#but i also think part of niall's motivitation #is that he knows if he commits alby to being a “sexual deviant” he also committing himself to that title #<- prev. vigorously nodding!!!!!!! really think an interesting aspect of this scene is that it's not clear how much of his motivation is #defending alby or defending himself. it's certainly not a heroic moment. it's at best a sigh of relief at a near-miss #we've seen his worst moments come from this toxic level of people pleasing & trying to protect himself #so i think those things manifesting in such a way that they end up helping someone else is interesting too

seeing so many people just taking at face value the half man actors saying they didn't intend a homoerotic subtext between niall and ruben. idk how to put this but actors lie all the time about how they played their characters. it's one of the reasons it's so important not to get hung up on the "word of god"/paratext. i know asking fandom spaces to subscribe to death of the author would be an insane ask but i would definitely suggest the idea that if we are accepting stories can be told by unreliable narrators, perhaps their authors/creators/etc. can be unreliable too.

anyway. half man deals with a lot of fraught topics and a lot of morally dubious behavior from its characters, and the idea that relatively newer actors being thrust into the limelight from playing these roles want to create some kind of division from the character's behavior by feigning naivety to some of it is just completely unsurprising. i would be more surprised if these newer actors started seriously discussing the acting choices they made to portray the homoeroticism with their characters' pseudo-stepbrother.

actors have incentive to feign some degree of ignorance of the topics they are portraying to avoid difficult conversations and assocation with those topics. it’s usually a more pr friendly route over engaging in serious discussion/portraying yourself as some kind of expert in the topic. they can avoid a lot of expectation by just being the guy who picked up the script and read the lines

obligatory examples of the things i’ve seen people saying:

including the second tweet because it does feed quite apparently into a larger discussion that has been had for years about actors denying they were playing homosexual tension generally. i'm not saying they were always lying, but it's quite ridiculous to assume all cases were ignorance when there is great incentive for them to lie and feign ignorance, and in some cases almost unbelievable that they were entirely ignorant. but the relevant distinction with actors avoiding ownership of broadly perceived qualities of the character they’re portraying would, of course, be the motivation. homophobia being one, but obviously not the only one and contextually a fairly ridiculous accusation.

#bitter and salty that i'm not going to the race this year. i do think he'll love it tho #lately i've been reminiscing about last year's laguna seca. god that was divine #the 500 is a whole different animal obviously but laguna seca scratched a mark across my soul. in a good way #i swear i can smell the air sometimes
