Hag Stones
What Is A Hag Stone? A hag stone, also known as an adder stone, holey stone, or Odin stone, is a rock that’s had water and other elements pushed against it to form a hole. They are typically heavy rocks with a smooth to grainy texture as seen in the picture! Folklore The names for these stones & their uses vary but region, but they’ve been used across the word in magick for a very long time. In particular, Germany. They are commonly found in Northern Germany, and Germanic legend states that hag stones are formed when snakes band together and form the holes with their venom. Uses Depending on who you ask, the hag stone has a very wide variety of uses. Primarily though, they are seen as a symbol of protection or warding from the evil eye, spirits, curses, nightmares, ect. This includes warding off other witch’s magick. This is believed because running water is very cleansing, so it makes sense that the hag stone would continue to possess that property outside of water. Keeping things around it safe from negative energies. The other primary use of a hag stone is the seeing of spirits, particularly Fae when you peer through it. Fun Fact An excellent example of both of these in entertainment that you might of see would be Coraline. She is given a triangular stone with a hole in the middle. To which afterwards Miss Spink and Miss Forcible argue if it’s for bad things or lost things. (I just really like Coraline, okay?) Okay, Where Do I Get One? Near water, creeks, rivers, lakes, oceans, ect. Since the movement of water and other elements is how the hag stone is formed that is where you’re going to find one. Bear in mind if you go to find one though, they’re rare from what I’ve read. What Are Your Experiences With Hag Stones? I recently found one which inspired this post. Although I haven’t had any direct experiences with it, I can totally see how a variety of cultures have seen them as useful. There’s just something about them. As far as where I found it, I found it near a river with TONS of rocks by it! I hope this helped you or you learned something! Enjoy! Have a lovely day 💖
