Well, your mother and I obviously had our problems, right? And you-you got to see that. So that means that you’re in a much better spot than we were.‘Cause you understand. You know, you know that it takes work, and you know what happens if you don’t put that work in. You gotta work at it. If you want, I’ll go downstairs, I’ll tell everybody to beat it. But I think that that would be a mistake because this is a very good thing you guys got. He is a good kid. And you’re you. The best. And I like him a lot, except for the fact that he took you away from me, but other than that, I think he’s good.

Out Of The Past
gracefacemonkey:
Grace watched the man as he settled into a chair. He had offered to order her dinner or even watch television and if it had been any other time or place she may have accepted. “I want to go home!” was her only response to the man.
Of course he didn’t seem bothered by her answer. He simply shrugged and continued to work on the laptop that he kept on the top of the small table. If she could get to that computer, then maybe she could send Danno a message…..
She had no clue where her phone was, nor the rest of her belongings. All she had were the clothes on her back and no means of escape. The hours ticked by, Peterson making a few hushed phone calls on a small phone. It was old school by the looks of it. One of those flip phones that she knew were usually designated as burner phones. Untraceable.
Grace had remained on the floor, refusing to get on the bed or follow any of the man’s instructions. But after several hours the fatigue and whatever drugs were still floating around in her system, it all caught up with her and she felt her eyes drift shut.
When she awoke again, it was to the sound of her captor. He was angry, his tone low and dangerous, “I don’t care what it takes. I want it done!”
He slammed the phone onto the table, causing Grace to jump. Peterson turned to face her, “Well, look who decided to wake up.”
He stood up, “You know, I have to give D credit. I never would have expected him to allow his precious Monkey to go away for a weekend without so much as a phone call to check in. Your father has gotten soft in his old age.”
Rick moved closer, “But it’s not problem. I can take care of that.”
Grace pressed her back against the wall as he loomed above her. She watched his hand slip into his pocket as he produced her phone.
“Up,” he clicked his fingers, gesturing for her to get off the floor. Grace simply stared, causing the man to curse before pocketing the phone again and reaching down to grab her arm, “I said UP!”
Peterson jerked her off the floor, causing her to cry to out as he wrenched her arm, “Here me out, little girl. You do what I say, when I say it. Are we clear?”
Grace nodded as he continued to twist on her arm, giving another turn as she cried out, “Yes! I promise!”
He released her arm and Grace cradled her wrist, shaking it as she tried to get the feeling to return to her hand. The man was staring at her again, making her skin crawl as he seemed to be studying her.
She moved back when he began to reach out for her and he grabbed her arm again. He leaned in, studying the necklace that hung around her throat. With a quick tug he snapped the clasp, pulling it free and pushing her back.
Grace stumbled, barely managing to keep herself upright, “What do you want with that?” She rubbed her neck, already missing the locket. It had been a gift from her Uncle Steve. It was a sterling silver pendant with a Hawaiian flower and the word Ohana inscribed on it.
Rick studied it, turning it over in his hand, “This will do.” He made another phone call before a knock at the door.
Grace felt her heart race for a moment, wondering if it was someone there to help her. Peterson must have sensed her mood change because he came at her with a pair of handcuffs, slipping one end to her wrist and the other to the metal post of the bed that was beside her. He pulled out a gun, aiming at her for a moment, “Not a word, are we clear?”
She nodded, all hope suddenly disappearing as her captor moved to answer the door. He handed off a small package that she had seen him slip her necklace in and Grace never got a look at the person on the other side. No doubt the other person was going to deliver the necklace to her Danno.
Rick moved back to the table, pulling some equipment from a duffle bag. She watched as he set up a camera on a tripod. Adjusting the focus and aiming it towards the bed.
Grace felt the fear twist in her gut as he moved towards her again, unlocking the handcuff and jerking her off the floor again. He pushed her onto the edge of the bed, facing the camera before pulling her hands behind her back and cuffing them together.
He pulled out a handkerchief and Grace tried to move her head away as he placed it in her mouth, tying it behind her head in a knot. She tried to speak, but all that managed to come out were muffled noises. She began to thrash around, trying to see if she could get free before she saw the hand coming down to her face.
The initial burn of the slap caused her eyes to water, her skin tingling as he gripped her chin roughly, “Enough of that!” He laughed, “You really are D’s kid, aren’t you?”
Rick stood back up, pulling a ski mask over his face before he turned on the camera to begin recording. Once the red light began to blink, Grace tried to speak, tried to find some way to convey who had her but she couldn’t. And she knew that was the whole point.
Peterson crawled on the bed behind her, staring into the lens as he brushed her hair to the side. He kissed her neck, making Grace cry out and tug against the restraints. A second later she felt her head being jerked back and another rough slap to her face.
Over and over again he did this. One gentle touch, followed by a brutal blow. Grace did her best to anticipate each strike but he didn’t have a rhythm, never timed them the same. Each one startling her as though it was the first time. She closed her eyes as the tears began to stream down her face, praying that it would all be over soon.
He didn’t need an ounce of caffeine to keep him running, pure adrenaline by fear keeping him wide awake as he paced headquarters, made phone calls, scoured every contact he had for some word of his daughter. With every dead end, his gut twisted, to the point where he found himself in the bathroom once, on his knees before the toilet with his breakfast making a return visit. Thankfully, after a few deep breaths, it returned to where it belonged and he strode back into the main area, demanding updates as if he’d been gone hours instead of minutes at the most.
Jerry. Jesus, he was going to owe Jerry a lot of apologies or at least a few meals from Kamekona’s or some new equipment when this was over. He was certainly trying his best but each wall he ran up against, Danny felt his frustration rising and commands came out shorter, angrier. Jerry was doing his best and didn’t deserve Danny’s ire but he knew the statistics. When it came to kidnapping, the more time that passed, the smaller the chances that.
No. He wouldn’t let his mind wander down that path. Grace would be fine, it would be a minor thing. Not like last time, his little girl’s face streaked with grime and tears, her small body shaking as he held her tightly, trying to reassure her that he would never let this happen again.
But he had.
“I just need something,” he begged softly, but to who he wasn’t sure. He had his arguments with religion and faith, too much having happened to put him in good terms with a deity he could neither see nor hear with his own senses. But if it brought Grace back to him, he’d drop to his knees, attend service every Sunday, go to confession.
He caught Jerry looking his way and shook his head hard, as if to clear it. “I’ve got my phone, call me if you hear anything,” he commanded, striding for the lobby. He couldn’t stay around headquarters, not when the rest of the team was out there, looking. They thought it’d be better if he stayed around, especially after he’d nearly taken the head off a CI, but
He just couldn’t.
Danny strode out into the bright Hawaiian sunlight, latching his fingers behind his head up as he strode across the parking lot, heading for his car. He only started to slow when he saw the small box sitting on the hood of his car. No, in his line of work, a mysterious box in the absence of his daughter, it was never a good sign.
With shaking hands, he reached out and slowly took the lid off the white box to see the silver necklace tucked inside. He remembered the day Grace received it from Steve, her birthday. How she immediately put it on.
He slammed the lid back on, spinning around to look, searching every corner of the parking lot. Then he began to run, anger infusing him with a fresh burst of adrenaline.
When Grace was little, she discovered she had a special talent. One that horrified her mother to no end and amused her father. She was double jointed. A trait that apparently ran in the Williams side of the family.
Through the years it had helped her with gymnastics and cheer, allowing her to slide to the floor for splits with ease. To perform backwards flips and slip through the uneven bars without issue.
It also allowed her to perform one very special trick that her Danno taught her. The Jersey Slip. She could still recall the day he told her about it, the twinkle in his eye as he dangled a pair of handcuffs before her face and told her she held an amazing talent.
Because of her loose joints she could slip out of any pair of handcuffs if the situation ever required it. Of course Danno gave her the usual spiel about not being in handcuffs to begin with, but if the situation ever arose....
And now, it’s all Grace could focus on as tried to focus on her hands. It didn’t mean it would be easy, or painless. No, Rick Peterson had made sure to tighten the cuffs, the metal digging into her flesh as she worked to move her thumb out of it’s usual joint position.
It hurt like hell, but so did the endless series of slaps across her face. She could hear her heart beating in her ears as she tried to focus on the task at hand. He was talking, whispering something against her face, but Grace couldn’t focus on his words. Between the fear and pain, Grace tried to remember the lessons her Danno had taught her. How to remain calm and most importantly, how to stay alive.
When she felt the buttons of her school blouse begin to release and his calloused hand slip inside her clothing, Grace cried out, thrashing as hard as she could. A new wave of fear washing over her as she tried to focus on the man’s words.
Rick chuckled, “My my, you have become such a sweet young thing, haven’t you? I bet the boys can’t keep their hands off you. I’m surprised D hasn’t landed himself in hot water trying to chase them away.”
The implications of what he might be planning were beginning to take hold of her mind, trying to paralyze her with a new fear that she was going to be raped or worse.
Grace let out a sob as he began to grope her chest, still trying to remain calm as she redoubled her efforts to try and free her wrist from the handcuffs. She felt her thumb pop back, slipping down and to the inside, allowing enough clearance for the shackle to slide over her hand.
The metal cuff scraped over her flesh, burning as it cut into her skin, but Grace used the pain to remain focused and to keep her mind off what Rick Peterson was trying to do to her body. Instead she focused on her anger, allowed the rage to take hold.
She felt something wet and warm trailing down her fingers and she realized her hand was bleeding where the cuff had moved over the base of her wrist. It was a gift in disguise as the blood helped to lubricate the metal cuff and make it easier to slip across the rest of her hand.
Once her hand was finally free, Grace was careful not to let on. She could hear Danno’s voice in her mind, she needed a plan. He was still bigger, stronger, and faster than she was. He could overpower her quickly. No, she needed an advantage. Something that would give her the upper hand.
Grace remembered the pocket knife he had wielded earlier. It was laying on the table with the camera. It was her only option. She closed her eyes, trying to visualize herself grabbing the knife, opening the small blade just like her Danno and Uncle Steve had taught her on the Aloha Girls campouts, and using it to stop Rick Peterson from hurting her any further.
His hand had begun to move lower, causing another wave of fear to wash over her. Grace took a deep, shuddering breath as she reared her elbow back, hitting the man in the chest. Peterson grunted and released his grip, stunned by the unexpected move.
Grace was up and moving towards the table. For a split second she considered simply fleeing, running for the door but something in her mind stopped her. No, she had to end this, now.
She grabbed the pocket knife, fumbling as it slipped between her bloody fingers. Her hands shook as she opened the blade and spun around to face her kidnapper.
Rick was on the move, having recovered from her previous blow and beginning to charge forward. Grace began her own charge as he moved to intercept the knife. He grabbed her wrist, twisting it harshly.
She cried out, determined not to loose her grip on her only defense. Her other hand curled into a fist as she reared back and swung. There was the satisfying crack of bone against bone as she made contact with his nose. It was enough to cause Rick to stumble backwards, loosing his grip on her wrist as he instinctively went to check his face.
Grace knew she didn’t have long before the man regained his senses and she surged forward, plunging the knife into the man’s chest. She froze, unable to move or breath as he stared back at her.
His eyes. They were full of shock and surprise for a moment before the anger reappeared and Peterson practically growled. Grace still had a grip on the handle of the knife, knowing it would take more to disable her attacker. She thrust deeper, twisting the blade before she pulled up.
It was a sound she never wanted to hear again, an anguished cry that was muffled by a gurgling sound as Rick stumbled backwards against the bed. Grace watched as the blood seeped through the man’s shirt, the stain spreading quickly as he slid against the edge of the mattress and onto the floor.
She jumped as she heard the door crash open, everything becoming a blur as the room filled with various people. Voices calling out to her as she began to shake. And then she heard it, the one voice she could make out above all others. Her eyes were filled with tears and hours of fatigue so she couldn't see clearly but she knew that voice. It was the one voice she had been praying for.
“DADDY!”
Strong arms enveloped her and Grace began to cry out in both pain and relief. It was over. Her Danno had found her.
Out Of The Past
Between Grace spending the weekend with a friend and Rachel’s time with Charlie, Danny was looking at a long weekend with not much to do. Sure, there was Steve or Lou, but Danny hesitated to interrupt any plans they may have just because he didn’t want to lurk around an empty house. He was an adult, fully capable of entertaining himself. There were books on the bedside table that he could start, TV he could watch, take his board and head out to the North Shore. He had plenty of options, but it didn’t motivate him out of his chair any faster when quitting time came.
He glanced at the phone sitting near his elbow, wondering if he should text Grace and see if she arrived at Riley’s house all right. At the same time, he could hear her exasperated sigh, telling her friend about her overbearing father. Overnight, she became a teenager, looking for a little more independence, and he was struggling to find the balance between constantly worried father and letting her have his space. The phone stayed in the air for a moment before he set it back down on the surface and leaned back, pushing a hand through his hair.
Yeah, he had to get out of there, find a way to distract himself. Give Grace some room to be a teenager.
Danny ended up falling asleep on the couch with ESPN playing quietly in the background, the remote resting on his chest. The work week caught up with him finally and he slept on and off through the night, waking up to do his usual restless wandering until he felt he’d paced off the unease enough to sleep, kicking off his pants and crawling into bed. He at least made it into bed that time, sleeping until dawn.
Later morning, book open on his lap as he slung his legs over the chair’s arm out on the back patio, cup of coffee in hand, he’d just become engrossed in the plot when his phone rang. He arched an eyebrow at Rachel’s number and hit SEND, holding the phone to his ear. “Yeah?”
“Danny, have you heard anything from Grace?”
He sat up, the book falling to the ground unnoticed, his heart starting to beat a little harder in his chest. “No, why? Rachel, what’s going on - “
“Riley called to say Grace didn’t make it last night. I’ve called Will, I’ve called her other friends, I just - her phone goes straight to voicemail, Danny. No one has seen her - “
The fear in her voice mirrored the fear in him, remembering all too well the last time Grace had disappeared. “Keep calling people,” he said, trying to keep his voice calm. “Anyone and everyone you can think of.” He didn’t mean to just hang up on her, at least not that time, but he had calls of his own to make.
Steve, Lou, not even Tani, Kono and Adam, Junior, Chin or Abby. They promised to call if they did, asked if he wanted any help. He told them he’d let them know, already pulling on a pair of pants, grabbing his gun, badge, keys, rushing to the door.
Once at headquarters, he leaned over the table, tapping Grace’s number into the program to track her phone. “C’mon, c’mon,” he whispered, only for the screen to come up blank. “C’mon, Gracie. C’mon, Monkey, where are you?” he whispered, his voice shaking as he stared at the topographic map of O’ahu on the screen above his head, void of any kind of marker. “Give me a sign, sweetheart.”
Grace watched the man as he settled into a chair. He had offered to order her dinner or even watch television and if it had been any other time or place she may have accepted. “I want to go home!” was her only response to the man.

Common Goals
He’s not ever really been that much of a people person. There’s more than one reason why his unit had called him Wrench, mind. But with new people it’s hard. And with kids? Even harder. Not because he’s afraid of them so much as simply…well he’s a little off kilter now–and kids are a lot like dogs. They can sense it. Or at least he thinks they can. So he usually steers clear of them. But it’s Danny’s weekend and…
Well Bastian had spent a good bit of time just leaned too against the counter in the kitchen. Watching Danny and Grace outside on the deck. Staying out of Steve’s way as he clangs pots and pans and does tail spins in the kitchen. Because Danny’s weekend means more than just Grace being around for two days. It means Steve and him…doing what they can to make sure Danny can maximize the time with his daughter.
Eventually though….Steve chases him out of the kitchen (more or less). And he’s got two options. The living room to stare at the TV or…outside. And whatever’s left of his confidence turns his feet. Has him finding a chair on the deck, watching the ocean in the distance. Listening to Danny trying to coach Grace on her foot work. And maybe there’s a little snort as blue drags over to watch the pair. Because as much as he loves the shorter male, Penguin’s spitting mostly bullshit.
Danno….does this look right to you?
That’s never good…. Keep working on passing the ball between your feet, Monkey. I’ll be right back.
And then rather all together suddenly….it’s just Bastian and Grace. The ten year old seventy-five pound tops dragon he’s been avoiding. But she doesn’t seem to notice him, so there is that. Moving the ball about in the yard and here it comes. Flying in the complete opposite direction from where she was clearly trying to kick it. Coming to a bouncing rest at Baz’s feet and….oh hell here he goes–Not so confident hands picking it up before he’s pulling himself out of the chair. A hitched step down off the deck and holding it out to her. Gaze kept on the ball more than her.
“Y’need t’hit it with t’back inside a’yer foot…not t’inside a yer toes. Toes r’meant f’passin’ not keepin’ it juggled n’away from yer competition.”
Because yeah it isn’t something he’s mentioned to her dad and Steve before. But there was a time back in high school when he hadn’t just watched futball. He’d played it too. And been on hell of a forward and defensive mid-fielder when the occasion called for it.
Grace always looked forward to the weekends with her Danno. She didn’t get to spend much time with him because of school and his job so it was always fun when she got to hang out with her Dad. And more often than not, it also meant spending some of that time at her Uncle Steve’s house. And that was even better. She loved getting to swim whenever she wanted and Uncle Steve always let her stay up late and read her an extra bedtime story.
At first Danno had seemed nervous about telling Grace how he and Uncle Steve were more than friends. But she had been so excited about having Uncle Steve part of her Ohana that Danno seemed to relax about it. Also, Grace knew how much they loved each other, he looked at Uncle Steve the way he used to look at Mom. But it was even more. And they seemed so happy together that she couldn‘t help but be excited for them.
And lately there was this other guy there. Grace had first thought he was a friend of Uncle Steve’s. But over time she began to realize it was more than that. He didn’t say much to her, but it was clear he was important to her Dad’s.
Over time she began to realize he was part of their relationship. At first she was confused. She didn’t have a problem with her Danno loving a man. But two men? That seemed strange. But if her Danno and Uncle Steve loved him then he had to be a good guy and that was good enough for Grace.
Another weekend had come around and Grace was busy trying to practice for the soccer team. She wanted to be ready for try outs and her Dad was working to help her learn to move the ball.
“Danno, does this look right to you?” Grace asked as she kicked the ball with one foot, watching it roll much further than she expected. She moved quickly to compensate, trying to keep the ball from rolling away from her.
He told her to keep passing the ball and that he’d be right back. Grace nodded, trying to focus on keeping the ball under control. She was surprised when she heard the other man approach her.
She looked up, slightly confused as she took in his words. She looked back down at her feet and focused on knocking the ball with the back part of her foot. The truth was she had been trying to kick with her toes.
The difference was remarkable and Grace’s eyes lit up as the ball drifted between her feet, just like she’d wanted, “Thanks, Mr. Bastian!” She looked back down and continued to practice her newfound skill, “Do you play soccer? Could you show me some other moves?”

@jerseysass
Grace was looking forward to the weekend. After a long week of schoolwork and cheer leading practice she was ready to have some fun. She had made plans to spend the entire weekend at her friend Riley’s house. Staying up late, watching movies, dancing, and having fun.
Mom had been okay with her going and even Danno seemed to go along with it since it gave her and Will a “much needed break”. Of course that wouldn’t stop her texting and talking to him but if it gave her Dad some piece of mind then she was all for it.
Once the final bell rang, Grace stowed her book bag in her locker and grabbed her overnight bag. Riley didn’t live far from the school and the walk was good exercise. The only issue was that Riley didn’t have class the period of the day so she had left early to go home and get things ready for the two of them.
But Grace didn’t mind the walk alone as she grabbed her earbuds and slipped them in place. Once she had her playlist pulled up she waved goodbye to Will and her other friends to head over to her friend’s house.
It was a beautiful day and Grace was busy singing along to one of her favorite songs when a car pulled up behind her. She didn’t hear it approach. Never saw who grabbed her, only a pair of hands and a needle prick to her throat. It was the last thing she remembered before succumbing to the darkness.
When she came around again, her head was pounding. A wave of nausea washed over her and she began to cough, dry heaving as she tried to sit up. Her entire body ached and she was so sleepy.
Once she was able to open her eyes and focus she surveyed the room. It was dimly lit and sparsely furnished, a simple table and chair along with a bed. She didn’t see any windows either. Only one door and it appeared to be bolted shut.
“Oh good, you’re awake.”
Grace jumped as she heard a man’s voice. Startled that someone was in the room with her and she hadn’t noticed. But that voice..... there was something familiar about it.
He moved from the shadows and Grace gasped as she instantly recognized the man. He was older, but she would never forget him. Never forget how he betrayed her or her Danno.
“You remember me?” he cocked his head as though he was trying to read her thoughts.
Grace nodded, unable to speak, paralyzed by her own fear.
A slow grin spread across his face, causing Grace’s stomach to twist even tighter. She tried to keep her voice even as she spoke, “Ri- Rick Peterson.”
So here’s the thing....
Grace is totally giving me the stink face right now but I have an angsty plot idea that I want to throw out there.
Current canon setting. But Rick Peterson gets out of jail (escapes most likely, I doubt he’d get early release, Danny wouldn’t have it) and still has it out for Danny.
He comes after Grace, kidnaps her again, only this time because she’s a teenager no one knows she’s missing at first. They think she’s over at a friend’s house at a sleepover or something.
And the angst ensues.... only this time he ends up dead and Grace even fights back.
Anyone want to jump in on this?
Or am I just too horrible for words?
