luigi really do cook way too much for two, be a shame to let it go to waste. and by the time bowser manages to hang up, this has gone from leftovers into him and junior and the koopalings all being invited over to the mario household for dinner, so long as they don’t park their airship on the front lawn and leave the cannons at home.

“That’s the advice I always give to writers:
Write only for yourself. That’s the only way to create something truly beautiful; if you speak to your soul.”
-Richard Gadd
insane production design choice to put a 1984 poster on niall’s bedroom door, because the immediate shorthand of the novel is obviously ‘big brother is always watching’—this idea of an omnipresent authority that continues governing your behavior even in moments of physical absence—which feels inextricable from the way ruben operates within the show. but what makes 1984 so genuinely horrifying is the psychological consequence of prolonged domination: the erosion of a private self, the way fear and control become so thoroughly internalized that the watcher no longer needs to stand in the room because he has already taken up residence inside you, rewriting how you understand love, loyalty, safety—and what you believe you deserve from all three.
that is exactly what ruben’s violence has done. even in his absence, everyone continues organizing themselves around him—anticipating him, contracting around wounds he opened years earlier, the past remaining not behind them but invasively, insistently present. he’s a specter lingering over everything.
which makes the placement on niall’s door so devastating, because this episode is about niall reaching—toward autonomy, toward a life expansive enough to finally contain honesty and desire. just away—far enough to exhale, far enough to start anew. and yet gadd frames his most private space with a novel about what total surveillance does to a person’s interiority and selfhood.
niall is trying to become someone. the poster is gadd telling you, in the most precise way possible, that big brother already got there first.
because in the end, winston smith—the protagonist of 1984—doesn’t just submit to big brother. he loves him.
Good morning! ☀️
"No! Scoob! Get back here!"
what is the sound of my sunday night. a window cracked open because the air is kind. i didn’t come into this world to suffer more than i have to. i came here to spend sundays on my couch. waiting to be more and more devastated by poetry. i want to borrow people from their misery so that i can laugh at my own. nothing on this earth belongs to us. the things we hold on to are letting go of us. “make yourself proud” but i’m in the process of redefining what it takes to do that. it’s sitting at home on a sunday, with my boredom, with my breath, amongst all the other things i take for granted.
Moriarty's cocktail in Ep. 1
Ok, I went looking for what the name of this cocktail was, because I wasn't sure how it was spelled based on Dónal's pronunciation, and I'd never heard of it before.
I'm a bit academic when it comes to booze, so this intrigued me.
Watching the scene over again, only two ingredients were obvious - whiskey, and, due to its green color, absinthe.
Can we just take a second to remember that this would be the real, green fairy, wormwood-derived spirit?
Possibly hallucinogenic?
Maybe a subtle, early clue regarding Moriarty's chaos?
So, I'm out tonight celebrating my director getting her PhD, and at the bar, my gin-enthusiast friend and I start to notice this place has a LOT of vintage drinks Ive rarely seen anywhere - the Gibson, the Singapore Sling, the Last Word, and...
the Sazerac.
I immediately recognized the name, and saw that, yes, it had rye whiskey and absinthe.
I tried some and I actually quite liked it even though I find some absinthe drinks too licorice-y.
Apparently, the Sazerac (which Dónal pronounces more like "satherac"), was America's first cocktail, developed in the 1830s in New Orleans.
I'm dying to know if there's a clue in here too about Moriarty and his past.
I wouldn't put it past Guy Richie and the showrunners to be super clever about this.
Happy National Library Week!! A great time to ask everyone you know if they have a library card.
