Fire Emblem Engage has paradoxical depths. Schrödinger’s depth.
On one hand, the maps are very well designed, and the gameplay is very good. There’s tons of little details that add to the love for previous entries — Engage being a 30 year anniversary entry — such as how Lucina’s super has the final hit freeze motion exactly like killing blows did on bosses in Awakening, or how Leif gets a myriad of weapon types and his passive is auto-equipping the best counter to your attacker’s weapon because in Genealogy he is one of two playable (and the only one of his half of the story) Master Knights, who can just wield every weapon type (except Lopto if you consider that a type). The class system is something I enjoy as well, it’s streamlined in a way I think is good, with every class having an integrated ‘type’ like Backup, Armored, Qi Adept, etc, as well as a degree of selectable variance on promotion: Your Sword Fighter can become a Hero that uses Swords and Axes, or Swords and Lances, for example. The balance of combat roles is also very polished: Armored units are true physical juggernauts, even generic Armored enemies, and must be dealt with either specialty weapons (Hammer, Armorslayer, et al), or magic, or it’s an uphill battle. I personally like the way the Weapon Triangle works now, being predominantly a very offensive tool that allows big plays, but that also punishes you if you’re not attentive.
On the other hand, the presence of ‘Emblems’ — spirits of previous games’ characters — is otherwise merely superficial and fanservice that doesn’t really amount to much nor is it worked with to anywhere near its full potential. There’s no personality showcased in the slightest, and they all sound the same: Generically supportive, “trust in your friends”, and otherwise bog standard heroic. This is especially frustrating when you have a character as fun and vivid as Yunaka paired with Radiant Dawn’s Micaiah, who is very spicy back in her home game but is just a generic supportive cute girl in here. I understand and can excuse this (to some degree) being the way with characters like Marth or Sigurd, who didn’t have much character development or characterization back in their original games in the first place, but Celica, Micaiah, and even Roy, those from more modern games, really have no reason to just be as generic as portrayed. Supports (and Bonds, which are Supports with Emblems) are so bare bones and bland that they are not even worth talking about. The story is simple to the point of just being an engine for the gameplay (it’s like I’m really playing an old Fire Emblem!) and, while certain characters are fun, you overall have a pretty generic fantasy ensemble to work with. More than just a bit disappointing! The main character in particular is a huge nothingburger, unfortunately, following in the steps of Three Houses, and making me want to go play Echoes once more so I can feel something again from Alm, Celica, and the rest of that cast.
Overall, yeah, good game, but I don’t think I can call it a good Fire Emblem.
What kind of characterization and writing makes a good Fire Emblem game? I'm glad the combat and maps are a highlight (I'm remembering just hitting auto battle on several 3H maps), but I don't think I've gone into a fire emblem game expecting anything more than a good vs evil plot with a family member's death helping motivate the protagonist.
Fundamentally, most Fire Emblem games follow the same blueprint: Bad Guys start doing That Bad Shit with the power of darkness or by perverting a good power into a power of darkness, this usually poses some duress to our main character, who tends to be a victim of this, usually via Dead Parent, and who then goes “Hey! You cunts quit that right now!” and that’s our Good Guy. Good Guy grabs whatever dudes and dudettes are at hand to become the Good Guys and they go on either a war path or an adventure throughout the land to get Allies en route to Beating Evil Up.
This much is true. That doesn’t mean every journey towards this destination is the same.
Let me take Fire Emblem Awakening as an example: The plot, as a whole, is very simple, but the journey in itself has personality. If you look at everything in terms of plot summary, yeah, Awakening has a mind-numbingly simple plot, but when you go through the play-by-play, it becomes the adventure of this Big Fun Musclehead Chrom and his bestie (and possibly lover) Robin who is like “hey Chrom wouldn’t it be funny if we grab out ships and set them on fire and ram them at the enemy armada?” and Chrom is like “BET” and then they do that and it’s silly, it’s fun, it’s over the top when it needs to be, so yeah sure it’s still fundamentally “The Valiant King And His Friends Defeat An Ambitious Emperor” but that misses the part where the Valiant King and his bestie set their own fucking car on fire to cause untold amounts of property damage as a key move to accomplish this.
You can have an archetypical premise and still do so much with it, you can have a concept that’s simple as it comes and still make it have so much personality and have it have memorable high spots that in the end it ends up being charming and well-regarded, the way Awakening is. Sure, Fire Emblem Awakening is piss easy, the single easiest game except maybe Birthright, but it’s a fun game remembered not for its grueling gameplay challenges (or lack thereof), but rather, because it dared play with its journey, and it had a lot of memorable support convos between characters, where they turned up the skit humor to 10, as well as having something with meat for everyone, be it wholesome moments, memeable content, and everything in between, with its myriad supports.
I also like to point at Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. The cast in Path of Radiance is good, Ike is a pretty fun dude to follow, makes some good jabs, meets some Funny People like my boy Reyson, the Most Beautiful Bird Man Alive whose first on-screen action is to punch Oliver in the nose
and then completely subvert his delicate looks further by just kinda being a bro who wants to punch more, or my girl Micaiah, who is so damn done with her man’s Sothe’s constant hero worship of Ike that she dunks on him with
and reminds us that (at this point) her first reaction to seeing him would be to take the chain off of her bike and beat him to death with it in a back alley (for a very understandable plot reason, but that’d be digressing).
Point is, you definitely can have fun, interesting, and memorable characterization and writing even in a simple blueprint of “the Good Guys go to beat the Bad Guys” if you’re not a coward.
Today I learned Splatoon Raiders costs $50-60 USD and Fortune's Weave costs $70-80 -- THE SAME PRICE AS GTA 6
I hope fw flops like hell and intelligent systems has to re-release Awakening on the S2 to save their bank account
