LAGAN - Work in Progress.
As this LAGAN project is so personal to me I look forward to embracing it as a potential job in the future and look to keep promoting it and progressing through the design and branding process in the future with the aim of building the idea into a real life tangible outcome. Just because its the end of uni doesn't mean its the end for Lagan.
Here is a kind of lifstyle photo if you will to reflect the type of branding I would like to go for throughout the promotional materials for the project. Like the way Sitka approach there videos which I like very much. https://vimeo.com/33234007
So i mocked up my logo on this book template to try out an idea I had in mind using both the rectangle logo and the branding element from the other logo I liked and I think it works well both compositionally, to balance the design and I think it will give the brand a stronger identity as the patterns hold connotations of the sea, nature and ultimately the spirit of the brand.
After considering the similarity's between my personal logo and that of the LAGAN brand mock ups that I liked I went for this compromise. I think its modern, bold and has a trustworthy and nostalgic feel through the muted blue colour scheme.
LAGAN logo ideas - Inkeeping with the nautical theme and playing on the natural aspect of the brand. Bold and muted colour schemes. I like the bottom left as it has a pattern that could be transferred throughout the brand.
I do like the bottom rights contrasting text theme however I think it may be a bit close to the branding I have created for myself... maybe change the shape?
Press and Journal Article.
"Students inspired by role models Published: 05/04/2013 Students Dawid Jaskiewicz, left, and Grant Anderson It’s a widely held belief that students with an entrepreneurial flair require encouragement and inspiration to take their ideas forward if they are to fulfil their potential and form a vital part of Scotland’s continued economic development.
For two students at Robert Gordon University (RGU), the opportunity to listen to the executive chairman of one of Scotland’s most successful global energy businesses has given them renewed drive to achieve their ambitions. Grant Anderson, who studies visual communication at RGU’s Gray’s School of Art, and marketing management student Dawid Jaskiewicz, heard from Roy MacGregor OBE, founder of Global Energy Group, at the 2013 Absoft Entrepreneurship Lecture among a packed audience at RGU’s Aberdeen Business School." For the full story, pick up a copy of today’s Press and Journal or read our digital edition now. Its really great to get this sort of exposure through the local media. Makes me feel better about not getting through to the next round as my efforts were not in vain.
Brand name - LAGAN
It was a tough decision in choosing the name for the brand as it needs to reflect every aspect of what you do and is often any consumers first point of contact with the brand. I have went for 'LAGAN' over 'FLOTSAM' as I feel that is essentially more relevant to the brand and what the brand does retaining the idea that our consumer waste is more temporarily discarded and salvageable rather than flotsam. "Flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo. Jetsam is part of a ship, its equipment, or its cargo that is purposefully cast overboard or jettisoned to lighten the load in time of distress and that sinks or is washed ashore. Lagan (also called ligan) is cargo that is lying on the bottom of the ocean, sometimes marked by a buoy, which can be reclaimed. Derelict is cargo that is also on the bottom of the ocean, but which no one has any hope of reclaiming." So no to create the LAGAN brand. I want it to reflect the ideals I hold within sustainable design and to adhere to a strict and uncompromising approach to environmental manufacture. The brand identity must be bold and in keeping with the brand values yet retaining a modern and 'streetwise' feel.
In maritime law, flotsam, jetsam, lagan and derelict describe specific kinds of wreck. The words have specific nautical meanings, with legal consequences in the law of admiralty and marine salvage.[1] Flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo. Jetsam is part of a ship, its equipment, or its cargo that is purposefully cast overboard or jettisoned to lighten the load in time of distress and that sinks or is washed ashore. Lagan (also called ligan[2]) is cargo that is lying on the bottom of the ocean, sometimes marked by a buoy, which can be reclaimed. Derelict is cargo that is also on the bottom of the ocean, but which no one has any hope of reclaiming.
Flotsam and jetsam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I like the name FLOTSAM for the brand but I think the word LAGAN is more suitable as it applies more to the core values of what the brand is about.
Assesment hand in reflection
As a conclusion to my Honours year study I would like to firstly explain why I chose to submit a blog and no on paper work. The reasons for doing so are that my project was about sustainability and a paper free environment is more ecologically sound thus adding something relevant and unique to my project. Having a blog makes it very simple for clients to see your progress with projects and it shows a degree of transparency through my work where people can see how much effort I have given and time I have spent. It allowed clients to PR themselves through the work I was doing and it gave me more exposure. Another reason I chose to blog my progress with my Honours year is that I have done a lot of video projects and you would have to be an actual insane person to look at a printed screenshot from a video you have never seen with an annotation such as “I like the tempo change at 02.23s” and feel like it had been in any way informative. I am very happy with myself this year both with my exploration in process and practise. I have taken on some projects that I thought might have been too challenging and I feel I have succeeded and learned new processes through it including welding, sandblasting, woodworking, using the kiln, laser cutting, vinyl cutting and a whole new range of photography skills. I feel my professional practise has come a long way too and I think this is evident in that the majority of my work this year has been client based. The projects that have been live briefs and clients were Hush Chandelier, Waste Aware Christmas tree, Pearl Lounge photography, Video work for Boardeline (ROME UK video), Video work for Snowsport Scotland (LASS, Scottish Champs), Video work for Aberdeen Snowpsort Centre (SSBX) and the logo for Fersands and Fountain. When thinking about my main project I feel it got a bit blurred as to where my main project starts and ends. I consider anything that is related to sustainability that I have completed for honours year to be my ‘Main project’ and the things not directly related to sustainability are my side projects. The individual projects all have their own page which you can find on the left hand side of my web page and all the my final outcomes can be found on the page ‘Finished Outcomes’ All of the pages are in chronological order so the oldest tagged post will appear first. Which is interesting as the brief for the project may not be at the start. Overall I’m happy with my performance this year and I really hope I get my honours degree. www.grantanderson.me www.wooleh.tumblr.com
