“Goddamn,” Maddox shouted over the waves at the stunning specimen down the beach from him, shamelessly giving them once over and delighting in every second of it. He himself was lying back on the sand, propped up on his elbows looking over the beach; comfortably crossed, he’d been letting the sounds of the waves wash over him, world spinning soundly around him as he nearly dozed off. But now he was propped up and peering out into the world, and what a gorgeous world it was. He sat up further, shooting them a smile and a little wink before nodding in a universal sign beckoning them over. “If you got a minute.”

The beach wasn’t somewhere Tiberius frequented. He would go if other people were involved and he had definitely followed a few people there before. But running into people he knew there was simply coincidence. Not with Maddox though. Tiberius had promised to meet him there. There would be plenty of booze so why not? He was already a few drinks in when he finally met up with his friend. “You finally made it,” he said as a greeting, a wide grin on his face. He couldn’t deny that Maddox looked good in those shorts. “Want to get a drink or hit the water first?”

Maddox was already firmly in the pocket by the time he stepped onto the sand, but he kind of had to be if this was going to be any kind of fun. There were a lot of people and the sun was already beating down hard, nobody wanted a cranky asshole harshing their bash vibe. Even though he and Tiberius had agreed to meet, even though this whole thing was a beach deal, he hadn’t been quite ready to see him, or to have his eyes on him. He couldn’t complain. “I mean, did a little bit of pregame,” he admitted, face flushed from the drinks or the heat or the death of his barely-there inhibitions. “But another won’t hurt. My turn to treat you, yeah? Then water.”

Tiberius downed his drink in four large gulps. Drinking was easy for him since he did it so often. “Good. There’s more to come.” He beckoned the bartender and ordered a few more. He didn’t mind paying for a few drinks for his friend. “Fuck yeah it’s good,” he said with a grin. “You really shouldn’t. You know I only order the best.”

Maddox wasn’t trying to turn this into anything. At first, at least. He wasn’t trying not to by any means, no, but Tiberius, weird, wild dude that he was, was someone he was genuinely interested in talking to, if only to figure him out. And now he was buying a few rounds of drinks for the two of them, downing his own nice and fast, and that was hot, and Maddox was only a man. “Not pulling any punches, okay,” he smirked, biting the inside of his lip as he watched his eyes, his mouth, his hands. “Uber home’s on me, it’s only fair and I’m not letting you drive home on a few rounds of boozy caffeine.”

Marie scoffed. “I’m so not scared of dancing. I just don’t want to break my ankles trying to do it in these platforms.” She could probably handle it fine but she was too stubborn to now. “As for my drink…I dunno yet. Something fun that’s for sure. Maybe a whiskey sour. Is that alright with you? Because I can keep brainstorming if you’re gonna be picky.”

“So now you’re a clumsy drunk?” Maddox challenged, lips stretched in a wide smile that the drunken flush of his cheeks only illuminated. “How long has it been since we’ve been out, do I even know you anymore?” He got the bartender’s attention with a wave the second the word sour passed her lips, and he laughed with a little scoff. “That’s good, all good. I’m here to make sure you have a good time, kiddo, whiskey sour’s a good time.”

“Awesome.” Tiberius flagged down the bartender and ordered two vodka Re”d Bulls. The can of Red Bull said not to mix with alcohol but that didn’t stop him. When the two glasses were set in front of them Tiberius picked up his and took a long sip. “You said to surprise you,” he said in defense in case Maddox said something about his choice. He was already pretty drunk. Too drunk to drive but drunk to wanna fuck.

Maddox sniffed at the drink the second he got his hands on it, smiling and scrunching up his nose at the familiar scent. “Dude, I could fuck a few of these up,” he grinned, tipping it back and downing half just for the hell of it. “Good surprise, best surprise.” That was going to hit, and not too kindly, but Zero didn’t have it in him to care how drunk he was going to get by the night’s end. He was ready to take the mess however it came. “Good taste, I shouldn’t be shocked coming from you.”

Arista’s life pretty much revolved around playing the drums. Even when she wasn’t playing on her full set she often found herself, like she did now, outside banging her sticks on an old, empty painter’s bucket. She was just riffing an improvised upbeat tune when she noticed someone nearby and stopped. She looked up with a smile, asking, “Got any requests?” 

Maddox was into it, wasn’t sure what or who it was that he was getting into but he wasn’t gonna chase away the feeling. By the time the blonde looked up at him, he was nodding his head in time, got a silly little half dance in before she stopped and smiled, and Zero gladly answered with his own. “I dunno, how heavy are you tryin’ ta take things?”

Tiberius didn’t have many friends. Maybe it was because he was strange. He had a hard time making friends though. Maddox was different though. He didn’t mind Tiberius’ company and he didn’t mind fucking him on occasion either. It was a good balance. He was also Jack’s cousin so that made Tiberius feel closer to him. “Need another drink?” he asked. “I’m going to have another. I’ll buy your next one.”

Zero licked his lip, looked back at his last drink, the glass that remained at least, and tried to see where he was. Maybe drunk enough, but... maybe not. He was never one to rail against pushing his limits a bit. “Yeah, sure,” he grinned with a bite of his lip. “I won’t say no. Surprise me or somethin’.” He didn’t always know what was going through Tiberius’s head, and sometimes he wasn’t sure he wanted to, but where would the fun be in that? They were out to have a good time, and the more booze the better.

Interactions with Maddox were normally done at a bar. Marie didn’t like to admit that she didn’t mind his company, especially after a cocktail or two, but she did. He teased her a lot, but he wasn’t malicious. And she honestly ended up teasing him back most of the time, so it was fine. She didn’t really feel like she had to act a certain way around him, so she didn’t. If he wanted to be around her, he did. If he didn’t, he didn’t. Right now she wasn’t sure yet. She was sure she was annoying him because every time he mentioned getting up to dance she had refused, but he was still there so it was hard to say. She was only a little tipsy, but that went a long way with her. “Listen,” she said, her words hardly slurring. “I could out dance you all. But…these shoes are not made for it. So I’m still gonna pass. Super sorry. You can buy me another drink though.”

Maddox was firmly in the pocket, warmly buzzed without the room spinning around him, and he was content to stay there for a little while longer, sipping pure diet coke through a paper straw. “I still say you’re scared,” he teased, looking down and leaning back off of his stool to eye her shoes. Cute, probably not too effective so she might not have been lying, but that wasn’t half as fun. “What’re you drinking next? Gotta spice it up a little, I won’t order you a vodka cranberry. Absolutely bonkers, my card will decline if it detects me being a bland ass, even for you.”

Biting at her bottom lip, the brunette took a step away from the easel to take a further look at the painting. Something was missing from it… but she couldn’t quite tell what. It was a landscape of a few shops in the downtown area, and as she looked across the street at the real life version of the painting Rapunzel couldn’t help but let out a small huff of frustration. A shadow caught her attention before she could get too upset though as someone walked by. The girl quickly turned to stop them, a bright smile on her face as she realized an outsider’s opinion could be exactly what she needed right now. “Excuse me! Do you have a moment?”

Maddox wasn’t sure what a moment was just here and just now - he’d felt like he’d been racing to this point, city blurring past the sides of his vision until the girl stopped him and everything fell back into focus with what felt like a shockwave. He took a breath before he answered, catching his balance now that the momentum was done, and nodded, blinking rapidly for a second or four. “Yeah, sure,” he tried, glancing around them again, eyes catching the painting itself and squinting when it looked too much like their surroundings. “Wait, how’d you--” he started, eyes darting back and forth. “Why’m I stopping?”

001. Maddox is rarely sober when he finds a moment for himself, but that doesn’t mean he’s missing any of his life. His memory is stellar - it takes a lot of effort for him to get smashed enough to forget a night, and he likes it that way. He might fudge it sometimes, pretend he’s forgotten a face that he’d rather not remember, but he doesn’t see the trouble in it.

002. That memory has gotten him into trouble before, or it nearly did. He remembers too much, remembers the Ascension all too well. Maddox is fairly certain that that’s his first memory, being roused awake by people in uniforms, looking around to his parents and wondering why they weren’t listening. He remembers the uniforms asking questions, remembers the impulse to play dumb, and it seemed to have worked out. It’s not something he talks about much - he doesn’t even know how many people know where he came from since they don’t seem to bring it up even when they do - but it works. It drives him, sometimes drives him mad, sometimes drives him forward. He’s always been a wild card.

003. Sometimes he wonders if he’s about to snap; after all, his hobbies don’t exactly bode well. The last time he saw anything about people keeping animal bones it was on a fact sheet about Jeffrey Dahmer. But he isn’t especially violent, he doesn’t think, doesn’t harbor any fantasies darker than the average Joe. He has a handle on how to keep himself busy if nothing else.

004. He’s made some decent money keeping busy, for what it’s worth. The OnlyFans was a joke for a short while. And more of a joke once he made one. And then he’s not sure what happened. He certainly found his audience, though, and the life of a gravedigger isn’t wildly stable. It’s a decent complementary income at the very least. And a shit ton of fun as far as Maddox is concerned.

Maddox Zero || Twenty-Four || Grave Digger || Non-Magical

🌹Biography:

Maddox did not have a good childhood. His parents were estranged from the rest of their family and when they had Maddox, they kept him further way from family as possible. Every once in a while he was able to see his cousin Jack, but other than that they kept to their community. He grew up where everyone dressed the same, believed in the same end goal, and well…had a few weird practices. It could get a little violent, and a magical rose was constantly mentioned. But Maddox had no idea what any of that meant. All he knew was that his parents were working towards ascending and gaining the magic they knew they were promised from birth but never were able to awaken. The ascension was the last time he saw his parents. It was a group suicide and he almost died as well, but he ultimately survived the ascension., but he was young enough to where the cops prayed he didn’t remember any of it. He was sent to his cousin’s family the moment he exhibited normal behavior and couldn’t answer their questions about the cult his parents were in. And for a while he seemed okay. But he really wasn’t.

He started going by Zero because he liked the sound of it more than the name his parents gave him and as he grew older, his behavior started to shift a little bit. He was only eleven when he found his first dead animal skeleton along the sidewalk. He was fascinated by the structure and decided to take it home with him. From then on he had an obsession with death and all things similar to it. He wasn’t questioned about it much because Jack had similar interest. The only difference was Zero was a little more….intense about it at times. But it was something he tried to be intense about privately. At school he was a charmer. He was pretty good-looking and knew it so he was the typical fuckboy until he was in his room, obsessing over bones and trying to figure out what the fuck was wrong with him. He had Jack by his side and Jack’s best friend Sally, who very quickly became one of his closest friends and first major crushes. But when he wasn’t with them, he was flying off the deep end. He took drugs to make himself feel normal, feel human. He drank to not have dreams because when he did things got confusing again. His dreams were like flashbacks and he wondered if they were. He couldn’t piece together his past but his past didn’t even feel like his past. To Zero, he died the day his parents did. He just wanted to know what for. A rose circled his head but he couldn’t figure out why.

And then one day a single memory came together. A book on a magical rose and Zero flipping through the pages because of the pictures. Magic. Maybe that was why he was so messed up. And then he got his job as a grave digger. He sought it out because he thought being closer to death would calm the obsession with it, but it only brought him closer to his past. His boss, who went by Hades had magic in his blood and Zero had seen it with his own two eyes. Ever since that night his drug usage has increased. He wants to know more about magic but he wants to stay away from it too. Magic killed him and his parents, but maybe it made him more alive? He wasn’t sure he wanted the answer to that. So he does as much as he can to stay away from it all. To be normal. Even if his version of normal is pretty fucked.

🌹Opinions on Magic:

He believes in it, but he is growing impatient. He felt like a good part of him died for magic and he never got what was owed to him. So what the heck?

🌹Connections:

Marie Bonfamille: She’s a cute little thing that Zero loves to openly flirt with. He would dismiss her as a priss but there is something in her eyes that shows she been through some shit as well and he wants to know more about that.

Lennon Hopper: The supplier to his darkest habits. He knows its better to not make conversation with him, but Zero can’t help but flirt his way to better deals with the guy. It was just in his nature.

Jered Lumiere: An old fling. Zero has a thing for older guys and they flirted so hard with each other that it only made sense for them to hook up a few times before going their separate ways. Every once in a while Zero will find his way back to him when he needs a distraction.
