anyway here are my doug headcannons #yay
. this is my big Thought okay. I think that one of the main reasons he was the way he was is because, due to factors like the flashback of him getting the shit beat out of him + that old guy that there was no explanation for but it was pretty clear something weird was going on + lack of parental guidance, a lot of the stuff he said or did was him sort of regurgitating things that had been said or done to him. the homophobia especially- all the stuff those bullies said to him? sounded a hell of a lot like stuff he was saying to arnie.
. and since those bullies hurt him, too, and I guess he was a hurt people hurt people kind of guy, and arnie was just who he chose to take it out on.
. as well as with the lack of parenting thing, I believe that's one of the main reasons he needed to have porky and eddie and hinge and Shelly and them all under his thumb the way he did, because he wanted someone (or someones, plural) attention on him. he wanted to feel like someone gave a shit about him.
. also one of the reasons I think he was always leaning on one of them and was typically pretty physically close with his friends, because he never had anyone to be close to growing up.
. also the awful shit he said to shelly's mom I felt like was some regurgitated version of something said to him, maybe by those bullies he killed or maybe by the old guy
. this one is just an idea of mine, since all we know for sure is that his parents weren't around, but my personal thought is that one of them either left or died and the other stuck around and drowned themself in substances (like arnie's mom) but to the point that they were hardly ever even conscious enough to care for their child
. and thats when I believe doug turned tobiblical stuff, because if no one else loved him and he didn't yet have his little clique, then at least god loved him.
. like maybe he went to like,, a local church for a food drive or something so he could, yknow, eat since clearly he was being neglected athome (if he even had a home at the time) and maybe someone there gave him a bible along with his meal
. I also think he got pretty fucking into the god of the old testament, the angry one who sent the plagues and killed thousands and he thought 'if only my violence is blessed by God, then I can go through with it.' and so before he killed all the guys who bullied him, he would pray aloud and have each member of his group do something like kneel with him as he asked for god to bless this next murder.
. having god was like his safety crutch, since he never knew if anyone in his clique would up and leave him. he did have them pretty wrapped around his finger, and I imagine he did that through some sort of preaching or display of power that they oohed and awed at. or maybe white boys or just really susceptible to manipulation I dunno
. correct me if I'm wrong, but he seemed to be living with that rich old creep guy. which, I would guess he made the mutual arrangement of food and shelter with in exchange for his body, so that old guy can actually eat shit and die
. and of course he had crazy fucking internalized homophobia so calling arnie a fag was his way of coping with the fact that he had done far faggier stuff to keep himself from starving to death in the streets
. I honestly do not think he cared about shelly, but thats pretty fucking obvious. in my opinion I think he just wanted a pretty girl to establish that he could, to like,, prove to himself masculinity or some bs.
. he killed that rabbit so easily I think because as a kid he would sometimes have to kill small animals to eat them because ,,like, no food. so he got used to taking the life of something innocent , and when he was tired of shelly he probably knew she cared about that rabbit and so he figured killing it would scare her off .
