I was reading abt the history of hanging and I had a thought:

Ppl who today say they support the death penalty but crow about how it ought to be "reformed" are a very, very good illustration of the problems with centrism in general and American so-called progressivism in particular. It's like this:

Execution by gas chamber or lethal injection are both slow, agonizing ways to die. Botched executions where ppl lie there writhing in agony for multiple hours before dying are common here in the US. Very common.

Long-drop hanging and decapitation, both of which cause near-instantaneous death when conducted even sort of correctly, are generally derided as primitive, barbaric, inhumane, etc; their abolition and replacement with the above methods is seen by most people as an enlightened and humanitarian development.

So what we're looking at here are people who (1) think that subjecting people to a full afternoon of incompetent torture-murder is the humane choice and (2) think that just not killing these guys and doing literally anything else with them instead would be "too extreme." How can we make that make sense?

It's very simple: They no longer have to look at it, therefore it no longer exists to them. The only real, meaningful change is that it's ceased to be an unsightly and embarassing public spectacle. The fact that the black work is being done behind the closed doors of an institution where they don't have to see it and therefore don't have to think about it is for them the entirety of the issue.
