A huge fish. A huge fish. Ffffuck.
If there are people talking about a huge fish, then there must be something actually huge in there, or no one would have been talking about it in town. Now, if it was an actual fish? Debatable, very. Huge for sure, a fish? He can only hope. Based on the sounds he kept hearing during the latest nights, he wouldn't hope too hard, though. Those were absolutely not the sound of a fish.
… so they were real sounds, huh. Fuck. Fuck. He, uh… he thought he was hallucinating. Or drunk. Or both. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck. Is this guy known in town? John never saw him, but then again he never goes in town to begin with, if not to get absolutely wasted in alcohol before staggering back to his life as a hermit in a farm he barely looks at. Would anyone notice if this boy was to disappear…? It's not like it has to happen, of course, m-maybe nothing will happen at all. … Fuck. For all he knows, he's going to see the other one getting eaten alive. Five minutes are well enough for something like that to happen. Fuck. Fuck how does he justify this, fffffuck fuck fuck–
« Mh-mh. » In and out before he can say sea bass? Oh, that's for sure. The cigarette hangs between his lips, smoke puffing in and out almost constantly in a fit of anxiety, like a chimney in winter. His hands force their way in the pants’ pockets to stop torturing each other, and he keeps pacing through his property without even giving a look at the boy. It doesn't take them long to reach the pond - the farm is quite small compared to the others around the town - half hidden in the tall grass and the few spiraling trees surrounding it. Traces of the summoning ritual are still there, half burned and unrecognizable if not by the eye of who created them in the first place.
John throws a concerned, furtive glance at them. He can't even recognize the symbols his own hand traced. Fffffffuck.
« ... ‘ere, uh... ‘ere we go, lad. » He waves dismissively at the pond, not giving it nor at the boy a look, focused instead around them in the attempt to recognize... s-something. A missing symbol, a trace, anything. He finds instead a void chicken pecking at an abandoned paper with faded lines drawn on it ( he swears, if that's the symbol he needed...! ), and instinctually picks both of them up. There, he finally turns to the other, the polar opposite of a calm person. « Five minutes. 'ave fun. »
Here we gooo. Once again fixing the pole better on his shoulders, Cale quietly followed the mysterious farmer, looking around with badly hidden curiosity at every chicken ( because that's what it is, as far as he knows: a particularly big black chicken, and nothing else ) and piece of burnt grass ( mentally commentaing that the guy should be more careful where he puts his cigarette butts, clearly ), tilting his head on the side at the... tension? He seems tense. The farmer guy.
Guess he's not used to visitors.
Wonder whyyyy. Hah. Not his problem.
Giving a thumbs up, Cale decides that it isn't his problem. He's there to catch a big fish, and he has a time limit. By the time they reached the pond, he already quickly put on the first bait he could grab from his bags on the hook, setting down and giving a thumbs up.
"Yeah yeah, I'tll take uhhh. Four.", he gives a thumbs up, casting the hook... and taking a deep breath. And now. We wait.
"...hey, by the way. If you need someone to clean up the grass, I'm quick with that?" he breaks the silene before it could get awkward, figuring he might as well shoot his shots to try and get a couple more bucks out of this "Last week I did that for Demetrius, it's just fifty-- -AUGH!"
Nevermind that!! Something bit, something BIG enough to make him almost fall forward and lose the grip. He takes a step forward, pulling in his well deserved prize and almost sliding forward everytime the beast fights back, teeth gritted in a determined grin until he takes one last pull and a GIANT GODDAMN SHARK WITH CRAB-LIKE LEGS COME OUT OF IT, thrown out of the pond with the momentum and landing with its stomach up. Still alive. Still clearly breathing, in ways a shark shouldn't. Making him blink once. Twice. And then-
"What the FUCK is that?!"

Ah, and now he's annoyed. It's so evident to make John roll his eyes with just as much annoyance, before taking advantage of the hand rising to massage his forehead to take the cigarette between the fingers. Alright, this is going to be longer than he wanted to, great. As if the boy didn't take enough time already.
« This is not Pelican Town, dude. » he groans, waving the same hand in a circle in front of himself to underline the place. « This is my propriety, and is outside of Pelican Town. And I do the fuck I want with it, yeah? » If he wants his place to look like a dumpster on fire, then a dumpster on fire it will be! What's so difficult to understand for that guy? Or everyone, really? He's not the first one who told him about it - though others had been a bit nicer, offering more than anything a hand to clean the place. He made an effort to be nice in return and simply denied the help, but maybe he should have been the usual asshole that he's so good at. Maybe that would have kept people away better.
He sighs, expecting yet again a complaint of some sort, and receiving a groan ( absolutely expected ) and... ... an apology? He can't control himself from showing pure surprise at the words. It's so unusual for him to hear someone asking him sorry - a genuine sorry, one that wasn't extorted by using guilt against them, something he's so awfully competent at. It makes him stop with his protest, staring at him with his eyebrows lifted; then, shortly, with a frown, habit making him suddenly paranoid about the sudden change. And then again his expression changes, to show genuine confusion.
« A huge fish? » he repeats. « What are you talking abo-- ah. The. The fish. » Ah, wait. Wait, he might be talking about that... thing. The one he summoned one evening while he was completely drunk and out of his mind. ... s-so he actually did it. He thought he prepared the ritual and then fell asleep before actually completing it. That's... g-good to know.
« Mhh. » He brings the cigarette to his lips, taking in a deep breath of smoke, staring at the other with a somewhat worried gaze - and not worried about that guy. Fuck, he can't even remember what exactly he summoned. He didn't even use a book, he just went for it. Five minutes, the guy asks. Just five minutes. ... what can possibly happen in just five minutes? Right? « No... no need. ». He puffs the smoke out, and immediately takes another breath in. And then turns to start moving. « Sure. Okay. Five minutes. Come with me. »
Okay, bracing for a hard no. Maybe getting quite literally kicked out. Maybe, if the rumors are true, get turned into a frog. Come on. Here we go. Let's just get this over--
"...huh?"
--oh. He's... okay with it? Without even realizing he raised his shoulders in tension, Cale visibly relaxes, lifing his eyebrows.
"Oh. Okay.
Coolio."
He's acting way too chill for someone who's suddenly shaking in excitement. Fixing the rod on his back, he starts bumping up and down.
"After you, then. I'll be in and out before you could say sea bass."

MY CHARACTER(S)
name: Rosanna Magnabosco, "Roxie" age: 32 gender & pronouns: cis woman, she/her romantic & sexual orientation: lesbian
Cetus was rubbing her head, that definitely would leave a mark and she wondered if a horse kick would have hurt less than that. Unlikely. Still.
She looked at the other feeling her cheeks get red at the attempts of holding back a laughter.
— No, not too much. Although... — The brunette replied. — I could swear I saw stars, like the video games ones you know?
"Nooo, you too??? I see them too sometimes!
Even if it's mostly birds, lately.", Roxie muttered after a few secoinds, hear head tilted on one side, a finger tapping on her chin "Mostly chickens? I've been trying to get a brown one for a while, so I guess that's why I'm straight up imagining them when I--"
A blink. A clearing of her throat. She's getting lost in her thoughts.
"Uhm, still! My farm is nearby, if you need some ice or-- something?"
Why does people keep coming in his farm is seriously beyond him. He thought it was clear enough from the presentation that he doesn't appreciate guests, especially the unwanted ones - and everyone is unwanted, to be honest -, with the gate always closed and locked, and the tall grass everywhere, and his house isolated at the opposite side of the road. He only misses the comical "Stay away!" signs Shrek-style, which he didn't think he needed. And yet, sometimes there they go, the little surprises. Ruining a perfectly calm day by sneaking into his property. Maybe he should make those signs, after all.
At his first reply, John is already about to simply throw him out with a force spell - he knows less harmful spells for sure, but maybe a bit of blood will strike the fear of God (or, well, of the grumpy weird man of the neighborhood farm) in anyone who wants to repeat the experience of this guy -, but how he continues makes an expression of amused disbelief appear on his face.
« You could say that? Are you fucking serious? » he asks, the words slightly lowered by the cigarette hanging from one corner of his mouth. He doesn't have an angry tone; more than anything, it seems a mixture of surprise and a lot of weariness. « I don't recall calling you here, love. If you didn't want the ticks, you shouldn't have come here. Now go call my place a dump out of here, will ye? »
…love? Cale couldn't keep in a rather confused-slash-annoyed groan at that. Okay. Guess we're doing this today.
"Dude, Pelican Town is already a mess as it is. You could at least try to not make it worse.
I'm just saying!"
Fixing the fishing rod on his shoulders, he let silence fall for a few seconds before groaning.
"Look. I'm sorry, okay? I was told there's some sort of huge fish in that place over there, and I wanted to check it out. Either that or some Joja Cola cans that came to life, I guess."
A shift of his weight from a foot to another later, he just. Lowers his gaze. Sighing.
"Just five minutes. I'll be out of here as soon as I finish my good baits. I can pay ya if you want."
[ funny farmer sim picrew yay ]
— No... I was looking for the blacksmith.
Well, lost was an overstatement but he still didn't see why the other needed to be too rude. Maybe was a bad day, no matter.
— Also I heard there is a festival coming up in the next few day.... do you know anything about that?
Oh. Wait. He was right, actually? Fun.
"Heee's… uhh." turning a little more, Cale pointed forward "Go back to town, find a bridge. If you see the Joja place just go down, can't miss it.
As for the festival, uhh."
...how could he sell the Egg Festival to a tourist?? Arguably the stupidest festival in town???? One that just the kids, Abigail and that weird big woman farmer seem to like???
"...I mean if you like eggs it's not half bad?"
‒‒‒‒‒‒‒‒‒ The slime bite hurt, that was true, but Roxie making a big panic about it wasn't helping them. They *needed* her to calm down so she could help them out of the mines.
What were they even doing in the mines, anyway? They didn't exactly make much money at the Stardrop, and the ore and gems inside the mines was too good to pass up. Some copper ore and a couple of amethysts would bag them a weeks worth of pay in just a day.
"Are you out of your mind? We're not cutting anything and I'm *not* turning into a slime! Slimes aren't zombies!" They sighed-- her emotions starting to work them up as well, they needed to calm down. Inhale, exhale.
"Look, if you can get me to the elevator, I can get to the Adventurer's guild on my own, and Marlon and Gil can take it from there, yeah? Whaddya say?"
"W-Well--!"
Stumbling on her own words, Roxie forced herself to take a quick, yet deep breath. She knew that wouldn't happen. After being mawled by them over and over, she should've known.
"You-you never know!"
But after reading so many stories about legendary fishes that appear on very specific occasions and children transformed into birds by witches, could anyone blame the farmer for being a little concerned? They're right, tho: if there was anyone in Pelican Town who knew how to treat possible Slimefication, it's Gil.
"Yeah, uhhhhh. Should be close enough, so, uh. You-- can you walk? Or do you need help? I can lift you up if you need?"
