Unpopular opinion. Your opinion of someone’s views doesn’t change them and has no influence on their practice. The witch community here has been a severe disappointment. You parrot each other and shame experiences that don’t perfectly match the ideas you hold for the craft. You incorrectly use phrases and try to give new meanings to ancient ideas that are simply unhealthy. I follow my own path. I am part of a coven that requires me to learn lots of different traditions and I’m halfway through a degree in witchcraft from my coven. I’ve been on this path for 8 years now and have picked up new ideas and belief systems everywhere I’ve been. This website has flat out told me that my experiences aren’t valid because I am not committed to one tradition. My totem animals that I spent 3 years in meditations to find, were dismissed as something else simply because I’m not native american. This website has even had people tell others not to use words like “Karma” because of the true meaning. I studied my star chart to be familiar with my own and lots of hindu culture to understand the entirety of it’s context. how DARE you tell me that I’m not supposed to use a word and spread the information I’ve gathered on it. There is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation, but you are simply asking for cultural erasure. I continue my searches to find people to communicate with. I want in depth conversations of beliefs and viewpoints, I don’t believe that my practices are the only correct ones. I think that everyone’s experiences are valid, I want to be as worldly and well-rounded as I can. I want to know your beliefs, but I will not tolerate you trying to erase others simply because you’re not educated enough on them to discuss. Spread knowledge not silence.

Friends. I expect so much, yet so little from the people I care about. I want them to notice when I’m breaking away and to comment on it, I want them to see when I’m hurting even though I try not to project it. I see their hurt, I question their pain. I try so hard to be the best friend to so many people. I compliment people in strange/different ways so they realize that it’s not fleeting or am offhand compliment. I want them to know what I see when I look at them. Ex. “Your freckles are so cute, mixed with your face you just look like a cute little pixie”(I said this 10 mins ago to someone upset that they didn’t have time to put makeup on because of finals) I’m the ego booster of friend groups. And I recieve compliments a good bit of time too, but there’s never the same amount of or feeling. I’m goth, so I get compliments on my accessories. I try to let people feel valid. I try to let them know I’ll always listen. I try to show that I’m an unconditional love type person and if I’ve marked you as a friend there is almost nothing I won’t forgive. I give away so much love to so many people. But I hardly ever feel it come back. All the people that I feel like an equal to and not like I’ve placed them higher then myself live far away. I moved and now I don’t see them. I can talk to them, but I can’t hug them. I’m a very touchy person and when I’m isolated and no one is okay with me holding a hand or leaving on them I feel abandoned, because I put a lot of love into them. I will continue to love these people. I won’t walk away or turn my back on them. They are good people and don’t realize what is happening. I don’t project my issues, they don’t know, it just hurts when they don’t even ask.

5 things every non-witch and/or non-wiccan person should know as to educate themselves and not be disrespectful to the witch/wiccan community?

Hmm. Up for debate probably but -

1. Don’t assume witchcraft is bogus and something to make fun of - ESPECIALLY if you suddenly are afraid of/hate witches as soon as someone mentions curses/cursing.

2. No, we’re probably not psychic.

3. We aren’t harbingers of demons unless we want to be.

4. No, we aren’t going to help you find a spirit animal because you don’t have one.

5. There is no false form of witchcraft. Every practitioner of magic is valid - either based on religion, status, race, culture, ability, etc.

How can you say every form is valid but say people don’t have spirit animals? Saying no that is a journey you have to take yourself, is nicer than telling people that it’s not real. I believe in the power of belief. People believe in them, do they’re real on some plane. I happen to know all 7 of my totem animals(each direction represents something different, so each gets a different guide), I studied under a priestess who taught me the meditation to find them. I agree with the rest of these, but saying no spirit animals is rude to people that believe that

Spirit animals are specifically from Native American traditions and outside of that is called cultural appropriation. You have to learn from a Native American or it called something else @gothwiccan. I really don’t care what your priestess taught you. If she is not NA it is not valid. Your experiences are - but the term is not correct nor respectful.

Religions have evolved and extended off of other religions longer than we have recorded history. I don't think it's cultural appropriation if you're well read and respectful of the subject. I'm from a coven that blends religions, I was taught basics in many different religions so I could have greater respect for them and since I believe in belief, I have more than just respect. I believe in it too. I understand being upset when people use terms wrong or disrespectfully. People should be informed of their mistake though, not shoved back angrily into ignorance. I have not yet had a Native American teacher, but I do plan to find one since I can only learn so much on my own. I also plan to find a reiki Master to teach me, even though I'm not fully Hindu(there are many non Hindu reiki masters, but that's the religion it's from)

Lonely. I'm so busy trying to keep the world together that when I self reflect I feel so alone. Every friendship that I've made, it's because I felt them hurting. I feel their pain and have the desire to help. I want people to be in a better place mentally then where I find them. I meet people and based on the severity of their pain changes how long I stay and how often I'm there during the pain. I don't want anyone to suffer alone. Yet here I am. I'm not looking for pity, this is not a cry for help. I have one really good friend whose been there for me for several years now, and I expect forever, but that friendship is long distance. If your reading this, my dear, don't feel bad. I need contact, human contact. I thought this website would help by letting me meet new people and that would cure my loneliness, but it hasn't worked in that way. I sit here with a heavy heart missing contact. I'm completely isolated. I'm recovering from jaw surgery, so no one understands my speech and everyone assumes my need to touch is an effect of the drugs that I'm more than used to (surgery was 2.5 weeks ago and I'm healing quite well). I just want people to feel with me. I want someone to sit in silence with me and allow emotions to fill the air. I want arms around me to remind me of the earth I'm on and give me the heart to get through these next few empty weeks. I'm in a city where I have no friends. My family moved after i graduated high school, I have friends in college and back where I'm from. But I'm isolated here. I can't very well make friends with this block in my mouth. I feel so trapped. I thought I was pining for love or romance, so I kept scolding myself. But I just want a person that can be present with me. Someone that'll understand me even through the muffled filter that gets me weird looks in public. The one thing tumblr has given me is an outlet. I have a hard enough time admitting these things to myself, it's important for me to write them down and realize the significance. I try to be there for everyone. I want someone to be there for me. I want someone to just check in or ask for my thoughts. I do it for so many people and I'm left wondering why no one does it for me

Most Common Culturally Appropriative Terms Used in Witchcraft (and alternatives to use in their place)

•Gypsy: racial slur for the Romani people. Incredibly insulting. Use ‘free spirit’ instead.

•Karma: Hindu term for the law of cause and effect (it’s way more complicated than that but I digress) if you are not a member of this culture and belief system, don’t use the term. Use ‘justice’ or ‘law of return’ instead.

•Chakras: Term for energy points in the human body. Same as above. Use ‘energy points’ instead.

•Smudging: Native American name for a sacred cleansing ceremony. Unless you are a member of this culture and have been trained in the confines of the tribe, do not use this term. Use ‘smoke cleansing’ instead.

•Spirit Animal/Power Animal/Spirit Guide: Native American term for an animal spirit that aids you and teaches you. Same as above. Do not use this term unless you are an involved member of this culture. Use ‘animal teacher’, ‘patronus’, ‘familiar’ ‘inner animal’ or ‘animal helper’. Remember, you can have native blood, but that doesn’t make you Native American. You must actually be involved and accepted by your tribe, spiritually and legally.

I would like to add that like many religions that exist, they were created and evolved from religions that already exist. I agree that people should understand karma before they talk about it. And I understand not saying gypsy because it can be seen as a slur. But my coven required me to be trained in smudging and I had to do meditations to learn my totem animals and I'm training to be a reiki Master (I work with chakras). We live in an amazing melting pot of a world where we can learn about these things without being restricted to just one. I find huge passion in Hindi and Native American cultures, why should I be told that I'm not allowed to use the terms that I've spent years learning about and experiencing just because I wasn't born into the culture. Everyone's path is different, as long as we aren't hurting others what's the problem? By saying we aren't allowed to use these phrases you're saying that if you're not born into these cultures you shouldn't be able to learn about them. Not being able to talk about them breeds as much ignorance as allowing people to talk about them incorrectly. You can simply correct people when you hear them misused. Please be kind to others! This seems so simple, but somehow there are so many other white witches who refuse/fail to grasp the concept of initiatory or “closed” traditions. 

It’s like a house. You always knock on the door. Some houses will let you in. Some will not. Some will let you in to the living room and offer help for a fee. Some don’t even have a front door and the entire house is public domain. Some will let you in as a guest for as long as you like but you are never allowed to go into the bedroom or the attic. Some will check the peephole and tell you to go away or not answer the door at all.

Catch my drift? But regardless of what you want, what you think, what you believe you are somehow entitled to - ***it is not your house***.

Facebook friends. I haven’t been here long but I’ve been on facebook for a while. Around this time every year I do a sort of “spring cleaning” with my friends list. I’m a little addicted to unfriending people. I’ve felt bad about it always, because I still genuinely love all of them. There is no person I’ve met that’s had zero impact and left my life without my love. I may not have been the closest with everyone, hence deleting, but they were important. I don’t see a reason though to keep people on my friends list that I know I won’t continuously try to talk to. My friends list now is for the people in my current stage of life. I need to weed people out to focus on who is here for me now and who I am here for now. It gets painful sometimes and if people I moved away from are still commenting on things I’m doing they count as present. This has made me feel like a bad person for a bit, but I was just reminded of someone a little bit ago, so I looked her up again. She has pictures with her current friends and is writing statuses that are most likely inside jokes with the current people in her life, just as I do. I’m not the only one that’s moved on. I hold all friends very dearly. No matter how often I talk to them. Sometimes that break in updates is good. There is no drama in the drifting from friends that I do, I don’t unfriend someone until there has been significant space between us for a while and I still love them. I love you all: Past, present, and future friends.

Even though I feel a visceral connection to my practice I don't wear a Pentacle because I'm new and many seem to scorn new Witches for outwardly expressing our alignment with the Goddess and God, as if we have to "earn" our expressiveness by proving our dedication somehow. I want to wear a Pentacle- I think it would be immensely empowering, but I don't want to seem foolish. What are your thoughts? Can I go for it without self-doubt? Is there really a way to earn it or a proper timeframe? Thanks!

Go for it! You don’t have to ‘earn’ the right to wear a pentacle, and anyone who tells you that you do is completely ridiculous. You won’t be foolish at all, I promise. If some more ‘experienced’ witch is scornful of your Goddess worship it’s because of their own insecurities over claiming some weird sort of ownership over Wicca. It’s not a competition and it never will be. You are worth just as much as someone who has been practising for 5 years, or 10, or 20. :)

This is something I wish didn't need to be asked. No path had more value than another, so why would people of a similar path demand newer people to "earn" the right to things? If someone finds a symbol and strength in that symbol at that time. That is when they should wear it. The knowledge from your path can be used as advice, but not to judge or condemn. I've been identifying as Wiccan for 7 years and I've been attracted to many symbols over that time, the strength I receive from them has never relied on approval from others. Practice what feels right to you. )0(
